There are only two ways to make the "homerun" hire we all want. The first is to hire an elite coach. Saban, Meyer and Swinney were not options. Fisher chose aTm. Patterson and Petersen chose to stay put. Kelly chose UCLA and if you choose to consider Gruden an elite option, he apparently has chosen to stay in the NFL. Beyond the elite coaches, there is no doubt there are other good options like Gundy who chose to stay put, Mullen who chose to return to Florida or a dozen other current coaches that many think would win here. But if you truly mean it when you say you want a homerun, the only way to get one without getting one of the elite coaches is to hire a guy that has not been a head coach that may prove to be a homerun in hindsight. Hiring an elite SEC coordinator is not the same path as hiring a coach from a Non-Power 5 conference as we've tried with our last 2 hires. If you can just accept that we could not hire one of the elite coaches, why not be optimistic about a great coordinator becoming our homerun hire in retrospect?

Might as well be positive. I’ve been a Vols fan through the thick and thin, no point or desire to turn around now. Honestly nowhere to go but up after the way this season played out. I’ll support whoever we hire, the university better be willing to shell out money for assistants though or we’ll be in the same spot 4 years down the road.

I am just stunned at this whole search. They are literally interviewing guys that no one else in the country is looking at. I understand that they couldn't get a top tier coach but my goodness they are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Well at least the two guys in question have SEC experience and know what this league is all about. Worked out well for Georgia so guess were going to give it a try. It will still come down to recruiting and Coordinators that know how to get the most out of the players on their roster. The SEC is tough every game is going to be a battle you must have the depth and talent to be successful.

Being positive and not realistic is just fooling yourself and has been a major contributer to our current woes.

If folks had demanded excellence and not given blind alligence, then we would be in a better place.

This could be the final nail in the coffin.

sooo.. if we do hire Pruitt, and it works out and he's a home-run hire, what happens then? Y'all just eat crow? or do you guys pretend you were on board from day 1? :good!:

I’ll eat crow. But it won’t happen. Eventually we will just get a coach who can qualify for a bowl consistently and people will forget we were supposed to do anything more.

I'll eat crow all day long, you can save this post and I'll happily come back and tell you that you were right and I was wrong.

We have fans that think that we have some magical wand (UT's checkbook) and that we can just wave it and get whoever we want.

And, as usual, our fans have proven they do not know anything about hiring coaches. They have made hiring an established coach almost impossible. Time for them to crawl back into their holes and give our new coach a chance before they rise in rebellion. Give him at least 4 years before calling for his head.
