There are only two ways to make the "homerun" hire we all want. The first is to hire an elite coach. Saban, Meyer and Swinney were not options. Fisher chose aTm. Patterson and Petersen chose to stay put. Kelly chose UCLA and if you choose to consider Gruden an elite option, he apparently has chosen to stay in the NFL. Beyond the elite coaches, there is no doubt there are other good options like Gundy who chose to stay put, Mullen who chose to return to Florida or a dozen other current coaches that many think would win here. But if you truly mean it when you say you want a homerun, the only way to get one without getting one of the elite coaches is to hire a guy that has not been a head coach that may prove to be a homerun in hindsight. Hiring an elite SEC coordinator is not the same path as hiring a coach from a Non-Power 5 conference as we've tried with our last 2 hires. If you can just accept that we could not hire one of the elite coaches, why not be optimistic about a great coordinator becoming our homerun hire in retrospect?
