I know this movie came out a few years back, but tonight was the first time I've watched it. I thought it was a wonderful movie. Tom Hanks is a great actor.

What is everyones thought on it?

That was a true story wasnt it? If I recall, he gained a bunch of weight and they took a year off so he could lose all of it and film most of the beach scenes. Good movie.

yea, I was watching it and he was pretty chucky, then they jump a year or two i think and you could tell a huge difference in his body.

I'm pretty positive it was purely fictional, but I agree, it was a great movie that didn't get a whole lot of recognition.

makes you glad he didn't get typecast by a movie like "Bachelor Party", it sure did wonders for Adrian Zmed's career.

I've never seen Castaway, but it's in the bargain DVD bin at WalMart now, so I'm going to have to pick it up.

A different kind of movie and a different star, but "Master and Commander, Far Side of the World" is a great film.

If that were a true story you probably wouldn't have to ask.

He really is a great actor. I wonder how difficult it would be to be on film as long as he was without speaking or or interacting with someone else.

not sure how Hanks is under appreciated, he's won the Oscar for best actor twice and a slew of other awards from the Golden Globe Awards to the Emmy's.

I think he's the best actor of this generation, but from mainstream America, he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Makes ya want to go to the dentist though doesn't it? I don't care who you are, that scene was PAINFUL to watch.

But for the fact that you have an excellent avatar, I would be boarding a plane to wherever you are to beat some sense into you. Saving Private Ryan is an incredible movie. Great story and acting and the special effects were top drawer.

In comparison, Cast Away is utter junk, up there with Smokey and the Bandit III, Meatballs II, etc. Now, that is no fault of Hanks. He did as good a job as anyone possibly could.

The problem with it as a movie is that it was by definition ONE GUY on a deserted island who was from time to time having a conversation with a volley ball. Hanks did what could be done with it, but the problem of ONE GUY (and therefore no dialogue or interaction) for about an hour and a half is mind numbing and was on screen, too.

The movie, to be blunt, was average at best.

Agree to disagree, then. I thought the movie was average when I first saw it...but it really grew on me. The fact that it is one man for most of the movie is unique. You cant hide anything with effects or music...it is what it is....I think it is very underrated.

(I like Smokey and the Bandit....part one...the others were garbaggio)

I actually thought the volleyball did a pretty good job in that film.

It was one of the most memorable performances that I've seen from a ball in a major motion picture.

I haven't seen the volleyball in anything recently, but I'd like to. Does anyone know if the volleyball has done any other films since Cast Away?

Rumor has it that the Volleyball and Hanks had a litte off screen thing going, too. Its how he managed to get all emotional when the ball floated off in the ocean when he built the raft.
