Can someone explain the ruling for a charged timeout when Stephens' helmet came off?

I do hope someone can help me out with this as well. I've seen other position helmets come off don't remember a "yellow hanky" being thrown. Does that rule only apply to QB's?

I think that left everyone scratching their head.

I did notice right after the call...

- they never stopped the clock (like you think they would if charged a TO
- scoreboard operator never took a TO off the board

That made it even more confusing.

I saw a running back lose his helmet in the USC-Oregon St. game while running with the ball. The ref stopped the play but nothing was said about a charged timeout or anything else.

If the helmet comes off the play is stopped because of risk of injury, that's what I heard.

But why did they charge Tennessee a time out. I was so pissed when this happend...

I don't know how it works, but it can also be called unsportsman like and a penalty be charged if a player takes his helmet off while on the field.

We did'nt call it. The ref flagged it, then announced we were charged a timeout as the penalty. They made SEVERAL piss poor calls. The interferance call immediately comes to mind.

There was no charged timeout

the ruling was "equipment malfunction" which means when his helmet comes off the play is called dead immediatly so there is no risk of injury

they didn't charge a timeout, i think he was just tryin to say the play was stopped and he said it wrong, or something like that

i think you might be referring to the "personal foul" flag, which a penalty sometimes is thrown when a player removes (or at worst throws off) his helmet after making a play, since some refs view it as a form of excessive celebration / unsportsman like conduct or possibly even a taunt.

As for the qb, i imagine there's something that if his helmet comes off before a play, a timeout is charged as a safety precaution to the qb. I'm not certain on it, but the qbs already have a lot of "safety" rules and penalties to protect them. I know they already have penalties relating to them not having their chinstraps properly fastened before a play, so some sort of "helmet be on" rule for them wouldnt surprise me.

course we might have just called a timeout too...

I actually think it should be some type of penalty for a helmet coming off. If a player can't or won't tighten his chin strap, he is more comfortable, but also more prone to some type of injury. I have seen too many helmets fly off this year during games I've watched. Somebody is gonna get hurt out there.

It happened during the play, Stephen's helmet came off, they whistled the play dead, and then they ref announced that by rule when the QB's helmet comes off the team is charged with a timeout. They never took a timeout off the scoreboard. I have never heard of such a rule.

I thought it may have been due to the fact that he didn't even remotely immediately go to get it. The helmet was right next to him when he got up, but he made no attempt to get the helmet. He got up, talked smack, and walked around. Had he gotten up, picked up his helmet, and gone to the huddle, it would have been fine.

I was confused by this as well. As Stephens was going to the ground he was hit in such a way that his helmet came off right after he hit the ground. The ref through a flag and then said "The quarterback's helmet came off and by rule Tennessee is charged with a timeout". But then I noticed that they never took the timeout off the scoreboard. What kind of rule is this?

We had 3 charged timeouts in the 4th quarter. The 1st was with 7:26 remaining after a Montario Hardesty run. The 2nd was with 4:53 after an Arian Foster run. The 3rd was with 0:18 after another Montario Hardesty run.
