CBJ post-game interview

"I'm never going to apologize for winning." Love it. I love a coach that will push back on all the crap that the media contributes. Butch Jones controls the culture on Rocky Top. That's the difference between him and his predecessors.

You sound like some Republican politician. Look at this absurd response from Jones to a perfectly acceptable question after the game:

On what South Carolina did to slow down Tennessee's offense)
"They started a lot of movement up front, bringing the nickel a lot. And just being able to block movement, we were limited in some of the quarterback run packages. But I'm never going to apologize for winning. This is a hard-fought game. We're playing a good football team, and I give South Carolina all the credit in the world. They're on scholarship, they're going to have success. We're still building. I'm proud of our players. I'm proud of our program. But we need to start being positive around here, because we've got kids that are giving it their all every single day. These kids are giving everything that they have. We've got kids battling that I don't talk about with injuries that are giving everything that they have. Our offensive line was gritty today. They kept going down and down and down, and they want to go back in. It's my job to protect these young men and protect our program. We're building something special here and I think we all need to realize that. I love y'all, I love Tennessee, but I want positivity because recruits want to be here, everybody wants to be here, and we're going to build something special."

Jones is asked what SC did to stop the UT offense that had rolled to a 17 point lead in the first quarter--and the coach gets weird and defensive and suggests that the media is being unfair and negative to ask such a question. He says that players are injured (yea, every team is banged up); that he needs to "protect these young men and protect this program (from what--horrible questions about why your offense stalled in the second half?); that he wants "positivity." Positivity from whom? The media? The media's job is not to throw rose pedals at the program. Just answer the questions, coach, and don't overreact to simple questions and don't be weird and defensive and try to bully the media. That is BS.

I didn't watch it but I'm sure I can get close with a summary...were so young. We have no depth. It'll be another 5 or so years before we have usc's depth. They are amazing. Most of our players have never played South Carolina. Most of our players have never even been to South Carolina. Some of them didn't know what South Carolina was.

" We won in spite of myself. I love these players. They won this game. I thought I needed to call that timeout because we weren't ready on D for South Carolina to get the penalty "

I am hoping that the commentator made a mistake on who called that TO. I'm really hoping. Shirley, Butch wouldn't have called that TO. Shirley he didn't.

Florida is also a young team. With limited depth. And a new coach. Who had open calls for OL and a kicker this year. And who lost their starting QB for the season. And is winning with a backup QB who is young, with limited snaps.

Florida just won the SECE despite all these things. It can be done. We just didn't do it.

Florida's D doesn't have limited depth...probably just behind Bama in overall D...Bama has a strong front 7 but Florida has a better secondary...

Hopefully, with continued recruiting, we can match their talent level in the near future...

Odd response to a typical post game question.

Maybe this guy run over Jones mailbox and didn't leave a note.

sounds like more garbage from a bad coach. get a offensive coordinator that isn't so damn conservative we will be fine.

We play to this teams strengths. Who'd though VN would be complaining about a Vols team running too much. Most on here probably favor a run heavy offense, yet when that's what they get, they complain about it.

Florida's defense is elite and light years better than what we have that is why it's different. That is the same reason Missouri has been making the SECCG.

By your comments, I am guessing you think that CJM inherited the same situation and talent that Butch did?

Maybe next time, Butch will respond with a Democratic politician response...you know, something like "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

We don't have the players to have an effective passing game and our injuries are starting to limit our ultimate success. Our coach is playing with the roster that is available for each game. Given this team's passing effectiveness, playing conservatively might be the best call. But what do I know?

There are a lot of public figures who try to deflect attention away from negative issues or poor performance or problems by blaming the media. It's BS--and I don't like to see coaches trying that bull**** and trying to blame the media. Just answer the question, man up: say, 'We played a poor second half but we did enough to win' or somesuch. Don't act like you and the program are being persecuted because a journalist asks a legit question; don't kick the messenger because you're the coach and think you can. I like Jones--but he's gotten on this "don't bring us down" by asking tough questions kick that is obnoxious and really unprofessional.

It's the only thing he is good at.....par for the course!

In a season or two you'll be saying the same thing. He's incompetent, he's blown so many games, he's got to go...you just haven't realized it yet. Butch blew another 17 point lead. This time to an absolute terrible team. With a first year qb. At home

You say that sarcastically but TN has played more true freshman the past 2 years than any other power 5 team...

So why does it make you so angry for Butch to say that we are a young team? You do realize that we are a young team, right?

Per Phil Steele in the preseason, multiple SEC teams have more youth this year than UT, including UGA, UF, and Bama.

Youth is relative. But I will admit, it is a stronger excuse than "playing at home creates pressure" and "the weather affected our side of the field."
