Charting every pass from South Carolina game

Just thought it would be interesting to go back and watch the game and chart the throws to see how JG ended up with decent to good stats but we were only 1 of 12 on 3rd downs. (* = would have converted 3rd down)

So based on the bad throws and how open the WR was, JG missed six 3rd down conversions to open WRs so that 1 of 12 could have easily been 6/7 of 12. Almost all of his bad throws were on 3rd down and that was a huge difference in this game. The game is not close if hit those 3rd down passes.

This is good stuff.

Our guys are executing and getting open. That's a good thing. Scheme is working.

Not terrible, when you look at the stat sheet. But that's always been JG's problem hasn't it. Stats look good, but he just doesn't pass the eye test. And those incompletions because of throwing behind, or over, the receiver come at the absolute worst times. I do believe his decision making has improved. But his pass accuracy...I just don't see how you improve that with a 5th year senior.

That's a really good point, and I'm glad you charted it. So, I guess that is really why his poor throws stuck out to those who don't believe he played a great game. In addition to being just bad, errant throws, they killed drives and gave the ball back to South Carolina. Perhaps they are a little more forgettable if they happen on 1st or 2nd down.

I feel like he was decent, especially against a very good USC secondary that has two early round NFL corners (though both missed large portions of the 2nd half). He didn't commit any TOs, which was huge in a close game, and he made the big plays to Johnson and Palmer to score the go-ahead TD, which were his two best throws of the night.

Good post

and the other weird part of this was if JG had a strength last year it was 3rd down passing. Maybe he gets that back

We have to hope he does. This offense is going to see a lot of 3rd downs, I'm afraid. We aren't going to out-athlete many SEC teams with explosive offensive plays. This team will very much be a team that lives and does on 3rd down, offensively.

Funny thing is typically JG in past yrs has been good on 3rd down.

I like and appreciate what you did here. What I would like to see though is how many of those completions were on short throws (like ones to backs behind the line) or on those little passes (more like handoffs, but forward) to the WR that runs right in front of him. I think those passes increase his completion stats and are throws that grandma could have made.

Yes he must get better and we must get some conversions on the ground. The running game has to be a threat and wasn’t this first game on 3rd down

What if the offense threw in some 5 receiver sets to spread the field so the windows wonr be so tight, with some underneath crossing patterns so the wideout can catch and run up field... Any thoughts

I’d argue there is no such thing as “too hard” when fitting the ball into a tight window like that throw was. The WR just had to catch it. If the throw is softer it brings a pick into play.

Yes...there are times to use a little heat in tight spaces...but A LOT of times they go incomplete or bounce up for easy interceptions. JG has always struggled with touch throws inside 10 yards. He knows one speed....100 mph when a 30 mph is what's needed.

Agreed he has struggled with that but in the play in question I think a fastball was warranted

Unless we split Chandler or Gray out as a WR, I think we only go 5 WR in very few circumstances.

We've got one of the best OL's in the country. Our two RB's have proven they can house it on any play & demand defense's account for the run threat.

Giving away the advantage of our run threat to hope a 5th receiver helps open up passing windows sounds counter intuitive to me.

Keep it simple.

JG's not built for a 5th read.....

JG's biggest issue today is what it was in game one, his attitude. It is not mechanics or ability, he can do it, he obviously does in practice when no fans are watching. However, in a games he wants to show everyone that he is great so he pushes harder, hence the problem on money downs. Just watch when he makes a good play like the TD pass and him shooting the arrow, and him walking around with the ball after the game like he deserved the game ball. He wants to be great and just pushes to hard, when he could be if he didn't push.

There were two front tosses to Velus Jones (#3 and #31). There was one dump off to a RB (Grey).
