CCM or Jon Harris the "Mystery Candidate?

Still have yet to see one person other than Rucker "laughing" at the fan base. I posted earlier that Pennington was part of the "Blame the fans" crowd.

It's just not what you make it.

Also, judging by Pennington's tweets, they are going to be talking about the petition. So maybe you should call in and take some of the "blame" you think exists.

Peace out dude. I'm done with this for the day.

Pennington is a joke.

he does… thus he feels no need to put on an act

I don't understand why people don't get this. Everything Bruce Pearl does in public is an act. It's a show. And yet people think that's "personality." Cuonzo Martin grew up in East St. Louis and survived cancer. I'm gonna guess that nothing he does is an act. Yet people crap on that and wish he'd start prancing around like a carnival barker. I don't get it at all.

I could careless if he dresses in pink and has anal beads hanging out of his nose as long as he wins games. I wasn't a huge fan of Pearl but that was because of his lack of half court offense.

You mean a 54-year-old guy doesn't rip his shirt off and paint his chest in public all the time? Surely you jest.

My wife doesn't really know anything about sports so she gets hung up on the players' facial expressions. I DON'T LIKE THAT GUY BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LOOK LIKE HE'S MAD ENOUGH. That's what the guys complaining about Martin's "lack of personality" sound like.

Start with Jerry Meyer, his father is one of the most respected basketball coaches in the game. You can go on to Austin Price after that, if you're looking for more head over to Jeff Goodman's page. If you want a little dessert after that take a gander at Wes Ruckers page.

You need more, let me know :hi:

So 2 of our own media members laughing at us constitute respected experts nationwide? Rucker is a hack of a journalist who makes Clay Travis look like a Nobel laureate.

Good post up til the carnival barker. No need to exaggerate to make your point.

Not to get into it, but Rucker was actually the best writer covering UT while he worked at the Chattanooga paper. Clay Travis has never had even 15 minutes of actual reporting experience. His goal in life is to be the Joan Rivers of SEC footbal.

(And now the best writer covering UT is Patrick Brown, who took Rucker's old job at the Chattanooga TFP. I'm going to guess that's not a coincidence.)

I don't think it's an exaggeration. Lots of Tennessee fans directly, negatively compare Martin's supposed "lack of personality" to that of Bruce Pearl, and Bruce Pearl is a sideshow huckster. I mean, of course Bruce Pearl did his first TV interview while wearing a full Auburn football uniform including helmet. He'd go on camera wearing a hat made out of s*** if he thought it would make people like him.

Cuonzo Martin is not like that. I mean, I certainly don't think he's the greatest basketball coach in the world but at least you can tell he didn't start his basketball career wearing a mascot's costume.

Go watch the WWF if you want "entertainment." Nick Saban and Billy Donovan don't have to act like idiots to win games and engage their fans. Saban might have less personality than anybody in North American sports. Are Tennessee fans such nimrods that winning isn't enough, that they also have to have a clown jumping up and down to make them enjoy it?

sports are purely entertainment for 90% of people, so yes, they do like that in addition to winning.

why do you think pearl is so popular and Green is not

I read a lot of sites about a lot of teams in several sports and it's funny, when other teams' fans talk about hiring and firing coaches, they don't seem to put a whole lot of importance on the coach's demeanor. They don't seem to care much about the "excitement" and "entertainment" the coach creates. Other teams' fans seem only to care about whether the team is winning. Why do Tennessee fans need clowns when other teams' fans don't?

i dunno, maybe you should go and cheer for the other teams then?

so sports are not entertainment.

wwf is entertainment.

people who probably get 40% of their posts deleted and tell you that you are an idiot = you are doing something right.

got it.

Make an argument on the merits. Don't just call me an idiot. I'm a fan of five professional teams in five sports, all of which have changed coaches in the last few years. The "entertainment" level of the coach has never once come up in discussion around any of them; it's all been about winning. I've never heard any SEC fan talk about his or her happiness level with his coach being dependent on anything other than winning. Why is it that only Tennessee fans -- and specifically, Tennessee basketball fans, because UT football fans behave like serious sports fans -- are so hung up on the "entertainment" and "personality" that the coach provides?

I'm confused as to why you think this is some sort of refutation of anything I've said. I don't argue with anyone who misses Bruce Pearl because of how many basketball games he won. I'll argue with people who want Pearl back because they miss his body paint.

Not arguing with or against, but:
Would people miss BP and his body paint if he didn't win? If we didn't go to #1? (I don't care as much as most about body paint). I also think the hype and attention led to a lot of big reg season games on primetime, which was awesome, and it's hard to argue that his energy on the bench didn't help get his team some W's.

I think Pearl did a great job promoting himself, both (in business lingo) to his internal clients (Vol fans) and his external clients (sportswriters). UT basketball obviously profited somewhat from that while he was here, although I don't know how much. It clearly did nothing to enhance UT's own brand because it was gone as soon as Pearl was. In retrospect Tennessee itself was fairly irrelevant, as far as the national media went, except insofar as that's where Bruce Pearl had a job.

I think Pearl brought in a bunch of new fans who had never cared about BB before, and that even if Pearl had happened to lose that Memphis game and never been #1 and hadn't won that Sweet 16 game to get to the round of 8, he would still be beloved by all those young fans whom he brought in to begin with. He was still sacred on this message board even before either of those things ever happened -- if you came on here and tried to criticize a Pearl coaching decision, people would act like you were s***ing on the queen. Pearl was able to make his own personality the focus pretty quickly.

Finally, I have no idea about Pearl's "energy on the bench" getting some W's. I've never seen Billy Donovan have any energy on the bench at all and he's going to his fourth final four in 14 years. Nick Saban looks like an irritated keynote speaker at the National Accountancy Convention and he wins all the championships. I think sideline demeanor is way overrated.

Some coaches do what they have to do to win and Pearl needed energy and enthusiasm. Others don't. Doesn't make it worse or better. Winning is the object.

This will turn into some children twisting my words so i won't go further, but in summary, people want to win and have fun. This 10 game stretch was a blast.
