CBS Doesn't Mention The VOLS

I like your enthusiasm and am on board with alot of what you said but I just want to know, how do you know our coaching staff is on par with the top teams we play? How do you know they won't be horrible? Or the best staff in the SEC? Or anywhere in between?

I have seen a ton of fans on this site that have said things like "we finally have a real coach now" and "his team's will be aggressive" and "we now have a veteran staff" and now what you said, "we have a staff that are as good as the top teams we face this year" (Nick Saban with 6 Nat champ's at the ultimate dynasty, UGA with a coach that won the SEC Champ and played in the Nat Champ in his 2nd year, and CGM at Barn that competes with Bama year in and year out and coached one of the biggest turn arounds in history from winless to SEC Champs and a Nat title appearance in his 1st year) So our staff is that good without ever coaching a game together?

How do people say this? I'm as hopeful as anybody but where do y'all get this from? A huge chunk of this staff has never done the job they will be doing this year, none have done the jobs here at UT, and none have ever done these jobs together as a staff, so what am I missing? Maybe we can say we "feel" they will be that good or "hope" but everyone putting it out there like they know it is so, I just don't get it?

Rant over

I dont anyone can say they KNOW we are better but unlike last year, there are a lot of good signs. First, we have a coaching staff that knows how to train without injuring out top players before they even get on the field.

Also, lets face it, CJP may not have been a HC yet but unlike Butch, he clearly knows what is expected and it is like to call plays and win in the SEC and at the NC game. We dont know what kind of game he will have called on either side of the ball but you cant say he hasnt repeatedly been a signal caller against the very best, so he is not going to put something out there that is amateurish. Pruitt is not someone who earned his stripes in the mid-majors where there are a lot of cream-puffs to play and rack up a comfortable 8 wins with some super secret playbook scheme. No, winning in the SEC means having to go smash the opponent in the mouth and TAKE his ball from him.

Also, unlike Butch (especially last year), the players are reported to REALLY REALLY like playing for Pruitt, even though he supposedly demands a lot more. Those are good things right off the bat that are objective. Had last years team not just up and quit on Butch due to the locker room issues, we would have gone 6-6. Its hard to see where that is going to happen this year, even if it is the same people.

With that in mind, a 6-7 year is not really a surprise and even 8-9 wins are surely within possibility IF we can get a QB into a rhythm. More than that would be flat out astounding, considering the schedule we have this year.

Last years team without the problems could have been 7-5 and gone to a Bowl game which would mean Botch would have stayed Tennessee's head football coach. However would you have really wanted Botch Jones to be coaching Tennessee in 2018?;)

Nobody has any idea what to expect out of the Vols. How could you? We have a brand new coach who is changing the defense, we have a brand new offensive coordinator, we have several Juco's & grad transfers, nobody knows who the QB will be and several key injured players from last year will be back. So realistically, nobody has a damn clue what to expect. I realize it's preseason and predicting the schedule is a "thing" but it drives me insane particularly in this situation. Our roster is full of highly ranked players who in my opinion are just waiting to make a name for themselves and are starving for some good coaches to come in and show them the way. I believe Pruitt and his staff are going to get that done and you're going to see some players thrive. Tennessee could be a VERY dangerous team this year...they got some weapons and they got some coaches. Hope it's a fun ride...

Some good points that CJP has experience in the SEC as a LB coach and a DC. He has had success as a DC too. At UA, UGA, and at FSU the teams he coached for nearly always out talented the opposition and that no doubt makes play calling easier. For me it's hard to call though. On one hand he didn't hinder success at UA and FSU but would those teams still had that same success without CJP? UA, I believe whole heartedly would have still won those games as they have before CJP was a DC for them. FSU, I'm not sure? UGA, bout the same as they always were under CMR.

More than that, the staff is a completely different animal. They have coached in different conferences and have just been promoted to new jobs at a new place.

They have the makings to be a really good staff but saying they are as good as Saban, Smart, and Gus as accomplished as those guys and their staffs are before our guys even coach a game just didn't add up to me. I hope they are better than all of them.

How do I know for sure they won’t be horrible, I don’t. Anything could happen, but...

Jeremy Pruitt- unproven head coach, proven coordinator at the highest level with nearly unrivaled success as a DC. What made him great as a coordinator may not translate to success as a HC, but being hard working, detailed oriented, and a top notch recruiter will not likely translate to being a horrible head coach.

Kevin Sherrer- DC unproven, but cut from the same cloth as Pruitt and from a similar coaching pedigree. His responsibilities will be somewhat limited as CJP has stated he will be calling the D, but that is likely a good thing for the Vols as Pruitt is a championship caliber play called.

Tyson Helton- OC- unproven but this Jeff Brohm disciple has been a part of many prolific offenses. He has experience play calling for big time offenses but this will be his first year as the man. His west coast offense coupled with the downhill running attack that coach Will Friend brings from Co St should be a dramatic upgrade from the Larry Scott/Lyle Jones spread, but I digress. Helton comes from a coaching family and has a distinguished pedigree.

