U Sports ranked the best and worst SEC coaches 1-14. Muschamp is last. They have Butch at 8th, and are pretty critical of his coaching last season.

Reason for ranking: There’s no denying how much Tennessee’s program has improved since Jones’ arrival. But Jones’ coaching flaws cost the Vols an SEC East division title in 3015. As a recruiter, though, Jones managed to sign two top-10 recruiting classes in 2013 and 2014.

However, last season exposed Jones’ negligence in late-game management. Tennessee lost its first three games after blowing 14-point leads, including two in the fourth quarter. The Vols switched to a conservative scheme in each loss, as if they were playing “not to lose”rather than beat their opponents.

This losing streak included losses to Florida and Arkansas, which was the deciding factor in Jones ranking behind Jim McElwain and Bret Bielema, who will appear on our list very soon. However, Jones is capable of improving his ranking next season should the Vols continue the momentum of their six-game winning streak and live up to preseason expectations.

This is it for Jones. No more mantras or excuses. If he can’t win with this team it’s all on him.

Tennessee is loaded with talent and finally has both the experience and depth to contend for an SEC Championship. But it all starts with coaching and Jones needs to prove that he’s worth his offseason raise for the Vols to make the leap into contention

Do you agree with his assessment? Think he has Butch too low? Think he is too critical of Butch?

Do you agree with the statement "If he can’t win with this team it’s all on him"?

Perfectly fair. He improved IMO in later games but that could also be a function of the competition.

He MUST coach better than he did in those early losses.

CBJ took his medicine last year, don't stop scoring even when it's out of hand. You can't know how many points you need until it's over.

Turn 'em loose.

Jump higher Vols.

Is Butch Jones still maturing as a legitimate SEC championship coach, let's hope so, it's time Mr. B. Jones.

Torn about this one.

Looking purely at results on the field in the SEC, parts of it make sense (like Butch being at 8)...but other parts don't (like Bielema somewhere in the top 6, not yet released).

Makes sense that the West coaches are almost entirely in the top 7 (except Sumlin, at #9) and the East coaches are all below them...but doesn't make sense that Mason (7-17 in last two years) is two spots above Stoops (10-14 last two years).

So you change it up, say it's about more than just on-field results. Okay, but then you gotta crank Butch up quite a bit, because every one of the intangibles favors him strongly. But he didn't get any consideration for that, so...how did Mason get above Stoops (or anyone else)? For that matter, while Muschamp truly sucks, shouldn't Odom and Smart be at the bottom of the list since they have absolutely zero record as head coaches so far?

I don't know, it's hard to take this writer's perspective objectively, because of those oddities. But it's even harder to take it as a more subjective work.

Just finding myself torn about how to interpret this. Can't find an angle where it all works together.

Yep, agree. Sums it up just about right. They rightfully gave him credit for all the good while rightfully pointing out and giving him blame for the bad. He was responsible for both.

It's fair enough. Butch has shown that he can do pretty much everything you need a coach to do off the field like recruiting, promotion, managing APR, etc. He's brought the program out of the dumps and built a solid foundation that should lead to some level of sustained success. However, he's still yet to show that he can do the leg-work in game against top opponents. Until he shows he can get his team to Atlanta, he shouldn't be ranked higher than middle of the pack.

CBJ would never be scored so low, if the writer knew that we had Dooley years ago. Dooley is the reason for any and all problems it may appear CBJ has, take away Dooley, and we'd have won at least two NC, and Three SEC Championships under CBJ. This year, we'll win the SEC and maybe the NC, inspite of Dooley, because CBJ is just that good.

If a team has the overall talent and enough depth to have some fresh legs in the fourth quarter it can impose its will while playing to run off some clock and hold onto a lead.

Last year we weren't quite there. Perhaps this year we will be. I think this whole "gotta keep our foot on the gas and score" thing is a little too simplistic.
