Why don’t they honor the jersey with the name on the back instead of retiring numbers.

King deserved it with his play (but he was kind of a **** up off the court). Then Ernie had to get his... they're inseparable and Ernie G arrived at UT first. Then Allan broke Ernie's career scoring record and it was PC to include him. Then Dale Ellis was the best in his era and broke records in the NBA. But is Dale that much more deserving than Reggie Johnson? As usually, those running the UT AD screw things up. How many women athletes were in the UT Hall of Fame before General Neyland? There are some absolute idiots running things over there.

CL is my favorite all-time TN basketball player. His timely threes are legendary. Just ask Kevin Durant.

Yeah, Ellis is more deserving than Reggie Johnson. Ellis is UT's second best player ever. Reggie Johnson though, is one of UT's top 5.

Reggie Johnson had better numbers at UT. Ellis was more productive in the NBA, which is silly to even be part of the criteria.

I know Johnson had better numbers. I am thinking you know that doesn't make him a better player. Johnson did play in the NBA for several years. Probably most versatile big man UT has ever had as he could nail it from 17-18 ft and was a great on the boards. From about the middle of his sophomore season until he graduated, Ellis constantly faced double and triple teams, especially in the post. Of course, Reggie was on the best team ever

I don't believe that Dale Ellis is more deserving than Reggie Johnson of having his UT number retired.

He is. Maybe the best all around skill set to play here. Though King is my favorite, Ellis could do it all. And a shut down defender. He held Ralph Sampson to ZERO points for the first 39 minutes of a NCAA tourney game we had won until the pressure overcame us trying to lock it up at the free throw line at the end.

You mean that it's your opinion that he is. In my opinion he is not.

I thought they completely suspended retiring jerseys a few years back. When was the last jersey retirement in any sport?

They must have or Eric Berrys would be retired - same grounds as Majors

Correct. But everything on a message board pretty much starts with "my opinion is". We just all leave that out and go right to the meat because typing all that with just a thumb on tiny fake keyboards is a royal pain.

His Frosh yr. as he was reeally blooming I went to a car dealership in Barbourville Ky the day after Lofton had really showed out with huge baskets in a win against the Cats in Lexington. The salesmen there were in a huddle and I could overhear them very bitterly cussing him out. Very gratifying. I think I lol'ed right at them when I heard it.

Not exactly true. Sampson had a bad game, but not quite scoreless for 39 minutes.
Per the UT site:
Lamp scored a game-high 18 points. Jeff Jones and Lee Raker added 10 apiece for Virginia. Tennessee did slow down the All-America Sampson by holding him to a season-low nine points and five rebounds. He had only one point and one rebound in the second half.

You're confusing choking it away with the next year(1982) when we had the #1 Cavs on the ropes but missed 4 of 5 FTs in the final 3:12. UT had a 51-47 lead, but lost 54-51.

The prior year (1981), was the year youreferenced, and we got beaten by 14 points, although we shut down Sampson.

I could have sworn there was some kind of requirement tied to the NBA which is the only thing lacking on his resume.....
