I guess Coach Jay Graham was a waste of a hire...Just going to sit watch and cheer.
We have something we have not had since Dooley has been here and that is a real Running Back Coach.....which was needed....
The core problem is not , nor ever was the lack of a RB coach. The core issue is not the O line coach , or the O line. It is not the running backs,
The issue is the scheme . regardless of who is to blame for it ...it will not produce a running game in the SEC. It is interesting to note ..Chaney has never produced a successful running game . This offense we are attempting to run , was successful in the Big 10 , run by a highly mobile very accurate Drew Brees, but it did not produce a running game.
It is a spint draw running system ,,,which is the inverse of orthodox running games ,,,in that every play is designed to look like a pass ...and the play action is actually the run.
The running back is set deeper than standard , the QB drops or sets up in the shotgun as if a pass ...and then hands off to the back. problem 1 ) the hole flashes open at the point that the running back receives the ball. 2) SEC backers sit over the running lane and make a simple read . When they diagnose pass they either drop into a 'cloud' clogging the middle of the field and forcing the pass down field or out and under or the blitz thru the running lane 3) if they diagnose run ..they simply attack into the gap uncontested because there is no fullback!
This is a very easy run read they are giving to some very talented backers. It also allows defenses as a matter of coarse to hamstring the passing game
The Oline is catching flack , but due to the scheme their run blocks have to look like passblocks. When they plug block and hole block , they look pretty good....they rarely ever get to do it. Think back on the offset I they used against LSU right before the half. They were scared to throw at them so they lined up in various power forms and pounded it .
All of that being said , they must get the QB under center and run standard power sets and play action out of it with the back the proper distance from the point of attack.
While we passed all over the minor league teams ...we just couldnt run the ball...even against montana . In case any body has missed it ...you cant win the SEC without a real running attack .
