Week 5 overreactions: Alabama widens SEC gap; Big 12 a disaster

"The Bulldogs might just have the best defense in the country, but they haven’t faced an offensive line quite like Tennessee’s unit yet."

“It’s like running behind a Mack truck,” said Vols running back Eric Gray. “You get the ball and everything’s just wide open, and, hey, it’s a touchdown — you know what I’m saying? So it feels great to be able to get those easy yards like that.”

Nice read, Ed, thanks.

This one line caught my eye:
The Sooners are 0-2 in the Big 12 for the first time since 1998....
Know what else happened in 1998?

That's right!

NICE quote...
Turns out Auburn was just a warm-up before showdowns with the Vols and Tide.

Yeah, we are really going to have to force some turnovers this week. And you know they are gonna stack the box and make JG beat them.
I think we don't play into their hands this way.

This is not the game where "JG has to beat" anyone. We don't need him passing for 400. Or running for 100. Or going 23 for 24. Or even 20 for 24.

We only need JG to continue to do what he has done well both games so far: manage the game smartly, make canny decisions, control the ball, eliminate turnovers, and take what the defense will give him.

It's going to be a low-scoring game. This is Defense versus Defense. Points will be scarce. Who knows, it may be one of those games where the defenses score more than the offenses.

I mean, for us to win, that's what it needs to be. This needs to be our game plan. Not asking JG to beat them.

You think about the Bama teams that have won championships in times past. Amazing defense, solid lines, strong running game, quarterback who can manage the game well and make ordinary throws to receivers with high levels of athleticism....

Sound familiar?

I believe Pruitt and the Vol D will attempt to do what the UGA D plans to do to us. That is force the QB to beat them. The UGA QB is very inexperienced and he was a fourth stringer for a reason. I think Pruitt and the men in orange force that issue. Likewise on offense, our weakest link even though he had a very good game for himself this past Satuday remains to be JG. The dawg defense will force him to shoulder the offensive load. If he does, the dawgs are in for a very long day.

Gus usually doesn't have a great defense, fair mostly, so Saturday really wasn't that mush of a surprise. I was surprised Auburn didn't put up more points. If Tennessee has all our front line players available, this should be a very nerve racking game to watch. I don't think Pruitt has shown his hand on blitz and stunt packages in the first two games so I expect to see some of those against the dogs. I don't expect to see the same blowouts we have endured the last 2-3 years.
GO VOLS!!!

Just FYI... UK rushed for well OVER 400 yards against Ole Miss. Their OL isn't their problem. Any YES... It's one of the best in the country.
I was going to say the same thing. They lead the SEC in rushing right now. Almost 100 yards more per game than UT in 2nd place. More yards per attempt as well. Their defense just can't stop anyone.

And ill-timed turnovers. KY is 0-2, but really should be 2-0.

I know shoulda, woulda, but they aren’t. I’m only saying KY OL is not the problem with KY.

So last power running Tennessee teams were with Fulmer. Fulmer becomes AD then hires CJP and Chaney that will bring back the Power running game of old. I give him partial credit for this running game resurgence. Now go run 65% of the time this weekend!

The turnovers in the red zone have hurt them. Not sure they were beating Auburn either way. They got pushed around in the 2nd half. But the goal line pick didn't help.

My battered vol syndrome makes it hard for me to believe right now. My gut tells me they shut down our run game and we just don't have the juice in our passing game to offset it. Our d will hold up to their running game. But their passing game will slice us up. Call me pessimistic, but I've just Been here before thinking "we're back" just to have everything come crashing down.

Hope fully you can find medication for that, like Tn 21 Ga `13

I don't think anyone would ask JG to beat them... Just not lose to them. The team must as a whole work together to beat GA.
