Chaz Coleman status?

He isn’t making the fabricated up 3.5 million dollars. Folks throwing out insane numbers that don’t have a clue. I just hope he gets his issues straightened out. Swain addressed this very well in my opinion. Folks throw out numbers without knowing the facts then the internet takes it and runs wild. Just enjoy the guys in Orange, pull for them and enjoy the games. GBO!
I will! And I’ll also hate Chaz Colman for being an untrustworthy back-stabbing self-absorbed 🐈

That's called a "professional sports contract" so sure, if we're willing to tear the band-aid of "student athlete" off and start a pro league, no problem. It can all be field performance based.

Other than that, NIL is a performance based agreement. That performance is card signing, swag wearing, appearances, etc. There's no indication one way or the other if Coleman is meeting his NIL obligations.

If it is in his contract to sit in his dorm room eating bon bons, than he is meeting his performance based contract.

Sorry but, "Student athlete" is long gone!

I went from SoCal to Florida for college. My parents told me you're not coming home until Christmas, so don't call crying about being homesick.

After about a month at Tech, I was feelings bit homesick and went home for the weekend.

My parents said maybe 10 words to me all weekend lol.

After that, never made that mistake again ha ha.

Onward and upward and all that.

Hey Chaz- sometimes you gotta act like a man!!! I grew up in northern Jersey and drove 750 miles south to attend UT in September of 1975 and didn't know a soul there. Also, I didn't have football coaches coddling to me or amazing training facilities at my fingertips or sumptuous meals prepared for me (Sophies??) or a dorm as nice as The Ritz Carlton to live in (Hess sucked). You have landed in paradise young man so wake up and smell the roses cuz all you'd be smelling back in Ohio or PA right now is snow.

For real. I drove 1100 miles from ATL to Abilene for ACU. Would sleep in emergency lane in MS at 3am for a quick nap cause exits could be 40-60 miles apart. Otherwise knocked out an 18 hour drive non-stop. Sleep all day, eat supper, say the byes and head out. Roll into West Texas for lunch and hit the sack till morning. Wouldn't see no one again till xmas.

Whatever the amount is, he is not gonna walk away from it for nothing until the next portal period opens up.

What’s most surprising to me is that Coach Knowles knew him and wanted him to come to Knoxville. I just can’t figure out how to make sense of that..
Coleman not only has his former DC here, but also former teammates from last year. He could lean on their familiarity if he wanted to badly enough.

Maybe he’s extremely introverted.. Maybe he’s extremely irresponsible with a little wealth..

Amazing the conclusions people will jump to without all the information.

“Our society is soft.”

It often is. But the bigger problem is that our society loves a black and white opinion more than information and nuanced analysis. The former takes far less effort than the latter.
Well, the fans didn’t do this. We didn’t get 1,2, or 3 million bucks to play (not play) football. We aren’t the ones who didn’t show up to practice. We’re the one who keep getting priced out and told to shut up if we don’t have a nuanced opinion on player psychology.

Maybe Coleman was happy/comfortable there? Maybe the culture and area in Knoxville doesn't sit well with him? Maybe he blindly chased his "bag" and now realizes that money can't fix everything? Maybe Knowles saw some of it there, but it wasn't a major issue, but being all the way down here in Knoxville magnifies things? Regardless, either the kid matures and acclimates or we wasted a valuable spot and a ton of money. Hope some of the other edge players step up and get the job done.

Evidently those “values” don’t go down. OSU is in his ear.
So how does that work? Coleman withdraws at UT and enrolls at OSU and is eligible at OSU next season? How do they handle the contract/deal with UT? Damages? I'd assume there would be since we lose an edge that can't be replaced for next season....or can we do the same? When does the madness end?

The softness of our society is trying to split hairs over the same issue. He’s not fulfilling his obligations. Why should anyone care if the hair is black, white, blonde, blue or any other color?