Our position coaches are mostly former players that were coached at and played at the highest level including a Heisman trophy and Outland trophy/Lombardi award winners.

So to your point, they may be horrible, but the way I see it, we are being coached by a group of winners that have a ton of upside. They will likely continue the success they’ve had at their new positions, but you may be right: they may flop with the added responsibilities. Can’t wait to see what happens. GO VOLS!!!

I dont care what they say about our Vols at the start of the season, it only matters where and how we finish!

Not predicting one way or the other. Been well documented we could be 5-7 to 8-4 and that pretty much comes from the expectations of our staff...Rough is the word CJP is telling recruits about this first year. Having said that did I not see somewhere that of the 22 projected starters (I know we don't know that yet but thanks for playing along) 19 were 4* or above players out of high school. Even with that the depth obviously is a MAJOR issue. Just wished the season would start and all the prediction articles by the "drive by sports media" would stop and we'd all quit getting offended by such writings. Just take one more deeeeeeepppppp breath and the season will be up and running and we can actually talk about something that's real and tangible instead of this other slop jockey media...JMO of course...

Having a majority of your players who made up the worst team in Tennessee football history still on the team will kind of remove you from the adults table...

The thing that I’m kinda hanging my hat on was something I said and was wrong about . I predicted that we would have several kids just quit when CJP and staff got here because I had figured they wouldn’t be able to handle the shock of having to give what was required of them in the off season and practices . I have been pleasantly surprised at this team . We’ve watched them reshape their bodies and just from what little practice we’ve been able to see , I believe last years 4-8 team has vanished and these kids are going to be a whole new team that’s going to take on the personality of our head football coach and I love it .... We gonna hit somebody in the mouth , and it’s going to surprise some people .

The lack of quitting makes me almost think we might have a decent coach..but I have to reserve judgement until after I watch a few games.

2018 SEC expert picks: Overrated, underrated teams and predicted order of finish

Not being mentioned as either "over rated" or "under rated" isn't surprising and quite frankly, I like it that way at this point. I imagine CJP likes this as well, he doesn't give much out about who is starting, who is excelling or who isn't cutting it during practices or scrimmages during press conferences.

Also not mentioned are the Candydores and Little Blue Pussycats, which isn't surprising either, but slobbering all over Moorehead at Mississippi State and USCe?? Really?!?!?!

The experts are self proclaimed. Stories are clickbait. If anyone really knew what they were talking about they would see a top notch staff plus a talented but underperforming team is CLEARLY underrated. The Vols are easily a 7-8 win team. Before the whipped dog negavols jump on me, save your words. I know you’ve gotten used to being disappointed and you won’t dare get your hopes up again, only to be let down by lack of execution and discipline. Y’all may not see how we get past 5 wins, but here’s a little nugget of truth that I hope will allow you to see the light. Pruitt coaches player to be aggressive, to hit, and to play hard nosed old school football. Our boys are bigger, faster, and stronger than 75% of the teams we will play this year, and our coaching staff is on par with the top teams we will play. We may not beat West Virginia, but I wont be shocked if we do. Aside from QB and maybe WR, we have better athletes on both sides of the ball. We were a blown play away from beating UF two years in a row, and CJP and his staff will not field a team that is unprepared or confused about assignments. UK, Vandy, and Missouri are wins this year as are the cupcake non conference teams. We’re not likely ready for UGA, Bama, or Auburn, but those games will be closer than people think too. We will have a top 25 finish and bowl win in 2018 with momentum that propels us to a Division title in 2019 and playoff buzz...go Vols!!

I like it! We know we're going to gain some positive yards just by not running a zone read on every freakin play!

It's a safe bet for CBS not to mention us. We are an unknown entity right now with a coaching change, some attrition, and a new staff. Why would they go out on a limb? Can see why CBS would stay away from us because they have no idea what this staff will do to turn the Vols around with Butch's recruits... The talent is there but the depth is questionable....

Plenty of teams to mention and we will make it to a bowl game this year. We will win two + games we are underdogs in this year.

Most of those guys were apart of a 9-4 team as well. Butch being gone may make a difference. We’ll see

I choose not to blame those on the two nine win seasons previous to the 4-8 season, especially as being contributors as members of "the worst" team in Tennessee history. Just because they were there does not mean they have to shoulder the blame! And they might have a chip on their shoulder and want to prove something. And from what I see today as far as depth chart going into game one, I am optimistic

In looking at the possible/proposed depth chart, I think we may have a very good football team to pull for this year!.

I agree, I'm waiting to see the product on the field against WVU before I go out on a limb in the win/loss ratio. If we win the game against WVU, then the sky's the limit and I think it sets a tone for the season. Once the guys (as it appears they have, have bought in, and they believe they can win)totally trust this staff and that happens, then I doubt many teams save UA and maybe UGA will want to play the Vols.
