Yes, but in his defence he's not from the SEC so we should have known his coaching style would be way different .

But he's a outstanding recruiter and for that reason I'm glad to have him at UT and I believe he will either get better as a Sec coach or he will not.

With out him we would be in terrible shape.

Time will tell but so far he has a ways to go. Can only win when he has a clear talent advantage. If it is close to even the stats say we lose. He has yet to pull an upset ie beat another team with more talent. Great coaches find a way to get this done. He can still become a great coach but needs to ditch some tendencies.

Overrated, I don't think that is the case. If you listen to the media, it is always IF UT's players are ready to play, I think these two classes, as it relates to being ready, is what I would call overrated, their too young and the OU and FLA game has highlighted that for me, I wasn't sure what "ready" really meant, the physicality and mental preparedness take more than one year.......that is the SEC. Was Deborg ready........no.

He's not the type of coach we expected him to be. Let's just put it that way.

Overrated? Only by the same fans that thought he "gets it" during his dwindling honeymoon phase. I dont think the media regarded this as a home run hire. I think it was seen as a settle after Strong turned us down.

Hope it turns out he is currently Underrated.

He had non-descript tenures at Western Michigan and Cincinnatti. He was by no means a top tier choice for UT.

He is what most thought he was, maybe slightly worse.

People keep throwing out this "he's a great recruiter" thing, as if Tennessee doesn't recruit itself; gorgeous city, amazing stadium, amazing facilities, etc. I researched this once in another thread; after 3 seasons, Dooley's 3 recruiting classes averaged a 13th place ranking, Butch's first 3 classes average 10th. My point is, it's EASY to recruit to UT because the place is awesome. The bottom line is, UT has a guy who cannot coach, it's pretty much unanimous now amongst anyone with brains and without a bias.

I thought he was fine until he hired his buddy Debord. This old has been or never was will doom Butch unless he makes some major changes. His coaching career depends on it.

I'm not bashing CBJ, but I will agree to a respectful level with your comment. Coaching in the SEC is more than getting the recruits, it's learning how to win at a level that is almost inconceivable by any coaches that never coached in this league.

I believe CBJ can coach, but he is going to get his lumps first, When and IF the lights go off, Butch will be the man from Hardknocks U, he has passion, that to me is the biggest attribute, he knows how to recruit, he can get the whole organization behind the sports program, he just has not had his ass whipped like this before, and you know, IT FRICKEN HURTS! He is not from the south and I not bashing others, but this fan base (ALL SEC) are some really fricken lunatics, I mean they name their children after student athletes, tattoos, lawns are mowed with the T and painted, videos of singing Rocky Top.....the list goes on. You have to have had someone in the cometary before your considered a true southerner. Come'on give this guy a break, he did not grow up in Tennessee, and I think he's finding out how big of deal UT Football really is, he says the right stuff, but he is going to have to live longer than 3 years in this Holier the Holly Places to get the true meaning of Fanaticism in Orange Country.

I'm only saying this, because it's true the culture is not like anything else in the whole nation......but I think he knows now how fast the fans will jump off that band wagon, but the upside, they will jump back on just as fast when you start winning......Hypocrisy at its highest level!

Go Vols!!! :rock::rock::rock::rock::rock:

He can not continue to recruit at that level if he continues on this path.

You need to let that one go. If I am not terribly mistaken you used that same line last year and of course you were proven wrong then. I do realize you have left an open statement by not boxing yourself in with a time frame for your declaration so I'll have to give some slack on that one.:)

And great coaches like Urban sometimes lose games to teams like VT even if they have less talent

Not we you speak for yourself.

I wasn't for sure if you thought I was defending him so I'll just say this. My first impression of Butch was that he seemed like a smart coach and I thought he knew how to manage a game. So far, he's done the exact opposite and quite frankly, I find it to be embarrassing.
