We've learned our community has lost another great teacher, mentor and friend with the passing of Rhea County and University of Tennessee Vols football legend, Charles Benton. Our prayers are with his family, friends and our entire community during this incredibly difficult week. Charles was a DB and PR from 83-86 and a VFL. Coach Benton was a career exploration teacher. He graduated from Rhea in 1983, and was a defensive back and punt returner for the Tennessee Vols. he was a Vol for life, attending a game as recently as last week. Students remember him for his caring, his hugs, athleticism, and his friendly nature. Funeral services have not yet been announced.

When my wife and I first bought season tickets (2), in II, (late 80's), Charles and Kim had the seats in front of us. The very first game, I noticed that gaudy 1985 SEC Championship ring, and made small talk. From that point on, we became ' Stadium' friends. He always asked me how that long drive from West Tennessee was this week. When our two little girls got of age to want to come to the games, Charles and Kim were gracious enough to usually let us use their tickets for at least one game a year. When we got to where we could afford the 4 tickets, we got moved over to ZZ14, and kinda lost touch with them. Charles loved his family, he loved the Big Orange, and always had that glad smile when we sat down. Our family was actually musing about them just a few weeks ago. He was just so kind to us.

Good player. One of the best games ever was the 83Rhea vs Redbank game. Multiple Division one players on both sides. It was an absolute war.Charles had a couple of great catches in the game.
