So Kiffin sounded a bit pessimistic about McNeil being the starting Center in the same article where Crompton is named the starter...

Crompton named starter; injuries mount GoVolsXtra

I'm hopefully optimistic that this is nothing to read into but I've got two questions:

(1) Is Sullins trustworty as our starting Center?

(2) If McNeil can't go who will be our back-up(s)

Sounds like Sullins has been playing very well according to what I've read. I think he'll do fine... the bigger problem is that we can't afford ANY injuries to the O-line with McNeil being down. We were thin to begin with.

OL has always been our biggest worry on offense. Sullins has played better than O'Neil and was going to start anyway. He is serviceable but not a star. Hopefully Josh can rehab and get some playing time his Senior year. He would help with depth. At this point it looks like Cody Pope would be the backup or perhaps Sullins brother.

It's being reported that McNeil's injury is going to require surgery.... so I'm assuming his career at Tennessee is in jeopardy.

Sullins has been battling since Spring for the starting job. He'll be fine if McNeil can't go. Rmember that CLK said that the best players will play, this injury isn't that big since the job wasn't overwelmingly McNeil's in the first place.

I won't drop names...wait..on this 1 I will. McNeil is a glory boy, he wears the jersey but he don't show up. He does as little as he can to get by and runs his hole. This guy is begging for an underclassman to take his job, good job deadazz almost a done deal.

There'd be no need to medically redshirt. Those are only needed for a 6th year of eligibility. He still has a basic redshirt (play 4 out of 5) left since he started as a freshman.

I really don't think this effects us a whole lot. It's a shame to lose a 3 year starter two weeks before his senior season, but as far as gameplannng, etc, nothing will change.

I have heard from more than one source on the radio that Sullins was ahead of McNeil and by a significant enough margin to be the projected starter anyway. It sounds like the walk on wants it more and is willing to do whatever it takes. I'd much rather a guy like that out there anyway.

Josh McNeil already redshirted. He would need to apply for a 6th year.

Did he really? My bad. Now I know why it seems like I was in college when he was being recruited--I actually was in college 6 years ago. He prob wouldn't be eligible under the NCAA's normal criteria for RS'ing.

I said 5th, but I meant to say 6th. My bad.
But what I said, I still meant. If he wanted, he could apply for the medical RS.

I know Cory and Cody, great guys. They work hard and are both incredibly smart individuals. I know Cody especially has a VERY deep understanding of the offense.
