“When I got to school in 1982, we were freshmen and we beat Alabama for the first time in 11 years,” he said. “Then in 1983, we went to Birmingham and played them and we beat them that year, too. So who is going to be that class, that group to usher in a new era and in conjunction with the other classes that are around them and gives them that chance and make the Third Saturday in October something special again? We are counting on Coach Pruitt and his crew to make it that way and Coach Fulmer can tell him all about it going 11-5 against Alabama."

Charles Davis has 'full support' for Pruitt, looking forward to 'competing for championships down the road'

I would say that we wait until Saban retires and then the ineffective new hire will take the program in to a tail spin and probably 3 years later we will get a win in Neyland Stadium. So, I say it will be 3 seasons after Saban retires.
The development of their players is far, far better than ours, at this point. The S & C of their players is much, much better than our S & C of our players right now. Their recruiting of their players is better than ours is right now. Their in-game adjustments is better than ours right now. Their killer instinct is better than ours. I see games in which we HOPE to win a game. O'Bama doesn't hope to win games, they expect to win each and every one of them.
Fella's, we have a long ways to push that bolder up the hill before we can catch them and a little further than that before we can beat them.... 1 practice at a time......

Answer: Not these current classes.
dunno about that. not saying they will. but between what we're looking at just at OL in the next two classes, by they time they're Jr's, i think you're going to see an offensive front that can actually be as physical as some of the defensive fronts we get to go against year in, year out. and if you have an offensive line, you have a chance.

i don't worry about the defense (no reason to yet) given the pedigree on the defensive side of the ball.

we see what Helton is as an OC, and if he can get a QB and some more skill position players.......who knows. you might have a Jr or Sr or two out of this class that gets to smoke a cigar before they leave Knoxville.

Depends on when Saban leaves.

If we are going to beat them while he's still there, then we have to get a lot more overall talent on the roster, have a mobile QB (when Saban loses, it's almost always to a team with a mobile QB) and catch them on a day when they don't play their best. Alabama doesn't lose often, but he's also only had one undefeated season.

Alabama will be a dominant force in college football for at least 2-3 years after Saban leaves. It's really interesting to think about how their decline will play out, but personally I think it'll go like this:

1. Saban retires.
2. The guy they bring in, whether it be Dabo or someone else, is good but not good enough. He struggles under the weight of the expectations. They go 3-4 years with only, say, one SEC title/playoff appearance, and no national titles. Perhaps they beat Auburn only twice in 4 years or once in 3 years. The new guy recruits pretty well, but they don't have the #1/2 class every year. Auburn and LSU are perceived to be rapidly closing the gap. Their fanbase, especially their younger fans who have never seen Alabama be anything other than the national favorite every year, becomes really despondent.
3. After a couple seasons of not winning the conference, the new guy is fired, despite warnings and lots of opinions from the talking heads that it is dangerous to fire a coach whose only problem is that he isn't as good as Saban.
4. The guy who replaces Saban's replacement ends up simply being not a good hire. This would be likely 3-4 years after Saban has retired, and any sheen he had on the program is largely faded away.

was there for '82...put The Bear 6 feet under!

Yep same here, was 10-11yrs old. My Dad and I road to the game with a family friend who was a BAMA fan. After the game, I was cautioned to not say anything to him until we got home. Needless to say it was a quite ride back that day...

This isn't about Saban retiring. This is about Tennessee catching up.

I believe the class that will beat Bama for the first time in over a decade is already enrolled at Tennessee. Just not gonna hazard a guess as to which class it is. But they're already there.

Go Vols!

I don't want any negative feelings here- but I actually failed to use my '82 Bama tix cause I didn't want to see another drubbing. I am admitting it here. Throw your stuff. I had 4 and felt Goldrush Junction would be more fun (if that's what it was back then). I have had a history of bad decisions, too lengthy to discuss. We are on track now! I guarantee you I was not involved with that decision!!

I don’t think you can be the number 1 Vol fan anymore.

There wasn't really any reason to think that the 82 class would be the one to end that streak as I recall. Lost to Duke in the 1st game of the season and wound up 6-5-1 after going 8-4 the year before. The Vols were 2-2-1 going into the Bama game which was Bear Bryant's last year as coach and they were down a little bit. Beat them from 82-85 all by a touchdown or less. The end of the next streak you could see coming. Bama beat us 17-10 their 92 NC year. Tied them Fulmers first year, actually, they tied us with a 2 point conversion and then Peyton lost to them 17-13 throwing at the end zone his freshman year. It was no surprise when the Vols steam rolled them the next year.

I think this streak will end kind of like the one in 82. It will be a surprise of sorts.

No question Saban is amazing, maybe the best ever, but he can be beat. Dabo at Clemson isn't waiting for Saban to retire before intending to beat Bammer, neither is Kirby, Orgeron or Malzahn , nor will Jimbo at A&M. They have every intention of beating him now. We probably can't beat them this year, but I'm hoping Pruitt doesn't hold a "wait 'til Saban retires" attitude, but pushes the Vols hard this year and every year until we put a whoopin on the Tide.

Before Saban/Sweeney there was Carroll, before him were Fulmer/Spurrier/Bowden/Jimmy Johnson, before them were Paterno/Osborne, before him was Woody Hayes/Bear Bryant, before him was General Neyland. The point is that the next great coach is just around the corner. As a matter of fact, he has already been hired and is on the job in Knoxville. WGWTFA!
