Changing conference?

Most of us are Scots Irish. Our ancestors fled oppressive rule of the British crown

My Grandfather and grandmother on one side are both from Scotch Irish descent. The other side is half scots Irish and half English descent. I guess my granddad on my dads side liked the oppressive English rule of my mammaw. :)

Hey,

Just wondered if anyone thinks it would be beneficial for us to change conferences while we rebuild. Surely the fact that we are in the SEC means we have a harder time each year because we have to play NC contenders?

I could be wrong, but don't you think that moving to the Big 10 for instance would be better suited for us, we would be able to win lots of games, and then when we become a contender we could move back.

We could still keep our rivalry games with Bama and Florida right?

I am sorry if my knowledge is rubbish, and that this could/would never happen. I was just thinking that maybe we would be better off in a slightly easier conference for the time being.

It's true that going to a lesser conference my make more wins possible for UT, but that would not strengthen UT. In fact, it would weaken UT, since UT's strength would be measured by weaker competition. It's for that reason that most coaches that want to improve their programs in the long term actually increase the difficulty of competition rather than decrese it. The philosophy is "if you want to be the best, compete against the best". Also, the fan base would be turned off by the weaker competition. Just think about it, if UT played in a conference of no-name teams, then when UT won the fans would go "who cares it's a no-name team". The best thing about the SEC is the level of competition and the fact that every team has a shot to win against an eventual national title contendor, including Vandy. UT has struggled for the past 5 years and will eventually return to dominance it just takes time and a little patience. I just hope this year UT will have the endurance to make to the end of the fourth quarter before collapsing, although the past two years suggests that UT might struggle at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Of course, that was before Hart had Coach Dooley replace his Dollar General staff with a Bloomingdale's staff.

Stephen,

1) our recruiting would suffer if we left the SEC
2) our fans would never stand for it, and would lynch our AD
3) there is no better conference to move to
4) we are the sec...without tennessee, the SEC isn't really the SEC anymore.
5) going indie would make more sense than moving to some crap conference
6) it'll never happen. We've been in this conference for 80 years.

Of all the posts I've ever seen on this forum this is the most gutless suggestion I've ever read. Vols turn tail and run? Vols throw away 121 years of history and tradition because we have lapsed recently as all teams do over time? Pile on having ducked North Carolina and Southern California games making us look like a cat with mouse phobia? You should be dipped in pig's blood, rolled in powdered menstrual fluid and fed to vampires who haven't eaten for six months. It's not possible you love our Vols to even raise such a suggestion, it's just not possible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cycle

You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger, and you don't say "Vols to Big 10".

the kid's young and add to that he's just getting into college football so you gotta cut him some slack.

Steven, sometimes the simplest of ideas have more complications than are worth it. Moving from the SEC to the Big 10 then back is akin to England jumping over to be a German state until the economy comes back around then going back to British rule.
