Chavis Fans

:hi:Yo there Vol Fans. I think it is time we put the past behind us....In case some of you haven't noticed, Coaches Fulmer and Chavis have moved on to other pursuits. They are not coaching the Vols any longer. They jointly and severally gave us their very best for many, many years. Granted, last year was a very unpleasant season for us but please remember it was as or more unpleasant for them. For us/you as Drugstore or Armchair Quarterbacks to come out continually thrashing them even after they are gone is wholely pointless. Spare us your pontifications.
Let it go. It is what it is and it is over. Bashing their names will not make any of you seem wiser. We have a new day dawning for our wonderful university and football team. Let's all devote ourselves to giving the school and the "new" team the best we have to offer as alumni and fans from this day forward. Stop the pitiable rantings about things we cannot change. Start the jubilation for the potential the future has to offer.
I thought the world of both Phillip Fulmer and John Chavis and will maintain my respect for both of them forever. However, since the clock stopped at the end of the Kentucky game, I turned my attention, loyalty, devotion and support to the "new era" of Tennessee Football. Coach Kiffin is my headcoach now and I am behind him 100%.
I will remember Coach Fulmer for the great coach and fine moral gentleman he always was and continues to be. Now get a life and look to the future not to the past.
Someone far wiser than I once said, "the evil a man does lives after him and the good is oft interred with his bones".

Look at UGA's stats and then try to brag about our Defense.

If we played UF now, they'd absolutely destroy us.

Florida's offensive stats against us were also artificially lowered by the fact that there defense and special teams gave them unbelievable field position, or just outright scored on us. Their offense didn't have to do much at all to pulverize us.

Really? Find me ONE example of another team that played 7 opponents who finished with total offenses ranked between 97 and 119.
TCU's opponents couldn't have been that much better.

After the way that Chavis has handled the whole termination...I refuse to pile on. He has handled himself the way he handled the defense for the majority of his tenure. Like a man.

Chavis had recruiting and scheme issues, but he deserves as much credit as Cut or Fulmer for the run that this team had.

I don't see how he didn't just take Phil's sack after that horrendous offensive showing in 05.

He wasn't perfect, but he was almost always good enough to win. In fact nearly every game plan UT had was predicated on his defense.

To the original poster... And? Who has Alabama played that had a high-powered offense? Answer, no one. Still ranked #1 and going to a BCS game... This years D WAS good... Any questions?

Not even close, but I will give you a gold star for managing to name a team that had almost half as many opponents that had total offenses ranked from 97 to 119.

TCU played three teams ranked from 97 to 119: SMU, San Diego State, and Wyoming. Of course, TCU won those games 48-7, 41-7 and 54-7, respectively, while UT managed to lose to UCLA (#110), Auburn (#102), South Carolina (#97), and Wyoming (#109).

And let's not forget that our offense did absolutely nothing to help the defense this year. A ton of 3 and outs and poor field position that would have buried lesser defenses.

I loved our defense.
Was disappointed alot on 3rd downs.
4th in total yards is good, no doubt. But we did lose the field position battle all year long. Most of the time offenses didn't have far to go to get a score. Can't help looking at it his way, although the D was the the lone bright spot...

But at the end of the day, it's all just stats, so what's really the point? Is it that big a deal if somebody overinflates an adjective when describing the defense for a team that went 5-7 in the first place? It's like you're afraid somebody might not kick enough dirt on the grave.

Chavis's D made UCLA's third string QB look like Joe Montana. I like Chavis, but when or DBs were playing 15 yards off the recivers in the fourth against UCLA you cant blame anyone but him for that.

Well guys my thinking is this.....Im glad Kiffin got rid of most of the staff all together because I do believe he said it best..."You got to change the culture whereever you go" I think he's 100% right about that...Don't get me wrong I know I've been on here defending Fulmer and I would still defend him today if we still had him but I will admit it was time for a change...As far as losing Chavis goes, personally he's a hell of a guy but as a Coach, why is there alot of people unhappy??? Not necessarily on here but you hear people on the radio on SportsTalk mad because he's gone but I mean if the reports that Monte Kiffin is going to be a Vol next year are true, why be mad? Sure we DID have one of the best DC's in the Nation when he had the talent on that side of the ball but if it's true we are going from having one of the best in college football to having THE BEST in the NFL....JMO....GO VOLS!!!!!!

Our defense kept us in games and gave us the opportunity to win. Our offense just wasn't pulling their weight.

This statement is not true of the UCLA game which got us off to an awful start and set the tone for the rest of the season IMO.

Yes they did, but only against teams where they should have. The big 3 FL, AL and GA all hung big numbers against the D.

UCLA..if the offense would have run the ball in the second half, instead of bounce pass, incomplete, 3 and out it would have helped the defense out.

Yes. Our offense sucked. Everyone knows that. Hell, they even sucked as bad as 7 out of 12 of our opponents' offenses this season. However, the reason that our defense spent the majority of the time on the field all season was because it was 100% incapable of stopping ANYBODY on third down. Let's at least get THAT part right.
