Chaney - play calling very predictable

It doesn't matter who our qb is (unless he can create run havoc like Dobbs, which I don't see on this roster)...
when the D covers Palmer, the rest of the receivers cannot separate nor consistently catch. There is no "go to guy" like Jennings, there is no tight end leverage. Maybe Hyatt and Wideman can grow; I'd like to see them on the field more.

Need to get VJJ involved, too

Chaney shows little imagination in the play calling. Pruitt may be holding him back on the qb situation, but there is still very little change in plays. Very predictable, never getting the ball
to the playmakers. I don't think Pruitt is calling the plays, only the overall scheme. That should allow some imagination in getting the ball to Hiatt or Jones in sweeps, Gray on
some kind of wheel route, etc. How about some slant plays? Works for other teams. Surely JG can get it to Gray in the flat.

Chaney, Weinke, and Friend all need to go.

Chaney should have realized at half time that he needed to come out and not run every play as they game planned to stop the Vols from doing that. And they did. Poor half time adjustments/strategy.

I very much agree. For instance, he seems to be able to develop only pure pocket passers and leans heavily on the offensive line to create lanes for RB's. There's only so much you can do and if you can't pass worth a darn our opponents are gonna shut down or stifle our run game. Pruitt is top dog and he should know how limited we are offensively. UT needs a scrambling QB to get to the edge and improvise but that goes against the grain of Chaney's philosophy. We don't have a tight end, our receivers are not open many times and that's because they practice against their own team-mates who aren't yet SEC caliber defenders and come game time they don't know what to do. Just that one little added dimension would help UT's offense out tremendously and we had the guy to help out in Holiday and they've made the mistake of putting him at WR. Just like Crouch needs to be at RB if he plans on playing sundays,imo. It's a cluster-f*#K at UT and it needs fixed. I actually think CJP has given Chaney full control of the offense and very seldom interferes but many posters think otherwise. Let's hope we can move on with HB. We need someone to interject some life into this offense.

How does Cheney have high-octane offenses everwhere else he's at, yet comes to Tennessee and calls extremely conservative gameplans?

I think Pruitt is getting involved in the offensive play calling.

Add to that the lack of a competent QB.

He doesn't really have a "style". That's probably why Pruitt wanted him.

If you let Chaney show his "style"... you'd see something a lot like what UT did with Bray when he was OC the first time. He would focus the OL on pass pro until they mastered it. He would build an O that pressured every area of the field with the pass game... and then he'd build the run game behind it.

That is not the style Pruitt wants to play. He wants to be an old school, run oriented, ball control, defensive team.

Even if Pruitt let Chaney go... JG is incapable of running that kind of passing O.

Either him or Kirby let Fields get away. Don't know how that went down exactly but UGA fans blamed Chaney for calling too conservative plays at crucial points in Natty game and not getting 1st downs. Coley lasted one year and now monken is running the offense and they don't have a good QB with Bennett injured.

Chaney had good offenses at UGA. They played Bama for the title and had them on the ropes. He had superior talent all around him just like Pruitt is used to at Bama. Different story now. UT needs to be patient. This is a very young, inexperienced team except the lines. The talent is there and we'll get better. Would have loved to have Kendal Briles here while he was available or someone familiar with spread offenses.

His offenses were good enough at Georgia to get them within a play of winning the national championship. He made Fromm look pretty dang good.

The game has not passed him by. The problem is under center. JG just don’t have it.

I just hate that they had a horrible plan for Bailey. He comes in and we run the ball 6 straight plays and have him make his first passing attempt on 4th and 3. Granted he made the correct decision, made a great throw and it was a clear PI that the refs missed. I don’t understand whenever we’re down two scores we’re running the ball wasting precious time off the clock. Whenever he was actually allowed to throw the ball he threw a dart over the middle for a big gain. Whenever nobody was open he didn’t panic and scrambled out of bounds for a positive gain. He did his best with the hand he was dealt but I don’t think he was put in a position to succeed. Bailey understands the game better than a QB that’s been here for 5 years. Give him the snaps the rest of the season and don’t handicap him by putting him in a situation to fail.
