at hiring Gruden if Dooley doesn't finish the season strong.

Mike (Scottsdale, AZ)

At the start of the season many Vols fan were predicting 8-9 wins. Well with the way this season has gone 6-6 is more likely. Best case scenario my beloved Vols go 7-5 worst case they finish 5-7, remember last season Vandy took us to OT and UK beat us with a receiver at the QB position. Any chance UT's AD will go after a big name coach like Bama, USCe, and Florida did? I don't think the fan base would rally behind another small name hire like Charlie Strong, Gus Malzahn, Willie Taggart, Kyle Whittingham, etc. Those coaches may be able to get it done but after Dooley Vol fans want a big name. There is a lot of talk on Vols forums about going after Jon Gruden. Any chance Dave Hart offers him $4-5 million if Dooley doesn't finish the season strong? After all Gruden does have some ties to UT.

At the sake of starting a sandstorm of rumors, I do believe there's more of a chance that Gruden would listen than I did a year or so ago. He's even told some people that Tennessee would be a place he would consider if he took a college job. I think it's much more likely he get back into coaching in the NFL, because that's what he knows and loves. As for Dave Hart, I'm sure he's already looking and working the back channel to see who's out there. I agree with you. If he does send Dooley packing, he has to bring in a proven winner and somebody who's going to make a splash. It can't be somebody's who's going to learn on the job.

I still don't believe Gruden will ever coach at Tennessee.

The only thing this proves is that VN is read by many people including talking heads, recruits and their parents as well as our current players.

That's why some people should be more careful about what's posted here because VN simply DOES make a impact on some peoples thinking.

Yeah. He didn't say anything about there being a chance we hire Gruden.

I don't understand you guys' fascination with Gruden. Very rarely does a good NFL coach translate into a good college coach. And vice-versa. I do understand your frustration with what you have though. As much as I dislike UT, I respect Dooley and really wanted him to do well (just not against Alabama). I have even caught myself pulling for guys to win some. If ya'll really want success, go for a big name proven college coach not an NFL guy that has basically been unemployeed for a few years. If Chucky was all that, he would be coaching somewhere.

We've been over this stupid side of the argument ad naseum

There are as many examples of successful coaches at both levels, as those that go from college to NFL and bomb.

It seems to be a rarity that a successful NFL coach comes to college, so there's not a great sample size for your argument to be made.

The difference is, mediocre coaches can mask their mediocrity in college if they are excellent recruiters. So I would think a great NFL coach would be good in college if they can recruit and command respect from kids. I think Gruden would do well at those two things.

Muschamp is a big name? He turned us down like the rest did though.

He was head coach in waiting at Texas.

I just asked Chris Low because there has been a lot of talk on the forum here. As much as I would love to see a big name like Gruden come here. I think it is far more likely Dave Hart goes after Charlie Strong, if the need should arise to hire a new head coach.

I try to avoid the coaching threads but I got suckered into this one. Am I the only one that thinks Gruden would be horrible hire?

Wait till after the SC game and we will know exactly what is going in imo.

Timeframe:
firing the Monday after SC
New coach hired or announced Thanksgiving week

Does that sound correct iyo?

I am basing this on what maybe 5 credible posters are saying.

I think IF Gruden did come in he would be a great hire. He would bring instant credability to the program. With his NFL experience he should be able to lure in top recruits. And I think he can bring in good coordinators. But again I also think he is a long shot.

I think there are way too may variables for anyone including the principles to lay out such an exact timeframe.

IN MY OPINION before someone wants to call me out, assuming the next two games go as they should go on paper, Dooley will most likely be let go mid season after the SC game. I would think at that point, if that happens, it wouldn't be a month before an announcement is made. I would think the two announcements would be days apart as opposed to weeks or months. We can salvage and even build up recruiting with a home run hire like Gruden, but not if it comes at the end of an exhausting arduous process of search firms and interviews everywhere. For an optimal "changing of the guard" so to speak, timing is essential and every bit as important as any other aspect including money.