I understand he can not transfer & be eligible to play until the portal opens again after the ‘26 season.

He could just bypass the portal like Retzlaff and Lucas did. I am not sure the NCAA closed that loophole when the made the portal window changes? But the new roster cap of 105 could be an issue at OSU for him. OSU has 112 now and expect to get to 115 by summer. He could end being the odd man out

Defensive End (8)

Returners (4): Kenyatta Jackson Jr. (Starter in 2025), Zion Grady (Second-String in 2025), Beau Atkinson (Second-String in 2025), Epi Sitanilei (Redshirt in 2025)

Additions (4): Qua Russaw (Transfer), Khary Wilder (Freshman), Dre Quinn (Freshman), Darryus McKinley (Freshman)

Departures (5): Caden Curry (Senior), C.J. Hicks (Transfer), Dominic Kirks (Transfer), Logan George (Transfer), Joshua Mickens (Transfer)

Ohio State lost four reserve defensive ends to the transfer portal, but Hicks was the only one among them who was viewed as a candidate to play a significant role in 2026. While the Buckeyes missed out on their top transfer target in former Penn State defensive end Chaz Coleman, who went to Tennessee, they still added a talented transfer edge rusher in Russaw while retaining three of their top four defensive ends from last season in Jackson, Grady and Atkinson.

There’s some uncertainty as to who Ohio State can count on to play major roles in this group in 2026 outside of Jackson, but Grady looks like a star in the making while Atkinson and Russaw are veterans with plenty of experience from their previous schools (Atkinson transferred to Ohio State from North Carolina in 2024). A redshirt freshman in Sitanilei plus a trio of true freshmen led by Wilder, a top-50 overall prospect in the 2026 class, give Ohio State a promising group of young players to round out the defensive end depth chart.

These are the things that need fixed with the portal system.

A player can still leave a school at anytime and transfer to another school and traditional transfer rules still apply...I believe there are dates on that traditional rule as far sitting a season or not.
This needs to go away - if a transfer portal is going to exist, it needs to be the ONLY way a player can transfer.

"Tampering" - by multiple sources and accounts, tOSU has been actively having discussions with Coleman or an "agent" on his behalf while he is enrolled and on the roster at Tennessee.
This needs to stop and rules put in place similar to the NFL around this practice. Problem is how do you enforce those rules. in the NFL it's easy because everyone is drawing from the same bank and has the same caps, free agency windows, etc.

NIL Contracts need to be enforced and consequences written into the contract. Contracts may also be multi-year with incentives and such. Contracts should also be paid out in installments instead of a lump sum. If a player leaves say 3 months into signed deal, he forfeits the remainder of the deal and should have to pay some type compensation back to the originator of the contract.

All of that said, it is an even playing field in terms of us "doing the same". If Coleman is being lured by tOSU, we should be talking to an active player to replace him. It's not the best way to build a roster, or even right in my opinion, but if Jimmy and Joe are doing it, you better be doing it too.

The madness won't end until there are enforceable rules in place and a governing body that can enforce them.

It would be hard to do that and retain his NIL, imo. Teams have already budgeted their NIL for the coming season. TN surely would not let him leave without recouping NIL payments. So if he leaves, he would likely make a fraction of what he currently is, while having to repay what he's already earned.

This isn't like the Mensah situation. Mensah could do what he did because he had a team willing to match or exceed his NIL valuation, along with the money to cover for the settlement Mensah made with Duke. Chaz isn't likely to find that at this stage.

I doubt there hasn't been any NIL payments to him from the Vols but could be. Schools are budgeting revenue sharing now, NIL not so much. House settlement changed NIL quite a bit. Under the College Sports Commission rules, schools can’t guarantee third-party NIL money. They can only guarantee the revenue share money they pay you directly.

So the Vols use revenue sharing as an NIL royalty for the use of the SAs name, image and likeness. That image will appear on the UT website, posters, promotional videos, social media and other things.
