I hadn't read this anywhere and really didn't know Kiffin thought this Highly (lack of a better word) of Crompton.

From ESPN:

It might be just recruiting talk, but new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin and his staff were telling receiver prospects over the last few months that Crompton was plenty capable as a quarterback and that it was the system that held him back last season. We're going to find out.

What to watch in the SEC this spring - SEC - ESPN

Maybe it was the system.

No doubt the system was a big part of Cromptons poor play. My money is still on Coleman as the starter

CLK is having the crown lowered on the field so that JC does not throw it in the turf so often

I think to pick out a QB that's going to get the first shot is like basically putting all 3 of them in the NFL Combine. Who checks out as the physically more capable player? That's easily Jonathan Crompton. Neither of the other two guys stack up to the eye ball test and Crompton isn't all together stupid so despite what BJ has an advantage in, Crompton is still reasonable.

I wouldn't mind seeing Crompton get the first shot because the potential is obviously there as far as his physical tools are concerned. Now let's just see if Kiffin and Chaney can do what Cut did for Erik Ainge.

I don't know. Maybe tell them something else? Why the heck do you think they told them that? They could have just as easily told them that BJ Coleman was the man. Right?

Or maybe Kiffin actually thinks Crompton is capable.

I really don't know. I'm just posting what I read on ESPN.

So it was the system that was to blame for crompton's craptastic performance last year? Thats funny i thought it was his phobia of earthworms. I could have swore thats why he kept throwing the ball into the dirt. Glad they cleared that up for me.

Citing "the system" as the reason for Crompton's struggles is like citing "poor road conditions" for why Stevie Wonder isn't a good driver.

Well done. Welcome to the board.

Well he couldn't tell WR recruits that our QB's suck. Crompton has not impressed me in least. I think it goes beyond the "system".

Crompton may or may not be able to play... Last year doesn't tell us and it wasn't the system altogether. You can start with horrible OL play and go on to WR's that couldn't get off press coverage or run the right routes correctly. Crompton was part of the problem... not the problem itself.

If he was the problem then things would have gotten better with Stephens or Coleman... but they didn't.

IMHO, there's a couple of ways CLK could approach the QB situation. He could start Coleman if the competition is close. That would be a statement that he's the QB of the near term future. He could go with Crompton sending the message to top QB's that they would have a great chance of starting in '10. He could go with Stephens sending the message that a recruit could start in '10 but definitely in '11.

I think that unless Coleman really separates himself Crompton will warm the seat for a top '10 recruit. I think Stephen's chances are slim to none.

Let me get this straight. Kiffin knows talent so well that he can dissuade kids from coming to UT because he knows they won't fit in his system, but isn't capable of judging whether Crompton's poor performance was a by-product of Clawson's system?

He can judge a kids talent from film sent in from a high school, but can't judge Cromptons talent from game film at UT.

I mean something obviously gave Kiffin that impression. Or no, no one is suggesting that he lied or mislead recruits are ya?

OK, well, which is it fellas?

I'm just sayin.

I think I'm gonna defer to the Coach's opinion on this one and just wait to see how it shakes out after spring ball.

nice blurb, nothing really new. still thin on the D line, the O line should struggle on the edges.....and we still need a qb.

back 7 on d should be pretty good. should have pretty good skill at the RB, wide out and TE positions.

a year of growing pains up front.....can't wait to see how it all shakes out.

I think this quote from stj above sums it up pretty well...

get some good WR and some help up front, by way of any kind of running game, and it will be amazing what kind of progress a qb can make in a single year.

that said, no more freakin' fumbles in the endzone and bone headed int's....that'd be a good place to start as well.

if i were a bettin' man, i wouldn't be surprised to see an offense, for this year anyway, that just tried to manage the game a little better than it did last year. I don't think i'll go in to '09 expecting 30+ points a game or anything....

i think only those that buy in are hte ones you'll see in the huddle. either way, i would expect to see a different kind of effort put forth this year.

the "competition factor" that kififn has been talking about in spring, summer and fall camp will pay dividends going forward.

you hear pete carroll say it all the time.....what his kids see in practice each week, they try to make that tougher than anything they can see on Saturdays. I think that will carry over at TN under Kiffin.
