Fascinating. If he is willing to recruit, he could probably be a good one. All the best to him:

NASHVILLE -- John Chavis paused to wipe the tears running down his face, his bottom lip quivering as he realized the Tennessee football team's season finale Saturday against Kentucky could be his final trip to Neyland Stadium.

It will be the painful end of an era for UT's longtime defensive coordinator, but likely not the final chapter of his coaching career.

An emotional Chavis discussed his future plans Saturday in greater detail than at any point since the Nov. 3 announcement of coach Phillip Fulmer's impending departure, admitting he hopes to find his first head-coaching job and that he already has been contacted about several opportunities.

"There will be some opportunities out there. ... I hope that I'll have an opportunity to be a head coach. There may be some opportunities out there for that to happen, obviously on a different level. If that happens, then that's something that I would entertain," Chavis said.

"There's several schools in the country that I would consider going to and doing the same thing that I'm doing here, and certainly I would consider this school. And there's opportunities in the NFL, and there's some of those that have already been expressed."

Chavis said there also is "a very strong possibility" he could spend next year away from coaching, at least on a full-time basis.

"I may take a year off -- not completely, but a year off in terms of being a coach -- and go somewhere and volunteer so I can stay current and get back into it," Chavis said.

"I may need a little time off. I've done this for 30 years. I haven't regretted a minute of it. It's fun. I love the association with the kids. But the last six weeks or so, it's been a trying time for us all. We've got to sort through all those and decide what's going to be best, and there's a lot of thoughtful prayer into this.

"I want to be where I can do the best for the young people that I'm going to be around, and that's what's important to me."

As for having an opportunity to stay at UT under Fulmer's successor, Chavis said he doesn't "see that happening" but is "not going to close any doors."

Chavis has served as defensive coordinator under Fulmer since 1995.

"I am just looking forward to the future and, to be honest with you, it is not getting here fast enough," Chavis said. "I don't mean that with any bitterness or mean that wrong. I just want to get this behind us and move on and do something."

Chavis sees head coaching job in his future

Good luck to him but I will not miss his inability to adjust at halftime and keep us from getting blown out, his prevent defense, and all the third and long plays that always seemed to go against us.

Not demeaning Chief. I'm from Chattanooga and UTC deserves to not suck for once.

It still amazes me how people down Coach Chavis and his defense. Hello he was 6th in the NATION in defense as bad as our offense was. What more does this man have to prove?

well the good news: if he does come to the SEC we will know how to get him.... let his team build a lead late, get into as many 3rd and 12's as we can, and recruit a QB with the last name of Wuerffel or Tebow and we will be assured certain victory.

I hope the guy lands a good gig. No amount of prevent defense can make me want a guy to not be able to find work. Just glad it is not here any longer.

Curious,

do you own a TV? Have you watched an Alabama, gator, or Bulldog game recently vs. UT? Please quit with the numbers. We feast on pitiful teams and get destroyed by any team with talent.

And for the past 5 or 6 years prior to this year our defenses were average to bad. Hell just last year people wanted Chavis gone.

The Chavis Prevent Defense will revolutionize the game! He'll be in big demand at coaching clinics with his latest defensive plan (which he plants to patent):

"How to convert a 17 point lead to 7 points, in one quarter"

Chavis led a D that was ranked 6th in the nation that was on the field for 50+ snaps almost every game because the O could not pick up hardly any first downs, He deserves more credit than you guys give him. Be realistic, his D has won alot more games than it has lost.

not really, 2005 was a good defense. If we'd had an offense that year...

Tenn D:
263 yds a game 4th in nation
776 total plays (64.5 a game)
35 red zone att. only 14 TDs
opponents converted only 37% of 3rd downs that everyone gripes about.
all of this while our Offense is ranked 116th in the nation in total offense
and 97th in time of possession

I'm not saying Chavis is the best D cord. in the world but he is definately on the upper end and deserves more credit than he gets.

Chavis's defenses were good when he had more talent that the offense he was playing....that propped his numbers up

I never wanted him gone, and have constantly argued that he is one of the best in the biz.

People bring up the FL game and what not, but we actually held Florida to less points than the rest of their opposition, except Ole Miss, if I'm not mistaken. And it was our turnovers and special teams that were more at fault than the defense.

So I don't understand how using FL for an example of how bad our defense was supposed to be as a reliable point.

Yeah, because stats don't tell anything. Like those stats that show how short the field constantly is for UF, Bama, and UGA because our offense couldn't move the ball. Chavis will land a nice gig if he wants one because he is a top notch DC. Although I still fully expect him to take a year off or follow Fulmer wherever he goes.

for the last 15 years for UT--they are good, quite good. With today's game and kids having to play as freshmen, before they are ready, you are going to give up points. The days of giving up 10 points a game are long gone. Geez, look at texas and oklahoma this year--they each given up a TON of points but they've got great offenses. Chavis is a damn good coach--much better than Fulmer or others if you ask me. He will get another job without too much difficulty. I'd like to see get a head job--but yea, he will have to recruit.

Why would Chavis take a year off if he "will land a nice gig if he wants one?"

because he's been coaching for a very long time in a pressure cooked atmosphere, and deserves a break.

Could not agree more. For the past 5 years, the defense has fell victim to an offense that couldn't stay on the field.

I remember during the latter part of the Sanders-era, when we had a great defense, in one part of a game I thought Chavis looked like he wanted to rip Sanders' head off after a third and out.
