Chance Hall was a 3 star recruit by all but espn (4 star). On paper he looked like a promising project with a lot to learn. He and Jack played like vets against the dawgs. I never expected it so soon. He's just one of the many surprise freshman on this team. The future seems promising.

They both got thrown into a dire situation, and looked like world beaters. That's what great players do. They take over when things get dicey.

We need the same Dobbs against Bama as we got against UGA.

It's looking even better in the future... Once these guys get used to seeing different blitzes and defensive looks, they will only get better... give it another year or 2, and we will have one of the best O lines in the nation

Mahoney doing work....

Prepare to get blasted for saying that...

Chance looked like a seasoned upperclassman when I watched the replay on the DVR Sunday afternoon... He picked up blitzes well, when they used a speed rush he would ride them out, and then took his guy completely out of the ball game...
Jack played well, when he got his hands on UGA, he looked like a vet. But he had a flash or two on some stunts and blitzes where he wasn't aware and they slipped through...But that comes in film study and experience... I'm sure he'll be ready next week...

I thought it was telling on a big 3rd down and short in the 4th qtr, they ran Hurd behind Chance and Jack... If that's not confidence in two true freshman,I don't know what is. Those 2 need to be our starting right side OL

We gave Mahoney a lot of crap about Oline development. If these younger guys keep developing we have to take back all we said. I must admit that for the most part our senior linemen aren't that good.

Having a current dispute in another thread, how has Kendrick graded out in comparison? Previous games of course.

Yep, they came in later in the game and were fresh, but they looked fantastic! I hope to see them get a lot of snaps against Bama to see how they do.

OL is still the most difficult position for the recruiting sites to evaluate. He played at a 3A school in VA. Don't they have 6 divisions?

I think that's an overused axiom for the two freshmen (in poster's grading of their performance). In my experience of observing football (fan wise), you hear all too often how great OL's get stronger as the game wears on and the great ones wear the DLs down. Anyone else? I've just never heard of a guard getting pulled because he was physically exhausted...dominated maybe...not exhausted.

I swear volnation has the memory of a gold fish. I guess Butch Jones snap and clear didn't just translate to the players. This time last week, 7 days ago!!! Everyone was out for Butch's head and now our future is bright and full of rainbows. Good gracious

So you are saying that we shouldn't recognize bad things when they happen but if we do that precludes us from recognizing good things when they happen?

After Dooley, I made a decision to call what I thought was bad... bad... and what I thought was good... good. I'm not going to ignore good just because someone like you might come along and claim I'm wrong. I'm not going to ignore bad just because folks argue with me or don't want to hear it.

If Mahoney does such great work then why do we have such a sucky line overall- where freshmen can come in and unseat former 4 star recruits at a position where age and experience is usually critical?

Which "4 star" players have been unseated? Weisman played (very well) and he was a 3 star...if Jones takes his spot, that's a 4 star. Not 100% but I think Kendrick was a 2 star. Fact is with the 0 OL 2012 Dooley class, age and experience has been a crap shoot. Crowder rode it until this year but in the end just play the best players. I tend to believe some of the panic from posters stems from the prospect of Mahoney getting either full credit for developing promising OL or EGAD sharing credit with DeBord!...both frightening scenarios. :wink2:

I think alot of this depends on Debord letting Josh loose...don't hold back his running ability and DON'T try to make him a pocket passer.

Looked at an interesting stat this morning.

UT has allowed 5 sacks vs the SEC so far. LSU leads the SEC with 2 allowed. UT is tied for 4th with 3 other teams and in sacks/game at 1.67 with Arkansas.

UT is 4th in yds/carry vs the SEC... actually ahead of Bama. Ark and UF are two of the best rush D's in the SEC so far.

Versus Arkansas, UT ran for 133 yds and a 4.03 average which is far below their season avg.

A week later... they allowed Bama 134 yds with a 2.91 ypc avg.

UT's OL production has improved to at least "middling". Since the schedule appears to soften in the last 5 games... it wouldn't be surprising if they're talked about as a group that took a major step forward.... to "OK"... but that's better than "the worst".

Weisman played (very well) and he was a 3 star..

You think Weisman has played well? I think he's been a liability in pass protection. He doesn't appear to have very good "feet"... and I've seen him get trucked a few times.

Maybe the ones that the freshmen are replacing just aren't that good.
