It was a response to someone who earlier in the thread was trying to make the case we could/should have been 10-2 this year and I pointed out that if you break down all the games honestly, then it was much more likely that we could have gone 6-6 (App State and UGA were incredibly lucky wins for us, while nobody beat us by being lucky).

I find it interesting how the "sunshine pumpers" blast the "negavols' for being critical of Butch Jones, his program, his player development and now his recruiting. These very same posters criticize the negavols because their constant negativity allegedly damages almost every aspect of the program from recruiting to on-the-field performance to national perception.

However when Butch Jones becomes the laughing stock of local, regional and national sports programs (including radio, TV, print, & social media) due to the very statements that come out of his own mouth, the "sunshine pumpers" vehemently refuse to hold Jones to the same standard.

If the negavols are so powerful that their social media posts can be detrimental to virtually every aspect of the Volunteer football program then it is only logical that Head Coach Butch Jones own goofy statements and euphemisms can and do have an even greater adverse effect on the program!

These comments - "Championship of Life" & "The only 5-star that we even concern ourselves with is a 5-star heart" - do not come off well in the media - I don't believe for one minute (and neither do you) that the these Power 5 conference recruits really want to spend their college careers chasing the Championship of Life trophy. And even when these comments create a fire storm of criticism by not only this board but by numerous National Sports Media Outlets from coast to coast, Butch Jones inexplicably doubles down on the asinine comments which ultimately makes him look even worse.

I hate when Butch says this stuff as much as anybody, but I am so tired of hearing everybody wishing for Butch to be fired. If he gets fired that means we had a terrible season, we will lose out on any chance of a good 2018 class, and we will be starting over from day 0 again. I do not want that to happen. I have my issues and concerns with Butch too, but I'm giving him a chance to show me he can grow and change. Everybody wishing him to do bad so he can be fired is hoping Tennessee will do bad too. I want him to succeed so Tennessee can succeed as well.

Well see we have a lot of stupid fans. Whenever the offense hit a big gain our fans cheered so loud that Dobbs would have to tell the crowd to shut up so he could call the next play. Well these stupid fans keep saying things like "Butch is a lot like Dooley" and "our 4th string should play as well as our 1st string". Butch has to use little words for them to understand what is going on. Funny part is they still don't understand.

Butch is a PR nightmare. He needs to shut up and stop trying to defend the criticism and spin everything into some corny positive cliche. He sounds like a goofy middle school PE teacher.:clap:

When someone is trying to put a spin (to defend the inexcusable losses to Vandy and SCjr) that we really should have been 10-2 with a little bit of luck, it's only fair to point out that honest analysis of our games is that we were more likely to go 6-6 than 10-2 (if luck is taken into account). That's all I was saying (and for the record I would have preferred to go 12-0 if that was possible).

i've refrained from commenting up to this point, because i think his track record for this kind of stuff speaks for itself.

that said, aside from the awkwardness and cheesiness of the commment, what was he supposed to say? he's not, nor can he or should he, come out and acknowledge this class isn't as good as previous ones. that would be way worse...

rather, i still think he's suffering from a total lack of leadership over there. there should have been a conversation about the press conference. there's no way you go in to that setting not expecting that question to be asked, and there should have been some prep work in how to handle it and answer w/out coming off like he did, and at the same time still being positive about the recruits we do have coming in.

i've said it many times, he just doesn't do himself any favors with stuff like this, and while his intent is usually always in the right place, the reputation has already been cemented so the message continues to miss the mark, given the audience.

intent and context just don't matter. there's nothing wrong with the comment, as a stand alone event. just combined with this track record, it's just embarrassing that he hasn't figured this out, nor does he seem to be concerned with perception, or he's simply not aware.

either way.

all that said, win a game or two that you're not supposed to next year, and don't lose to who you're supposed to beat, and it'll just be a funny memory.

still, i'd prefer not to be bombarded by buddies with tweets and links to the next "great thing" our coach said in front of the media.

only thing to add, it really doesn't matter what the media or fans think of the comment. as long as the players buy in, and they don't start thinking like some of us do, then it really doesn't matter.
the perception it leaves outside Knoxville doesn't matter either, if they start winning again, and the results speak for themselves....that'll sell more to future recruits than anything else.

see a few guys walk across the draft stage, get their name called, and win some big games next year....with the staff we have now, and could potentially have.....it's not all over.

from a player standpoint, having confidence in them, and saying so, is not a bad thing.

and lastly, what are people talking about? Butch Jones, not the class or the players. so if you're looking for a positive, i would say it's that he's at least removed all the attention from the players and taken it all on his shoulders. good or bad, up to you.

