CFN predicts Vols to go bowling...

Oh, I didn't read the part where they actually have UGA winning the East. Thought you were just speculating that. They're wrong on both parts.

I'm not so much bothered by the UGA pick itself as by the fact that if these guys are "professionals", then they should know better how this all works rather than just taking the bowls order of selection and simply just plugging in their picks based off their conference standings projections list

With all of the bowls that we currently have in CFB, teams with a losing record could still make it to a bowl game. Although I hope that CFN is predicting a .500 or winning record, it's possible they think we could go 5-7 and sneak in one.

That's not allowed. A team can only go to a bowl with a losing record if it is a conference champion who qualifies automatically. Otherwise, a team has to have a record of 6-6 or better, and there are a few restrictions on teams that finish 6-6.

If a conference doesn't have enough teams with six wins, then the bowl has to take some other team that is available and eligible, usually an also-ran from the MAC.

If CFN has us in a bowl, then that means they expect us to win at least six games. Which is not farfetched, with the likes of UTM, UAB, Memphis, Vandy and Kenturkey on the schedule. All we have to do is beat those teams and pull one upset.

If Tennessee has a choice of Music City or Liberty they would sell out Music City Bowl dont know about Liberty Bowl. We have a lot of work to do before that.

Well....it's less of the school having a choice more times and more "who offers team X first" when the turns to give out bids are going on

I could see us making a bowl game.....6-7 wins tops....I'll be glad if we finish .500

Saw that too

Was a bit odd -- not because they're picking UGA to win the East, but if they're saying UGA wins the division and Bama's the SEC #1 (meaning championship), then that means that Bama would have beaten UGA in the SEC Championship game the week beforehand

Unless they expect UGA to be undefeated (slip by seems to suggest not) then odds are UGA drops out of BCS at-large potential from losing the week before the bowls are announced; so that wouldnt happen

Either an overlook on their part or someone doesn't completely understand the process and is just making picks off ranking teams in the conferences

You already know this, but I'll say it anyway.....

At this point in the (pre) season, there are a dozen or so safe picks for the coming year. Take last year's BCS champion and runner-up, add in the top two teams from the major conferences, plus Boise State, pick a spoiler (e.g. - TCU), and there you have it. Next season's "Team's to Watch".

Yes, there's always a Cinderella team, but it don't take Kreskin, or Dick Tracy, to figure out who the top half of the Top 25 are for 2010.

And there's always the "edge player", who makes picks that...go figure...make the news. Hey, they get paid to sell words, and controversy sells, so...

Don't be the hound dog that ends up chasing the rabbit. Use the years of common sense you've gained from being a college football fan.

Could Georgia win the East? Yes. So could UT. Or even USCe. But the team to beat is UF, plain and simple. UT, UGA, and USCe are not going to all beat UF, so it boils down to who has the best chance.

Believe it or not, UT does. Does that make us the favorite in the East? Not by a long shot. We have to deal with the rest of our SEC schedule.

My point is this: Don't get distracted by the lone idiot who thinks "this is UK's year against UT", for example...been there...seen that.

It is what it is. This is a rebuilding year for UT. It might be a thin one. All UF has to replace is a QB, and Brantley will be okay. UGA has QB problems, and USCe is...well...USCe. Spurrier's best days are behind him. Joker Phillips has more to prove than Dooley does, and Vandy is...well...Vandy.

UF, then UGA/UT/USCe (in some order). then UK/Vandy (in some order).

I could be wrong...it won't be the first time, but until any team other than UF, UT or UGA proves they can rule the East, this is still a three-team division.

Go Vols.

I'm not sure why you were quoting me here...but ok

I wasn't criticizing the pick or the nature of the pick; I was criticizing the way he put both the east and west division winners in BCS bowls

If UGA were to win the East and Bama the west - as he claims - and neither team goes into the sec championship game undefeated (he also claims this), then there is no way that the loser of the SEC Championship would still make a BCS bowl as an at large bid. It's been shown before: 2001 Tennessee, 2001 Texas, 2006 Mizzou...if you lose your conference championship game and have anything worse than an undefeated record, the polls drop that team too far (since most no one else plays) and they fall out of BCS at-large range.

That's my issue, for an analyst he clearly doesn't understand how it works. I'm not going on about the UGA shot. The guy clearly here just made a list of predicted rankings and then threw in teams into bowls based off of that; someone who's supposed to study football constantly like this guy isn't doing a very "professional" job...because if he was he'd realize there's no way a 2 loss team that lost the SEC championship can still make a BCS bowl

He just took a list and went big 1 - top team, check; bid 2 - second team, check; and so on rather than actually think it through

6-6 = No Bowl. We have to win 7 due to UTM

no, wins over FCS teams count now full time. The NCAA changed the rule a few years back (it used to be only 1 every 4 years could; not it's every year)

that rule change was partially how Vandy got so close to breaking their bowl-less streak back in 2005

You are all going to be pleasantly surprised next fall. I'll be disappointed if we don't win at least 8 games.

You gotta have a lot more faith. Did Fulmer leave the cupboard bare for Kiffin? NO. And Kiffin had a good recruiting year. This will be a good year, better than last year. There's more stability & sanity for one thing. I really like Dooley and think he will be in Knoxville for a long time. Wait & see.

Fulmer's last couple of recruiting classes were horrendous.
