I have to agree with LG.... Asking Pete Carroll about Lane Kiffin would be like asking Urban Meyer how he thinks Dan Mullen is doing at Mississippi State.... I like what was said no doubt, but unbiased? I think perhaps not....

I find it interesting that there are fewer out there that take the stance that Kiffin is not an X's and O's guy. Thinking back to all the interviews of former players and coaches that had been around him at other schools, it does seem that they had more problems with his "personality" than his actual knowledge of the game.

Crompton's success is the only empirical evidence I needed to confirm his coaching accumen.

It's also possible Crompton did some pigskin soul-searching and resolved he wasn't goin' out a goat. Is there a track record of quarterback coaching that would solidify any claim Kiffin provided Crompton's epiphony? He had a Road-to-Damascus turnaround, that much is for sure, but maybe some of the miracle came from within?

Kiffin modified the offense to better suit Crompton's abilities.

coaches are human too -- and Pete enjoyed talking about hanging out with his assistant coaches.

A lot of parts of conversations between reporters and coaches are never written, but there are many good exchanges...it's part of good communication.

But I understand why you might wonder :)

I did say "some" of the miracle. I think it was likely a combination, but I'm not prepared to hang my hat on Kiffin only because Crompton showed the improvement he did this year. A guy with Kiffin's mouth and maturity level has plenty more to prove, imo. I will go on record however as saying that I am eager to root for both he and the Vols in the coming years. :good!:

Thanks, Writer. Great read! Appreciate hearing some positives every now and again about the team and coaches. I thought the basketball game mention was interesting as well regardless of the juvenile bums' criticism, I doubt any of them could write anything of any value themselves other than their pithy and rude responses to your work. Those who can't criticize.

I recall reading some former USC coaches taking direct shots at Kiffins ability to coach. Something along the lines of "a ten your old trying to drive a Ferrari". I personally don't see that, but it's easy to look past it when he's currently driving a Chevy. The true test is to see if he underachieves after getting his own talent.

I wouldn't look to much into Crompton's turn around. Chaney's 'Dumbing' down the system for Crompdaddy does not equate to Kiffin being a QB coaching genius. Smart coaching move - yes. But not a tell-all of Kiff's overall coaching acumen.

Nowhere have you supported that portion of your column wherein you assert that Lane and Randy Sanders are in any way comparable, or have anything in common. It was a stupid remark, and is absolutely unsupportable. Just a totally ignorant comment.

I posted this on other forums...you haven't responded yet, and you probably won't because there is no commonality between Sanders and Lane.

Really. Seems to me a dumbed down offense would have gotten worse. Ours didn't, but don't let that get in your way. Disregard to accuracy difference late. Forget that our receivers improved overwhelmingly. Just use anecdotal drivel to make some random point.
