CFN: TN Ranked 6th in SEC in 2017

TBH, that's a pretty serious indictment of a coach headed into his 5th season. By now... you really should KNOW what to expect from Jones.

Or... maybe we do and don't want to think about it? We'll see soon enough.

Let me ask you this. Take any decent team in the nation. Have their starting QB, best ball carrier, best receiver, most productive DE, and best CB drafted. Unless that team is Alabama under Saban, you hear the same damn things. Indictment my ass.

You must be a lot of fun at parties...if you are planning for it to become a Jonestown reenactment.

Come on sj. I said staff, not hc. You've made it very clear that you're not a Jones fan. That's fine. But, you can't honestly say that you know how this overhauled staff is going to work out. You can't say that Jones didn't upgrade his staff. I'm especially excited to see how much our lines and dbs will improve.

Really wish the media would stop hyping up UGA every year. Kirby Smart is no Mark Richt and the results are starting to show. Not to mention his recruiting is slipping this year so far.
I am surprised that with 3 5* QBs in GA this go round he doesn't have one of them. Also, I'm kind of surprised that UGA, Bama and others seem to be starting slow.

I don't know whether he upgraded the staff. We all hope he did but if he was capable of upgrading his staff why in the hell didn't he do it before now? I guess I'm supposed to believe that he was just holding back his A-team for when things got a little hairy and we needed to get serious.

Maybe he hired due to past performance and waited to see the results?

Or maybe you're correct.
I mean Saban and Meyer fire senior staff members on occasion also. Maybe they're just terrible coaches for not making the perfect hire the first time, everytime.

As I read the posts in this thread, I can't help but think about the post I made the other day (the Butch Jones "contender" thread) that none of us truly has respect for one another.

Most of the posts go something like this.....i can't believe they have team "a' or team "b" rated where they are. Look at all these things that are wrong with team "a" or team "b". This list is crap.

Meanwhile, I don't see anyone making an argument for why any team, not named Alabama, is going to be good.

If the rationale for why your team is underrated is about other teams not being good and not about your team being good.....you're not ready to contend.

Everybody's got a lot or work to do.

I agree somewhat.
But all teams being bad unless they are on par with Bama isn't realistic. I hate it, despise it, and every other form of disgust - with it. But the truth is, they have something rarely ever seen.
On occasion, someone steps up for a fleeting moment. Florida did, Ole Miss did and Clemson most recently but it's always team _____ and Alabama.

If you're vision is them being the standard or we all suck, well, we all suck.

You don't have to think you are on Alabama's level to think you are a good football team.

Basically, there isn't much separation between us and the teams we like to make fun of. Forget Alabama.

Tennessee went to OT with Appy State. Lost to SC. Lost to Vanderbilt.

Georgia was in a dog fight (pun intended) with Nicholls State. Lost to Vanderbilt. Was in a close contest with Kentucky.

Florida was in a close game with UMass, had a battle with Vanderbilt. The year before went to overtime with Florida Atlantic and was in a battle with Kentucky.

I could give other examples.

Until these teams go out and take care of business against mediocre and poor teams, it's hard to really puff you chest out and believe that you are a quality team.

BTW, when I said below that I think Derek Mason may be the best coach in the SECe, it's not based solely on the fact that he beat UT. It's based on the idea that he can go up against clearly superior football teams and quickly find their weaknesses and exploit them to the point that he can win the football game.

Butch on the other hand finds the crappiest teams on his schedule and finds every possible way to lose to them. It's a matter of leadership and preparedness more than anything. Sure talent plays a part which is why Vandys record will never be that good. But a horrible coach can have all the talent in the world and still fail. Good coaches can take less talent and win games they are not supposed to win.

The only game on Tennessee's schedule last year that they were not supposed to win was the Bama game. They lost that game and 3 others and were a play away from losing two others. Uncomfortably close to a 6-6 team last year.

You take the word idiot to a while new level. Please go root for Bama, you'd fit right in.

I do agree with this but not how you originally posted. That if you question why team X is ranked above you because they have a new QB, * when the author plainly said that he deducted points from your team for having a new QB, it's fair to call bullshat.
That's the part you are now omitting.
Nobody says they're good BECAUSE the other team is bad (as you suggested) they are simply questioning why it's a negative for 1 team but not the other.

I'm ok with it. On paper, like us last year, they look like the best...but could also be a house of cards. Didn't work out so well for us last year, and historically UGA hasn't thrived w high expectations. If we go do our thing we will have folks predicting sec E championship for us by 4-5th game.

If we are going to play the "uncomfortably close to 6-6" card...which we were, will we also admit that we were a close 2OT loss and field goal from being 11-2? To quote Parcells, we are what our record says we are... A decent team that had opportunities for SEC E championship that didn't make it happen when it was on the line.

Does it really matter? The games aren't played on paper. We'll know by Oct. 1 where we stand.

If schedules were switched.... OK.

UT was favored to win every game on their schedule except one. They had supposedly the best and most experienced team. A senior QB drafted by the NFL. They were supposed to walk away with the SECe. They even beat UF and UGA. They only left the state of Tennessee THREE TIMES. And two of those games were against first year head coaches. You please name me one coach in the country that wouldn't LOVE to have that set up for their season. Nobody had it easier.

I'm sure Mcelwain is jealous because he isn't a champion of life and doesn't have a five star heart. He will just go sit in the corner with his two SECe titles over Butch Jones.

Oh yeah, doesn't Florida play LSU and FSU every year? But I mean I'm sure Mcelwain would never want to have what Butch had last year. You're right. I don't know anything.

I'm not a Butch hater just yet, but I got to admit... I gave you a like for this one.

Some of you use logic that could be used in a way that would not support what you are implying.

CBJ 2 - Spurrier 0
Spurrier 7 - Fulmer 2

So CBJ > Fulmer

The interesting thing about Tennessee not getting it done with what they had in 2016 is that Tennessee did not get it done when Peyton was at QB, but got it done the year after.

That is not meant to be a knock on Peyton, love the man - but sometimes a team of nobody special who are not supposed to get it done is the team that rises above.

All this negativity is going to have one of two impacts on the team - they will use it as fuel to tell the negative fans and media just what they think of them through their outstanding play on the field or they will let it consume them and lose belief in their ability to win.

I hope it is the former because I would love to see the team call out those so called fans who continually bash them and question their determination and ability.

And I agree some of you need to go cheer for another team. Your dislike for a coach has lead you to make excuses for other teams so that you can bash the team you say you support.

The lack of confidence in the team by our own fans is nothing new to the players. It's been addressed by players these past two years, I don't think they will allow a few bitter fans to get them down.

So why does nobody believe in Dormady over there, but Feliipe Franks is the new star QB and Zaire is a football god (who couldn't cut it on a 4-8 team that plays a weak schedule).
