It would be Petersen/Gruden, then Patterson, Frost. Else I would be disappointed.Peterson is one of a group of coaches that would be great but will probably say no. Gruden is the top of that list. Peterson is next on that list along with Kelly, and I don't think either are that much behind Gruden. Patterson, Fisher, Gundy, Leach I think are all on that list as well. All are a high ceiling guys, with individually low chance of moving.
However, if you have the money that's being talked about this go around, and just keep rolling it out, you take your odds from 5% or less individually to 35% or greater collectively. Make them say no to Knoxville and Gruden money even if its not Gruden. Great coaches are a finite resource. Go poach a known one. I suspect this is what Currie has lined up based on the 1a and 1b talk some of the posters in the Gruden thread are referring to.
peterson is on my list of "not realistic", so if you have a legit shot at him....View attachment 146867
Jake, you have some serious battered Vol syndrome going on.
"She's too good for me..."
He's far more realistic than you think. No coach named Saban, Meyer or Jim Harbaugh is off limits.

ETA: Forgot Dabo
oh yeah, never been shy about admitting it either...and it's not that 'she's too good for me', as much as it is 'i've been down this road before, and it's a dead end'.
but i would be ecstatic with a hire like this....
in fact, there's several names that i've called unrealistic, that'd i'd love to be wrong about.
Yep, I think Tennessee talks to Mullen on Friday. But I would hope they dont sign him that day. I hope they talk to Petersen face to face and see where things go from there.I honestly think Petersen would be a home run hire and I've said so for a long time. And I honestly don't think he would turn us down without hearing what we have to offer.
However...
I think the fans that clamor for Mullen have serious BVS going on. He's not elite at all. His record cannot ever be twisted and construed into anything other than "average" when it comes down to the brass tacks.
Tennessee deserves better than a coach that, frankly, nobody else wants. Because if he was in that high of a demand, someone else would have snatched him up by now. But, we ARE a blue blood college program. We aren't a Colorado that had a few good years and declined back to irrelevancy. We've had great decades and will get back eventually with the right hire.
In my opinion he's the closest thing to a sure bet that is even remotely possible. For me personally it would be a triple win. Vols would get a great coach, Peterson would stop beating up on WSU Cougs (wife's Alma Mater) , and the Washington Huskies would get a kick in the rear. (I really, really don't like the Huskies).
If he was interested the money would be at the bottom of the worry list. His buyout is not that large and his salary would definitely get a bump.
Petersen currently makes just north of $4 million a year. Tennessee could easily pay him $7-$8 million to come to Knoxville (hed be more than worth it).
Multiple reports have surfaced in the last few days that suggests theres been contact between Petersens reps and Tennessee. Though its unclear, one report says Petersens reps could have initiated the contact.

well, i've been a Mullen defender for a few days now, but even i've said multiple times he is not my #1, and nor should he be.
just as we approach that dead end i've been conditioned to expect, is there a path for a guy like mullen to be successful here? and i'm operating from that mindset when i defend Mullen, not so much as i'm trying to be a proponent for him.
hell, i'd want Frost before Mullen, said it many times. much higher ceiling imo. and it goes without saying i'd love to have peterson, fuente, franklin, patterson or gruden 1st.
