Charlton Warren hired as DB coach

The day a coaching position at UT is equal to the same position at UNC will be the day I officially give up.

Fade I think you're misunderstanding what he's saying. The current state of UT is not equal to the recent success that UNC has had. So therefore its kinda a bump down or lateral. Not a negative just going from Fedora with comfort and job security to a CBJ who could be fired if things go wrong next year. And no not saying that will happen but anything is possible on the hill now a days

You are dead wrong. UNC is a great basketball and academic school. They've had sporadic success in football but that aren't in the same stratosphere as UT football. His move to Knoxville proves that. If he can do for UT defensive backs what he did for UNC, he will be in line for a DC job somewhere. UT is big boy football.

He's taking a step up and he know's it.

I've been pretty critical of Butch here lately, but after watching some of Warren's coaching vids, I really like the hire. He seems smart, energetic, and he seems to always be giving instruction on the practice field. Then I watched some of Martinez's coaching vids, and the difference is pretty obvious. I wish we could have gotten this guy last year, because I think Cam Sutton's draft stock would be alot higher right now if we had.

I think having Warren will really help bring to light in greater detail some of GT's tendencies for our opener next year. His résumé is extremely impressive!

i think anytime you have a change of coordinators, even when they say they won't change too much up, takes more of adjustment than us fans think. i just don't believe shoop forgot everything overnight that made him a highly respected defensive coach.

Some want to throw Shoop under the bus but forget the injuries we had. I want to see Shoop with his system in place with limited injuries then make a decision.

I am going to sound like a jerk, but that's what telling the truth has become these days. To play smart defense you need smart kids. We don't exactly recruit at the same intelligence level as some of these other schools which has always been a reflection on our academics although Butch was/is committed to changing than and has made up some ground, but the point still remains.

Id say thats true in some ways but also when i listen to half the bama defensive players and honestly question whether they can spell their own names i kinda disagree. Id say its a great way to overcome people who are much more athletic than you are but sheer athleticism, mixed with effort and dedication usually trumps smarts. At least in college ball.

I've been watching this one and there's others that are similar from his time at NC.

So I feel like the players ( at least in this video ) respond well to him.. they seem to want his approval which is good and his criticism it direct and to the point without really selling anybody out.. From what I see he's a players coach that wont mind shoving his boot up your a** if you need it.. I like it and he seems like a good fit. Hopefully he can turn our secondary around.

They can't let Thig go. Lb is not a problem @ all. Plus he is a major recruiting piece and the "Closer". The changes will be Mahoney, Strip, and possibly Z because he was supposedly upset when he wasn't considered for OC job.

Whether Thigpen is a problem or not... LB has been a MAJOR problem.

LB coaches who can recruit... It is a virtual prerequisite for the title. There are bunches of them out there.

IMO, the much larger question is whether Thigpen and Shoop mesh.

I can sort of agree with this, but to be fair when you are plugging in 3rd stringers at LB you are going to give up a lot of plays. That's just the way it rolls dude.
