CFN Preview & pick: Vols vs. Appy State

I have a problem with the preview solely for the fact that it says this

Get up 14-0, and Tennessee can coast.

No, no, NO. We saw how well that line of thinking worked last year. No "coasting" should occur until we're up 30+ in the 4th.

I live in nc and have a few friends that went to asu they dont think they can win but claim there RB will top a 100 on the ground they seem to think they score 17 to 24

I think App will score more than some think. We will win easily but they will put up 21-24 points imo.

If App St. scores that many points, especially if they score on the 1st drive, the "FAHR SHOOP" threads will bombard this place.

This place tends to over-react...a little!:p

Im pretty sure since "the" upset, App St hasnt scored no more than 14pts vs a power 5 team. (Could be wrong but i did read that somewhere) During that time Va Tech hung like 66 on them.

So you're saying we should be worried about Va Tech :0

I think our 2nd string on both sides of the ball is as good as the 1st string we have fielded the last couple of years. I don't think this one will be remotely close. We have elite level talent all over the place.

App State is better than some bottom dweller SEC teams in my opinion. This isn't going to be a 56-3 kind of game. Like bowling green last year, they will probably end up winning their conference.

Yeah but...consider their conference. They are good for what they are...but this should be a bloodbath.

This will be a blowout! I stopped reading when the writer suggested Marcus Cox may be the best running back in this game.

Remember how UT looked against Oregon in the 2013 game? Remember the difference in speed between the 2 teams? The Vols were outmatched at almost every position and compared to skill players, it wasn't even close. The game was over halfway thru the 2nd quarter when it was 31 - 7. This game will resemble that one in 2013.

If Tennessee spreads it out and forces Appy. state into 1 on 1 match-ups, it's over. If Tennessee has to run it continuously to set up the passing game, it's still over...just not as early as anticipated.

Had this contest been the week before Florida or Alabama, I'd be more concerned due to the obvious potential of a trap game.

If that occurs, those comments will be every other post in the game thread.

Interestingly, Phil Steele, in his preseason poll, ranks Appalachian State above Kentucky, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ohio, and obviously Tennessee Tech. Athlon has them ranked above Missouri, South Carolina, Ohio, and essentially tied with Kentucky & Vanderbilt. An analysis of 13 such preseason polls indicates that the better pollsters, as tracked by Stassen, think that this Appalachian State Team could go 6-6 against our schedule this year. Those pollsters also think the upper half of our schedule, including us, would be favored by 3 TDs or more against the Mountaineers. Still, I think it's pretty good for them in their 3rd year as an FBS program to be in a position to become bowl eligible with our schedule. That's not bad at all. :hi:

IMO Marcus Cox will have more difficulty than most expect. He's running behind an O-line that has numerous new guys and repositioned guys from last year. Marcus is just one of several strong RB's for App. Jalin Moore will likely break some of Marcus's records before Jalin's career at App is over.

I'm not counting on any fieldgoals in this game for App. Our kicker is a redshirt freshman. He's been good in practice. His first ever college game will be in front of 100,000+ screaming UT fans. If he makes any fieldgoals, I'll be impressed with his nerve as well as his kicking skills.

I'll be a happy camper if App can hang 17 or more on UT.

That is plaid speed progress for their program. Kudos.

i think if you're going to worry about something with this game, for me it'd be the following:
--offensively, can we do what we want against a pretty experienced, and good, defense? 1st game and all, they aren't awful on defense, and should we turn it over....that could make this game a lot longer than it needs to be.
--knowing their limitations on offense, what should we prepare for....trick plays, steal possessions etc....i don't think they can line up and just "beat" our defense, so they're going to have get creative...so when they do, can we/will we still dictate to them?

I understand what you're saying, but; I don't want to see the VOLS "coast or letup" ever again. I want our team to go for the jugular on the last off/def play, even with a 100pt. lead. That would be with our practice squad of course, not the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string. Don't want to come across as a bunch of a-holes.

"it might have the best running back in the game in Marcus Cox"

No. Just no. Marcus Cox better than Kamara and Hurd? I don't believe that at all.
