Charting every pass from South Carolina game

I will tell you that of the 3rd down passes that should have been completed, probably 4 out of 6 were clean pockets. He was not under duress on most throws.
Seeing ghosts and over correcting

I’m still trying to figure out why the SC player got up in JG’s grill after that QB sneak for a TD?

Was just curious. They were breaking them down on the radio. A couple got me curious.

Good post

and the other weird part of this was if JG had a strength last year it was 3rd down passing. Maybe he gets that back

True, but anecdotally, it felt like the majority of those were him just throwing the ball as hard as he could at Jennings or Calloway and having them bail him out of a high or slightly off target throw. They then usually got murdered by a DB immediately afterwards, but they were great at holding onto the ball.

Watching game right now. The issue I am having is that manly of these incomplete passes were to wide open receivers and/or on third down. Basically killing the drive. Primary reason we were 1/12 on third down was the way off-target passing

I dont know who he is or what number, but i did like how JG wasn't just going to let him punk him and started giving it back to him. I wonder what was said. Probably something like, "youre the sweetest person I have ever met".

The overthrows and behind the receiver throws are an issue. If it was an obvious fix, I would think that it would have been corrected by now.

On the completions I think JG looked very good with his throws and it gave me hope. He also didn't throw any dangerous throws into triple coverage with the danger of being intercepted. The exception being the rocket near the end zone. I don't think anyone was going to catch that missile.

Not accurate. I just went back and watched.

JG dropped back 9 times on 3rd down. Was sacked twice, hit Johnson with a clean pocket, missed throws with 2 clean pockets and was pressured 4 other times.

So in 6/9 plays he was pressured. In his 6 incompletions he was pressured 4/6 plays.

I don’t think you can discount 1st and 2nd down completions and say his incompletions on 3rd down were the big difference in the game. First downs are first downs

Just watching all the 3rd downs again I was floored at how many 3rd and 2-3 yard plays we had and only tried one dang run on those distances.

I will say this...Give JG credit because I didn't see his past mistakes of panicking and rushing around until he turns it over or gets sacked.

He had one sack where no one got open and he probably held on too long, and his usual excited overthrows a few times, but overall I thought he played decently.

I had more issues with the offensive playcalling this game

So maybe I think about things differently than most, but if you miss a wide open receiver on 3rd down that would have resulted in a 1st that is the same as a turnover, so I would argue he had at least 3 turnovers.
Yeah, wholeheartedly disagree. He’s got to do better, especially on third. but there’s a big difference in being able to use your punter to flip the field and an actual turnover. Had our final drive ended with an INT instead of a punt we probably lose. Instead, SC messes up and we recover to knee out the game.

Just thought it would be interesting to go back and watch the game and chart the throws to see how JG ended up with decent to good stats but we were only 1 of 12 on 3rd downs. (* = would have converted 3rd down)

1. completion
2. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
3. completion
4. completion
5. completion
6. completion
7. completion
8. incomplete (Keyton looks over wrong shoulder?)
9. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
10. complete
11. complete
12. incomplete (open, behind)*
13. completion
14. incomplete (coverage)
15. incomplete (open, behind)
16. complete
17. complete
18. complete
19. complete
20. complete
21. complete
22. incomplete (coverage)
23. incomplete (open, too hard)*
24. incomplete (coverage)
25. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
26. complete
27. complete (TD)
28 complete
29. incomplete (drop)
30. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
31. complete

So based on the bad throws and how open the WR was, JG missed six 3rd down conversions to open WRs so that 1 of 12 could have easily been 6/7 of 12. Almost all of his bad throws were on 3rd down and that was a huge difference in this game. The game is not close if hit those 3rd down passes.
Excellent research. How many of the completions were 3rd down which did not net enough yards to get a first down?
