Casey Clausen: Overrated or Underrated?

Who was the only decent team at the time.
That's just not true. Georgia was good. Florida was good. Alabama had a good year or two in there. Lou Holtz was even reeling off a couple of good years at SC.

Where they absolutely hammered us at home 34-14.

There were at least 10 points that Bama got in there due to terrible, terrible calls. Actually, there was an awfully bad call that resulted in us turning the ball over in the red zone.

He was the toughest "road warrior" QB that Tennessee ever had under center. He willed Tennessee to a win against Arkansas in that 41-38 6OT victory despite a fractured collar bone. He was 3-1 against the Gators and I think he lost less than a handful of road games. He did have an uncanny knack for zeroing in on the double-covered receiver, however. He is underrated by far.

Are you saying that Clausen choked in big games?

You can't hate Will Overstreet for having Henderson and Haynesworth to benefit him. And not blame Casey Clausen for the teams under achieving after he lost the training wheels of Reggie Coleman, Stallworth, a Kelly Washington who gave a damn, Will Bartholomew, Travis Stephens etc.

As far as choking in big games, there is a good argument that says he didn't play his best when the competition was maxi.

Completely agree that he is the most underrated player in Vol history. He just had two tough acts to follow.

That argument sort of falls apart though when you look at wins like Florida '01, Michigan '01, Miami '03 etc.

Who has mentioned Will Overstreet?

Hard to play your best when Randy Sanders is running Jabari Davis and Cedric Houston up the gut every play in hopes of eclipsing ten yards rushing. In the games where we really leaned on Casey (for an extended period of play - not for fourth quarter miracles), he often came through.

He was pretty stellar at Miami in 2003 when he tossed in a 11/18 performance for 81 yards and no tochdowns. Against Florida in 2001 he threw 2 interceptions to counter his one touchdown pass. A one yarder off of a playaction fake to a wide open FB in the endzone.

In all seriousness, Michigan and Clemson were huge performances for him. Both of those he pushed passing for 400 yards.

That Miami defense had a few Pro-Bowlers on it. He did what was necessary to win.

I think the reason Casey gets such a bad rep is the times he was bad...he was baaaad. The Florida game in Neyland where he fumbled what felt like 10 times in a row & The Cotton Bowl vs. KSU are two of the worst games I remember.

But...he still was a good QB overall

But at least he didn't fumble a handoff into the endzone.

It was part Troy Flemming's fault, but he actually went one worse than fumbling into his own endzone. See UGA 2001 right before the half.

Weather had something to do with it. I know it was a factor for opps too. But that was a miserable game to watch.

Walked on to Chiefs camp and didnt make the cut. Still dont get that one, knowing
Chiefs needed a QB at the time. Thought he would make an NFL squad or at least a CFL team. And here he is coaching HS team. Who knew?