When the pessimists start bashing Tom Herman for saying it only reworded they might get the credibility they're seeking. Until then it's just an anti-Butch agenda. You could start a thread about the weather and some way, some how volfaninbama,countvocula, sjt118, mwavolfan and others would find a way to blame it on Butch. Just saying.

he did beat FL last year and has won 2 in a row against GA. if you're going to criticize which is fine w/me, at least do it for the right reasons.

You should look at the context of "when" butch says these stupid things. The champions of life comment, was made when asked about how the loss to USCe knocked UT out of going to the SECCG. That was his response, to imply that missing out on the SECCG isn't important because of how awesome these kids are at life. There's no defending that response in the context it was given, and I don't care who else uses that phrase, they don't use it as a platitude when failing to meet their own expectations of a division title.

The same goes for the 5 star heart comment. Butch felt existential criticism from fans in pundits in the quality of players it 2017 recruiting class, and his response wasn't to say that UT recruited to build depth and to get athletes to fit the system, but rather, that he cared more about getting 3* players with 5* hearts. That's how Butch responds to any question or his coaching choices and abilities, and it's why he becomes a laughing stock when he does it.

"High character" in this case sounds a lot like describing a blind date by saying she has a "great personality". Obviously... there are pretty girls with great personalities... but....

That was more a general comment about those who seem to never find the lowest rung to set the bar for Jones. This class is a relatively minor thing compared to some of the losses and other shortcomings.



Yet this board is full of people trying to excuse those losses or divert blame from Jones. That's my overall point.

In my latter years, the character of the team has become more important. It seams CBJ is targeting players that are high character 1st.

He went with looking for talent the first few years and did well.

All his coach speak is what he is telling the players too. Listen to what the players say when they interview, many times it's the exact words or at least the same idea.

CBJ has always said that the teams expectations are much greater than any expectations from other. Dobbs at the O&W game talked about going back to Tampa.

As for excusing or diverting blam, what is there to excuse? He knows if he keeps losing to the Vandys and SCs he won't accomplish his own goals and will be let go. Diverting blame, if that is bringing up factors that impacted the outcome of games, then I'm as guilty as any for saying injuries, the mistake of a turnover and the study habits of a key player. CBJ neglected to correct these issues. The buck stops at CBJ.

At the NSD breakfast CBJ did not pump the brakes on expectations. He bragged about the class and talked about championships.

There are plenty of coaches that take every chance they get to run their own team down. We have all seen it, CBJ talks his team up, I would rather him do that than trying to use reverse psychology.

2017 should be the year that answers the question. Yes or no?

No way there is a group of people that laugh at and make fun of Butch, as much as the Tennessee Volunteer Football fans on this board. No Way. And why? Is it so any outsiders reading this message board won't think less of "us". I don't know, I don't even pretend to understand it.

It's an easy fix for you. Don't watch the pressers or read articles about Butch. That way you won't be subjected to them and making your life miserable. In the long run it doesn't matter what any of us says on here. But to push the pessimism just gets old. Say it once, if you feel the need, and then go on to other things.

I guess you could follow your own advise then when it comes to reading criticism of Butch, correct? That way you won't be subjected to reading it, and won't continue to be in a state of misery.

He is a PR nightmare because the Knoxville media are idiots! Other coaches for teams say similar things (... Herman at Houston ...) but you don't see the media around those schools running it into the ground and making something out of nothing.

Many in the Knoxville media have an agenda. There are NOT Tennessee fans, never have been. They thrive on chaos. They need for there to be a constant turnover among coaches, ADs. and such otherwise they have absolutely nothing to write about.

The majority of the fans are tired of this and most have learned to ignore the stupidity that is the Knoxville Media, Vol Twitter and other social medial outlets who thrive on negativity.

Those who spew this thinks it is working to prove some kind of point but it reality it is driving most away and uniting others more firmly behind this team which includes players and coaches.

It is bullying, pure and simple. Great lesson the media is teaching young kids in saying it is okay to bully someone. Because that is exactly what they are doing.
