Chaney Officially named New OC

Being from the Big 10, hopefully he has some in-roads to in states like OH, PA etc. Contrary to popular belief, there ARE good recruits above the Mason Dixon line..... :)

Seriously though, Ohio high schools pump out a lot of D1 talent every year, and OSU only has so many scholarships. Thats how Ohio natives like Javon Ringer and Tyrell Sutton end up out of state. We could pick up a lot of good players in this area if he has ties.

No sir. Some believe it was accepted in principle and that the final signature will be given tomorrow some time. Ed is apparently taking the family on a small vacation to talk things over and make sure everyone is happy about the deal.

Thanks LSU, I appreciate the info.

On an un-related note, I went to the NC game last year when you beat the crapola out of tOSU. I know we are supposed to "hate" each other or whatever.....but those LSU fans were a RIOT to hang out with before, during and after the game. They knew I was a UT grad, and aside from good natured ribbing (which I gave right back) they were great. They pretty much just said beat Bama's ass every chance you get!

I look forward to seeing you guys a LOT on the future in the SEC Title game!

whoops

Chaney's name was first brought to my attention four years ago by another outstanding Purdue assistant coach, Danny Hope, who praised Chaney for his proficient and enthusiastic approach to recruiting. The next year both Chaney and Hope left Wyoming and joined Joe Tiller in West Lafayette, Ind.
I've been around several successful assistant coaches over the past 20 years who have moved on to become extremely successful head coaches and the majority of them did not have the résumé that Chaney has. He's not only one of the country's most successful offensive coordinators, but also is one of the nation's premier recruiting coordinators. Over the past three years, Purdue has been able to find blue-chip athletes earlier than just about any other school in the country. I begin my yearly recruiting road-trip travels in early March and am always shocked to find that no matter which player I interview and in what part of the country, he has already received a questionnaire from the Purdue Boilermakers. Finding blue-chippers and then mailing out questionnaires to those players is the responsibility of the recruiting coordinator, and few do it better than Jim Chaney. A major reason why the Boilermakers have become so successful in such a short time is the evaluating skills of the assistant coaches. I've mentioned a couple of them in past reports -- for example, Danny Hope and Brock Spack -- but the majority of the credit should go to the recruiting coordinator, since he gives direction to the entire staff.

A Purdue fan's take on Chaney:
Chaney:

Humble. Exceptionally well-organized. Can talk to anyone anywhere in any setting. Stealthy smart. Not too proud to think he can't learn something at any time from any one. Willing to fill any role needed. Incredibly loyal. Imaginative, but also can be repetitive with play calling. In other words, if he sees the D is lining up 10 yards off the line and the 5-10 yard in or out are 'gimmes', he's not afraid to chuck to a kid with good hands, treating it like an extended hand-off, 4-6 times in a row, or however long it takes the D to start guarding it. Really can't argue with that...kinda the old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule.

Jim played DT for NW Missouri State and was all-league...he was not gifted with a ton of athleticism, so he had to work his butt off.

Tireless recruiter. Remember that he's had to recruit kids to such places as Western Michigan, Wyoming (ugh...talk about desolate), and Purdue....all places that had little natural recruiting advantages if any at all, with much smaller fan bases and support. To recruit to Tennessee will be a dream come true for Chaney, imo. I mean, my gosh, Purdue is lucky to get any more than 2-3 4* recruits per year, and you guys already have 8 four-star recruits...almost HALF...and barely have a coaching staff!.

I do remember when he left that Tiller and all the other coaches commented that they were going to miss his organizational skills when it came to recruiting and how it allowed them to be much more thorough and efficient.

Also, don't be surprised to see him get Lane to bring in Scott Olson as the QB coach. They coached together at Purdue and St. Louis. Olson is a great talker, and knows his position. However, I'm not as big a fan of his as I am of Chaney. Olson came into Purdue and, imo, walked into Drew Brees coming into his Soph. year, making him look a lot better than maybe he deserved, imo. He got offered by Mariucci in SF to come out and coach Garcia and was Garcia's coach during Garcia's break-out year, so he got a ton more credit, then a year later Mariucci is fired, so Olson comes limping back to Purdue and Tiller believes him when he says he'll stay for longer this time (Olson's wife at the time was the Purdue track coach, so they did a long-distance thing). Tiller let his other asst.s, including Chaney, talk him into taking him back as TE's coach. Olson took it, then bolted after a year to be the Bears QB coach for Jaraun...going back on his word, and screwing over Chaney. Olson (this is all my opinion, mind you), returned the favor when he was hired by Scott Linehan in St. Louis to be 'Asst. OC' along with Linehan, and got Chaney a job as an asst. o-line coach when the natives where growing restless with Chaney here at Purdue. IMO, he took way too much heat at Purdue, though nothing I'm sure, as compared to how it will be at Tenn. if he doesn't produce.

However, he's always wanted to see what he'd be able to do with 'athletes like those' and now he's going to get his chance.

Personally, I hope he succeeds like hell. He's worked his ass off every where he's been and he's always been loyal.

Buckeye, I just posted how much fun I had at the UT LSU game a few years back. I really enjoyed the campus and the freaking river was awesome. The ribbing is just part of it. As usual some can take it too far, but meh, just have fun with it.

Hi everyone - First time poster here and lifelong Vol fan. Been lurking for a bit and I like this board.

Thought I would post some additional info on Coach Chaney that was posted on the VQ MB and I hope it's OK to post it here.

The following came from a Purdue fan:

From the Chat board:

I graduated from Purdue and was formerly an alumni club officer, so in my duties that way got to interact with Chaney and the rest of Tiller's early staff.

A few years ago, a business acquaintance friend of mine had me down for a game in Knoxville vs. LSU. WOW.

He invited me then to 'any game you're willing to make the drive to, at least once a season'. Needless to say, I've now added Orange to the Old Gold and Black colored Kool-Aid I was already drinking. We went to the Florida game this year and the Georgia game last year. Two very different results. However, it was good to see the UT fans in both a winning and a losing scenario, as it let's you into the true character of the fanbase. You guys passed with flying colors in all cases. In fact, I was most impressed with how you all treated the Georgia fans when everyone was walking out of the stadium and you'd just spanked them huge- a loss that ultimately cost them the NT really. No one was an a-hole or jerk. Very respectful and empathetic- no 'rubbing their nose in it' so to speak. For contrast, I remember walking to and from the Alamo Dome in 1997 for Tiller's first team's bowl game...first bowl game in 13 years for Purdue. It was against Oklahoma State. Their fans walking alongside us from the downtown area to the dome were just talking serious smack....just about challenging us to a fight. Whatever!

What was unbelieveable, was that Purdue spanked them 33-20, and that was only due to a late TD and FG by OSU, and that they STILL talked just as much smack AFTER THE GAME....saying Purdue had 'gotten lucky', yada-yada.

So, anyway, Tennessee is now my 2nd favorite team.

my dad graduated from LSU, but ive never been. Honestly, Ive been told that if I go, dont wear orange.

What is the deal with all the people saying that Chaney can't recruit? What is that based on? And wtf is up with all the comments about his appearance? Unless we are targeting gay quarterbacks exclusively, I don't see what that has to do with anything. Some of you people are unbelievable. This guy's resume is way better than Gonzales.

If he can manage to say "Hello - I coached Drew Brees" without stuttering, I think he will be able to recruit.

Heyyyyyyyyyy Sunshine!

And by the way, Bruce Wilkerson had a terrible stuttering problem to the point that it would affect his ability to make calls at the line. Somehow I don't think it made that much of a difference.
