CBS "Dead Coach Walking at UT"

Well I guess he’s a zombie. He’s been a dead coach walking for a few years.

The importance here is that this is the perception at UT from the national media. This isn’t “negavols” trying to stir up attention, this isn’t opinions from people who are just mad about yesterday, this is fact. We are embarrassing ourselves week in and week out and it’s time for a change. The people saying he will be here next year are flat out wrong. Just ignore them.

Oh the media is gonna have a field day with Butch Jones and UT now especially after getting accused of fake news last week. So much ammo so little time (before he is fired)

Let the shots begin and as a vol fan let’s just hope it doesn’t make our program a laughing stock which will hurt recruiting as well

The story references a 9.2 million buyout - that can't be right, can it? That's crazy.

If true my first thought/suspicion would be 'kickback'.

Yep, it's true. Unfortunately it's what Tennessee has done for a while. Give ridiculous amounts of money to coaches who aren't worth minimum wage on game day.

Butch Jones was nothing but a snake oil salesman to begin with. Charges should be filled for impersonating a coach. Our administration from top to bottom should be let go for buying into his crap.

Time to go all in on Chip Kelly...every recruit and commit we have knows his style of play. The offensive recruits know they will put up video game numbers...and they fit his system already along with our roster now. Plus he can make Garauntano his Dennis Dixon (PAC10 Off. Player of the Year), Jeremiah Masoli, Darren Thomas, and future Heisman winner now Titans QB Marcus Mariota...Garauntano is a prototype like all of them. Let's not forget RB's LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner gashed teams in his spread system. Kelly, Chandler, Fils-Aime should be licking their chops the way those RBs put up insane numbers.

Tennessee is the perfect fit for Chip Kelly to walk into and be successful...and if he could pull Mark Helfrich here for OC...then find a solid DC.....with SEC caliber athletes not the roster of 3 stars with a few 4 stars like he had at Oregon we will be dangerous and feared not considered an automatic "W" on teams schedules as we look now....Currie and the Power Boosters need to make this happen.

We have $17 million in reserves if I'm not mistaken plus SEC Network loot as well...we are not in the red like when the Kiffin/Dooley disasters happened. It will be a hit no doubt but you have to spend money to make money and to keep from going in the red from a failed product...Economics 101.

How does a middling MAC coach get that kind of buyout? Sounds shady to me...the two parties to a contract given free reign over the house's money...and we're the house.

I have zero faith that Tennessee will go after a big name coach. If Butch is fired, it'll be someone who's 8-4 in the mac, or something like that.

Which will mean the fanbase will have to boycott the program otherwise our woes will never end

More importantly, it's not all due at once. Per his last contract extension on 12/2015, it's 2.5M per year up to the point he gets other employment as a HC or assistant coach or even athletic administrator at a college or in the pros. At that time, the amount goes down by the difference in his salary at his new gig and the 2.5M buyout. The 9.2M figure is a maximum payout we'd owe if we fired him now before the USCe game and he couldn't find a job in one of those areas by 2/28/2021.

I think the 9.2 includes buyout of assistants. About 7-7.5 mil goes to CBJ. Buyout decreases month by month ie cheaper to fire him in Dec. than tomorrow.

That is a lot of scratch, but, it is more costly to keep him. If he is not fired then UT will almost certainly have to give him an extension. That just delays the inevitable and costs more in the long run.

Best would have been to never have hired this clown. A number of us saw this coming, but we were shouted down.

No big hire Saban, Meyer, Stoops, Kelly level HC was coming in here after the mess Kiffin and Dooley made...NONE. Hart had the deck stacked against him to start with. He found a guy that at least recruited at a high level just like a Ron Zook but coached at a MAC level. We are paying him $4.1 million you really think we don't step up 2 more to get to the next level now that we are in a good spot academically, financially, no NCAA sanctions looming, and a roster of elite talent that's way under coached?

Governer Haslam's interview in "The Tennesseean" earlier this week he repeatedly said we need to be in the top 10 competing for championships...said like 4 times in one paragraph...saying Butch knows that is what is expected at Tennessee. That sounds to me like a man that is fed up with what he's watching...but maybe he means it is MAC level coaching time again...I am saying I doubt it but you can take from that what you will.

Exactly. Hart gave it to him but it isn't as drastic as most on here seem to believe. It's time to nut up or shut up and Currie isn't going to leave his ego at the door...this is the chance he has to make the biggest hire in his career and set himself up as an elite AD too.

Makes you wonder what Peyton, Fulmer, and some of the big time big name donors that all showed up for that game...what were they saying to each other in their suites watching this after seeing us humiliated on College Gameday earlier yesterday morning...don't it?

Best thing we can hope for is Butch gets so overwhelmed he decides to resign and we don't have to pay him the buyout money. Maybe Currie is waiting on that to happen?

But they won't. Fans will still pack the stadium. 90,000+ will show up no matter how bad things may get.

Look back at the end of the Dooley error.
The powers that be didn't step up and make a move until the stadium started being empty on game day.
I'm not advocating a boycott or anything but we can gripe and gnash our teeth until the cows come home but as long as there's 100,000 butts in those seats, nothing will be done.

Listening to Doug Matthews. He seems to think Butch can still turn it around if he decides to play the best players instead of whatever he is doing now.

Sure, I'd like to believe this, but for a coach in the SEC for five years, shouldn't he already be doing this?!
