In other threads it seems to be an almost unanimous consensus that Chavis is unimpressive to downright dead weight, so why is he still on staff? thoughts?

IMO his overall body of work is good... but lately it has slipped. Whether that is more a result of failure to stay on top of the evolution of the game or being saddled with subpar D-linemen and inexperienced secondaries... I don't know.

Seems like Chavis has mastered defending a traditional pro set offense, but struggles with less mainstream attacks (when combined with talent), such as the fun n' gun or urbie's spread, and teams with a mobile QB.

I think he will do well this year... If not, time for him to move on to greener pastures.

Phil and Chavis are boys till the end.

I don't think he's total dead weight but his inability to be adjustable and to play off the ball when we have the lead pisses me off to no end.

If your line can't get pressure, you're gonna look like a skunk of a coach.

No matter what offense you play against.

The most deserved knock on John is probably that he looks so bad at recruiting given the rest of the recruiting skill on that staff..

He is a great coach but an average at best recruiter. If he wasnt getting the job done, he would be gone. Last time I checked, you guys were pumped about our D this year.

I agree he does have some positives, but he seems so stubborn and inflexible to change and adjustment. In recent years offenses have changed to reflect talent faster than defenses I feel, Chavis seems to have been behind many D coaches in adjusting. Spurrier built a reputation off him with speed and hittin em where they ain't.

Good point. the speed at which todays game changes makes flexibility and changing to suit the attributes of your best players a must.

He definitely seems slow to adapt. I hope he's catching up with Urbie's spread. We are getting faster on D, and that definitely seems like part of the equation.

The secret, well not really a secret anymore, to beating spread is blowing up the middle of the O line. Do that, and all that timing material gets crushed.

If we really have improved with the starters on D-Line, then success against Urban and Auburn should follow..

I say you give him 1 more year and see what he can do!!! If he does not produce with the secondary that we have this year then we really need to bring in someone with some new ideas!

I used to think he was the strength of team, now I'm wavering. I think he has become more predictable, coupled with the fact he's facing some pretty potent offenses in the SEC. What is consistent about Chavis' defenses is the fact that they are so inconsistent. That drives me bonkers. But you see it on most other teams too, so maybe it's the nature of the beast now-a-days.

Chavis does very well when he has a great front four, but he's really one of those coordinators who can't make alot out of less....when he has all the pieces, his defenses are outstanding; when he doesn't though, they're okay at best

Also, why a basketball icon?

people keep saying "the last few years" but his D in 05 did everything it could to win games despite Sanders.

Give chavis some big nasty's on the d-line and you'd be singing his praises again. John knows how to coach except for third and long. His lack of recruiting has hurt us in recent years.

I've never really thought Chavis was that bad. He definitely has had trouble with Florida (nobody else was stopping them in the 90s either) and good option teams, overall I think he's been fine.

I would say that is the case with most DC's

agreed.
but, i'll say this much......give me john henderson and albert haynesworth et al........and i'd look like a good coach.........:)

biggest problem the past two years has been some lack luster talent up front, and we haven't had the depth we're used to having......more personnel than coaching i beleive.......

i've heard and read about too many former players on the D side of the ball have too much respect for him, for him to just be a lame duck.

Chavis was rated in a recent article as the 18th best DC in the nation. There were seasons the D carriedthe team. There were games last year where they looked clueless. (FL, Bama) But I for one am not ready to give up on John Chavis.

Chavis is decent. Phil is decent. Decent doesn't cut with no BCS appearances over the last 10 years.

He's Fulmer's buddy and Fulmer doesn't know when to say when.

w/ mahelone in 05 (an decent dt) they're defense was awesome, so i think this is the big year. Last two years have struggled. He better perform this year

I was really hoping he would have been offered and taken that position with the Falcons this past offseason. :cray:
