Chances on Bailey Staying a Vol

I'm assuming he will get to see the playing field at some point this season. Hopefully, not due to injuries but in the Vandy, South Ala games.
IMO he should leave as he is not a fit for our new offense, that is obvious at this point. Hate it for the kid. I'm thinking the odds of him staying after this year are 10% and only that high since he really loves being a Vol.

Hard to believe people care about this. Geez.

IF... he steps away from Tennessee, he would also have to relinquish his aspirations and step down to where the game and competition is slower.

But if he asked me to be his honest-mirror friend, I would have to ask him to be honest with himself and find his answer to these questions:

If your arm strength is limiting your play, is that something you could increase with training?
If your passes don't have "zip" and are slow arriving, are there changes in your technique that could improve that?
If your play calling, decision making at the line of scrimmage, or reading of defenses is too slow, can you improve that with more study?

Those would not be insignificant challenges!

If his life goals would be satisfied with enjoying three seasons playing and competing at a UTC, then there's no shame in that. But if his desire is still to be an SEC quarterback, then backing away from that challenge would likely affect him over the rest of his life.

Over the decades we've seen plenty of Tennessee linemen and receivers who did not become productive players until late in their junior season, yet went on to have senior seasons that attracted NFL attention. It's just not as "public" a process at positions other than QB.

I don't see any deficits in Bailey's game that--hypothetically--couldn't be overcome with diligence and hard work, both mental and physical. But that kind of all-in commitment needs to be his decision. As a person, his lifetime might even be better served if he took on that challenge at Tennessee and still failed, than if he dropped down to a level of competition commensurate with his current abilities.

If you look at Milton & Hooker, neither one are elite passers but they both bring mobility to this offense.

It’s very possible JH knew the O-Line wasn’t one of our strengths this year and he had to have a QB that could do damage with his legs in order for the offense to sustain drives consistently.

Watching Bailey play, he’s not a threat to run with his legs and is limited offensively. Is he a better passer? Maybe but the O-Line is definitely not good enough to give Bailey time to make the necessary throws.

Most likely, Bailey won’t see the field unless Milton & Hooker go down with injuries.
It's not his ability to run that is keeping him from the job. You don't have to be a great runner. You got to be able to get through the reads and have a strong arm to get it too them. You have to process fast, how fast he can run has nothing to do with it. Even Coach said you don't have to be a blazer to run his offense. GBO!!!!

I'm just thankful we don't have to worry about Cornbread shoving Jarrett Guarantanamo out there.

The question always will be if the guru coach had put as much time in Bailey as he did Milton, how good could Bailey be. It's fairly obvious that all the time put into Milton was a waste.

Who was Bailey's coach this spring--before Milton arrived? How many snaps did Milton take during the Orange-White game? Sorry. The fact is that Bailey has gotten more time with Heupel and time running this offense than Milton.

As for getting a fair shot, the fact is at the start of practices in August, the QBs were each getting equal time.

The fact is that Milton WON the starting job in practice, over time, while the coaches were charting every single pass each of the QBs threw in practice. Two weeks before Heupel announced he had a starter, there were leaks that our receivers were raving about Milton.

I hope Bailey stays and takes on the challenge of developing himself into the best quarterback to run this offense. I don't think there's anything in Bailey's DNA that will stop him from achieving that, if that's the challenge he chooses for himself.

I always said about Peyton, that of all the things that made him a great quarterback, only his height came from nature. Everything else Peyton developed, or developed compensation for.

Agree on supporting Hooker but Bailey can't be judged negatively by TTU any more than he can be declared the "best" based on scorching UT's scout team in the spring.
I generally agree with not making judgments off small sample size but HB looked totally off the pace to me

Bailey hasn’t looked good in his limited action in my opinion. Hooker appears to be the best option. Bailey looks like another bust for us
I think for some last year he became a savior to some. They were hoping he would come in and save Tennessee last year and they still do. I didnt dee anything special and think hooker is the best QB on the team.
He may have the best arm talent but there is so much more to being a QB. Maybe Bailey isnt good at knowing where to throw. Hookers legs definetly help vs the gators.

