CBJ = poor man's Urban Meyer

Well when OSU and UT continues to watch their conference championship games from home because both coaches are egomaniacs who won't let their coordinators coordinate, then maybe you will see the resemblance.

When you learn that 3 National Titles > 0 National Titles, you'll see how stupid your comparison is.

Name a coach that is without a doubt 100% better than Butch Jones and who you know we can get. Then I'll listen.

Until then, 8 and 9 win teams aren't so bad considering where we've been.

Butch Jones is Jim Donnan at UGA in the mid-90s
Inherited a mess from Ray Goof, recruited well, and celebrated some Outback Bowls. No championships, no East titles. His record in 5 years:
5-6
10-2
9-3
8-4
8-4
40-19
If Butch goes 9-4 again, he's 39-26. Almost identical, with Butch getting an extra cupcake win every year.

UGA fired him because they knew he'd never elevate them beyond that. He didn't meet their standards.

Are some of you Butch defenders saying your expectations are lower than our East rival? UGA also fired Richt after 3 years of futility after winning the East back to back years. He averaged winning 10 games a year and had an SEC record of 83-37. Let that sink in.

Butch is a decent coach and a good recruiter/program builder. He isn't a championship winning coach.

Tennessee is a top 10 winning school in college football. We need a coach that exemplifies that and as fans and alumni we should expect that. An 8-4 coach doesn't cut it at traditional powers like UT, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, LSU, or Auburn.

Agreed. 8-4 in the regular season should be the floor at UT; it seems to be Butch's ceiling.

If 8 and 9 win teams are what you want, then sign him to a lifetime contract.

If I'm John Currie, I'm calling Chip Kelly and seeing what his interest level is. But I certainly wouldn't let Jones go without a short list of names that I've already been in contact with (or their agent).

Chip Kelly would elevate us to regular East winners immediately with a shot every year at an SEC title and playoff contention. Saban is 65 years old. He doesn't have many more years. We would own this conference for a while when he retired. I'm sure Dabo would be headed Bama's way though.

Exactly. I would make him say no, to multiple offers. The guy is a proven winner and runs a killer offense that we (supposedly) have recruited players for. I would think he could walk in on day 1 and we would see a fairly dramatic change, at least on offense.

OMG!!! Lol. Really. Only thing I agree with is everything the OP said except the comparison of coaches.

Second I want to ad is both are total scheme coaches. Except Meyer would have had had a qb run straight ahead on first and inches at the goal line. Most of those Tebow runs and every QB he has had just bulled through the defense.

Hear me out before you roast me. Outside of the stupid comments and gimmicks that Butch throws around, these two individuals are pretty much the same coach. Both are great recruiters, both are horrible in game coaches, and both are handcuffing their teams with their huge ego's and inept offences. Neither can beat you if they don't out talent you, except Urban's national title at OSU where they caught lightening in a bottle (give that trophy to Devin Smith). Both have been through multiple OC's and still have the same crappy offense. Everyone loves the idea of having Urban Meyer, well for the most part we have him. We need a HC that is defensive minded, Brent Venables, Bud Foster, ect.

Butch Jones isn't even a homeless meth addict's Urban Meyer.

When has Urban done anything without Superior talent. I watch every OSU game to root against them, I see the same thing I see every Saturday when I watch Tennessee. Against Oklahoma start of second half, JK Dobbins rooms it down their throats, they score a touchdown. He doesn't see the ball the rest of the game. Michigan State a few years back, playoffs in their back pocket, windy and raining, Elliot running on Michigan State, let's throw the ball 30 times and lose. Was outcoached by Frank Beamer twice, just out talented them once. Out coached by Franklin. Guarantee with the same talent, there are a dozen or more coaches out there that win more conference titles and national titles than Urban.

I love how you're acting like this is the NFL and a coach has to work with the players a GM brings in. Newsflash, in college the head coach is the GM. Recruiting is one of the most important things a head coach does. Meyer has better players because he is a better recruiter.

You know Chip doesn't want to recruit, right? He'd be a terrible fit in the SEC.

It's hard to imagine the comparison between Meyer and Jones as it is, but discounting huge aspects of the job like recruiting and staff management aren't really helping you. Meyer assembled all those great players and coaches, few people can.

Urban Meyer and Butch Jones are both college football coaches.

That's about all they have in common.
