CFN's Harbach predicts Vols for 1st in SEC east for 2011

I agree. Line play is key on both sides of the ball. I was just saying I am more concerned about LB than DL. I feel like we have more talent coming back on the DL than at LB. Then again, I wasn't as concerned about the DL last year either until we had 2 blown achilles (Martin & Walls), a bar fight, (Nelson), and a non-qualifier (John Brown)!

If that happens at any position again this year we'll be in the same boat.

You're right.

Next year recruiting lb's will be a priority.

It all starts up front. Our lb and sec will look much better if we can get a push from our dl.The best defenses are able to get qb presure with their front four only.I'm not saying we dont need to blitz but that cant be the only way we apply pressure.

Can't wait to see Couch and Jackson busting through

And when the prediction's first argument is "the coach is in his 2nd year," you know it's solid.

10-2?

So you beat 4 of Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas?

That's pretty bold and i am not sure most Vols would agree with you.

Don't forget, we've got to open up on the road against one of those soft, slow, no-defense, surfer boy Pac10 patsies. I can't remember which one, but that certainly is no cause for stopping our 10-2 march to ATL. :swoon3:

We'd have to have a lot of breaks for that to happen, and a lot of people step up early. There's just no depth to speak of, half our starting lineup last year were freshmen from the 2010 class.

There's a difference between Derek Dooley in his second season and where Saban, Chizik and Meyer were. All three of those men were hired because of coaching issues by the previous regime, not a lack of talent. All they had to do was get underachieving players to play up to their ability.

DD didn't show up in Knoxville and find about 50 guys waiting for him who could play winning football in the SEC right away if they just had a coach. Half this past year's roster couldn't play in the SEC at all.

If he does win the East in 2011--even an SEC East as down as this one is--he's done a great job.

10-2 could very well happen. I think 9-3 or 8-4 is more reasonable, but 10-2 isn't crazy. I don't think we beat Alabama or South Carolina, but Florida has an entirely new offense to learn and Georgia has no one to throw the ball too so we can load the box on them. We almost beat LSU on the road last year, so I see no reason why we can't win that one at home. Arkansas doesn't have a proven QB to throw to those talented WR's, and of course we beat Vandy and KY. So I think we lose to Alabama and South Carolina, then we have to win 3 out of 3 with Florida, Georgia, and LSU to win the East. Worst case scenario we drop two of those three and go 8-4. ItÂ’s going to be a great year.

I say 2nd or 3rd at best in the east.8-4 something like that for the season not bad.

Well we could have beaten the gamecocks if bray was put in earlier..IMO and the Gators,Bulldogs are both beatable and so is Lsu,the Tide is another story...Some is going to laugh but i wouldnt vote against vandy to quick they could be a team that could hurt a teams chances for the east title.Im going to say we go 7-5 or 8-4 at best.

I like the analysis but 7 defensive starters returning is not right. Someone needs to call BS on that.

Yes, I was wondering about that too; they must be trying to count all 4 dbs (which would assume JJ) as well as either 2 LBs and Malik, or 1 LB and 2 DTs.

On the other hand, I don't buy all the "aint got no depth" blues. I see us deeper in the DL, deeper in the secondary, and 3-deep at LB IF Lathers is fully recovered by August and AJ makes it in. (Lathers, Austin J, King, Probst, Vereen, Crump, NMT, A.J. and Martaze if not DE). Am not saying they are all equally good, but I believe all 9 will play.

After last summer I am trying to quit assuming any newcomers will automatically be here.

I agree we are far deeper on the o-line, at DT, and in the secondary, but DE's is extremely thin even with Malik sliding back out to take a few reps.

This is what I think as well. It would be nice to win the east but realistically I think 8-4 with a 3rd place finish in the east is more likely. We SHOULD be seriously contending for the East in 2012. If not, I believe Dooley will be in a little hot water.

I agreed 100% with Harbach!! I have been saying the same thing since last season ended! South Carolina WILL choke....they always do in big games (and it's at home). We get Florida early....this is the only season I've looked forward to playing the Gators early; I've always wished we could schedule them late in the season. Georgia is Georgia, and we owe them a pay-back game in Knoxville this year. We will have LSU in Knoxville ....I think we owe them a pay-back game as well. Their offense is very sloppy....yes they looked good in their bowl game but that was vs. a Big 12 defense. And we most likely will lose to Alabama....but next year will be a different story vs. the tide.
I'm NOT saying we will win all these games, but we are very capable of doing so. we should look a little stronger. Not only because they were freshman last year, but because of the S&C coach....this guy is really good. Watch out for next season guys!! can't wait!!!

I had thought DE was thin with only Jacques, Corey M. and Bohannon, but just found out they have moved both Sykes and Fowlkes back there. Also Martaze is a tweener between DE and LB, and Maggit and Jordan Williams are coming in, so now I am seeing several talented guys in that vicinity. That makes 8, not even counting Malik.

I've never had as bad a feeling before a season as I did last year. I feel like there is some hope for this next season.

in a season that everyone dreaded..Dooley is the real deal folks...now the good stuff cometh.....................

I think the experts will be disappointed in USCe... again. For the second half of Fulmer's tenure, UT was the default SECE rep. If UGA and UF had a bad year, UT was the designated opponent for the West team to beat. This past year, all three of the top East teams were down... USCe was the #4 default.

I don't think all three of the others will be down this year.

Stranger things have happened. Ten years ago (granted we had a proven defense loaded with talent) the VOLS had a starting sophomore QB from California, a starting senior RB, two very talented WR's starting and a schedule similar to this one.

Anything is possible.

Yeah and LSU wouldn't even have been in the game had we been playing Bray.