We are all so anxious to see Tennessee rise again, and the off-season seems so long, but many fans just can't wait for reality and start writing that script in their heads of what they'd like to see happen. Then dreams of "like to see happen" evolve into "likely to see happen."

When reality shows up with no script and things unfold naturally, I wonder if people who had that scripted dream feel betrayed, cheated, and begin to assume others (like Bailey) feel what they feel.

Stick to hoops Josh...this is a new offensive though process, Bailey was never going to start for this head coach. Under the old regime he probably would have had success

Appreciate the effort... but disagree fully. To win the job, Bailey needed to be much better in decision making and operation of the O than the other two. Apparently he isn't. They're at least as good. He needed to improve his arm and be accurate. Apparently that hasn't been a strength over the others either.

His chances have always come down to decision making. He had to be so much better than the others that it made up for their mobility. By appearances and some hints by practice observers... he may not be as good in operation of the O and decision making.

Mobility always factored in but it isn't the reason he isn't the starter.
I’ll agree with part and I also astoundingly disagree. His accuracy and touch on the ball is better than the both of them. I have a big issue with there decision making and hanging onto the ball to long. Putting the ball on the ground as a QB and not getting down before getting hit is also a major concern. Getting intercepted anytime isn’t good. But at critical moments in the game are no no’s. That’s what I’m watching AND those are the facts.! Everything else being said is opinionated here say. Mobility I have no problem saying that Hooker has proved to the better runner. He’s done okay but I don’t see that spark and confidence. I’ve watched players not being lined up right and not being set before the play. Part of the OLine issue is due to the rhythm and confidence in each and every play. Accuracy down the field is huge to hit the play get down and get lined up right and run the next play. That’s confidence and rhythm.! Facts facts and FACTS

. You may have been correct that he may be a bit overrated. Have to see if Heupel can develop him before I make that final judgement. But let’s get real here. You were so invested in promoting Brian Maurer that I am fairly certain you would have said Peyton Manning was overrated too.
It just seemed that way BECAUSE I know Brian and I evaluated them all. I’ve been fair in all criticism of all qbs. I never said Brian could do something he can’t and I never claimed someone couldn’t do something they can. When talking pure talent, Brian was the most rounded qb on the roster 3 years running. Idc who believes it or not. No one had the burst, top speed, throwing on the run ability, arm strength, accuracy and leadership all rolled into one guy like Brian. Many of those skills are being missed unnoticed. But he’s gone now so it doesn’t matter. Gotta go with whatcha got.

It seems HB has no place in UT’s offensive scheme. Play calling nowbis built around a QB rush threat. That aint Bailey’s skill set.In an offense that highlights his skill set he IMO will be very good.

I don't know that a team down 14 scholarship players needs the scholarship.Only so many players can be signed in a year.
We need talent and depth upgrades across the board. Every position on this team needs help. Given the hit or miss with recruits, juco and transfers, we're going to have to cast a wide net and increase our haul to give us better odds of finding guys that can help us at this level. We'll need every available 'ship for the next few years so Bailey is free to move along if he wants. Frankly, if he can't help in this offense, the staff should do both sides a favor and encourage the kid to go elsewhere.

Hard to believe people care about this. Geez.
Yep. If we get down to playing Bailey, this season is not only in the crapper, it's been flushed already. Not gonna worry about who's not playing. I'll be focused on the kids on the field.

Does it matter? He’s on the sideline.

Exactly. Check back next year. Don't know that he is gone and don't know if he is gone. Hard to say. We have a Recruiting Cycle and a wide open portal. Hard to say who will be here next year and who will not be..... This is all Guess Work and Speculation. This is a different world in which we leave and for the first time we are going to have to Trust the Coach's Assessment.

He doesn't have that "IT," the "hunger," the "drive." I assume he is focused on graduating this semester and will therefore be free to transfer wherever, however, whenever w/ two years of eligibility.

Dude doesn't care about UT.
