Carolina Panthers

Hey gang, I'm back! It was a long Lenten season this year. Giving up sports message boards was harder than I thought it would be.
I really like the Sam Mills touch on the new unis. I was also disappointed when I saw that the black helmets that leaked were just a fake. Those looked pretty solid to me.

I love the draft, and it's almost here. Based on what I'm hearing on Charlotte radio, and reading on different Panthers twitter feeds, I feel like we're going to be taking either Coples or Keuchly. I really like Keuchly, I just don't want to have to move Beason back out to the outside.
Clearly, the greatest situation would be if Claiborn could fall to us at 9.

He wasn't playing seriously and didn't focus on his throws. I'm not too worried about it, but he definitely still needs to continue working on his mechanics. He doesn't set his feet and it results in overthrows and inaccurate throws...

Sloppy play in exhibition results in sloppy play when the game counts. He's a good athlete with a good arm, but if he continues to act nonchalant, then he is going to regress. You say you're not worried about it, but watch how Peyton Manning in his games and see if he doesn't try to perfect his throws still.

He only played nonchalant in the Pro Bowl when almost every other player there was doing the exact same thing. He wasn't during his offseason work, preseason, or the regular season. Also, Peyton Manning isn't a rookie and threw more INTs and threw for less yards than Cam did when he was one.

He is training with Chris Weinke at IMG again this year working on his throwing mechanics and film study and he broke NFL records as a rookie. I fail to see how he could regress if he keeps working this way...

Based on the guys we've met with and held individual workouts for, I'd say there are five possible guys for us at pick #9. What are your thoughts on these five?

Coples (I think he has the most upside, but also has the biggest bust capability)
Floyd (could be a legit #2 WR one day, I just don't see it happening in year one)
Kuechly (very real possibility for us. I'd just rather address other needs first)
Cox (would fill a big need, just DTs rarely make an impact immediately)
Gilmore (fills our biggest need IMO, I just think there are better guys rated lower...like even Brandon Boykin from UGA. that guy is rated as like a 4th rounder)

Of these, I think I'd go with Coples. What say you?

Of the five listed I'd go with Coples too.
I wouldn't be surprised if they traded down though.

You think Floyd could only be a #2 receiver?

You all could probably trade back if they wanted Coples. Do you think he plays DE or DT?

Coples has such amazing upside that I think they've got to take him. The Giants have proven that you can never have enough pass rushers and JPP was a feast or famine pick for them and we all know how that ended...

Rivera and Hurney held another private meeting with Coples yesterday (Monday) in Chapel Hill. If this was a smokescreen, I don't think both guys would have gone.
He has huge question marks, and I like that they are seriously doing their homework.

Just saw a video about Kuechly that really sold me on the guy. I do think he was the safest pick. Maybe not the sexiest.

He measured bigger and ran faster at combine than Beason, Davis, or Anderson. 532 tackles in three seasons at BC. Hell of a LB crew in Carolina.

Panthro's Draft Analysis:

Kuechly – Safe pick because this guy is almost a can’t-miss selection. Led NCAA in solo tackles two years in a row. First time a player has ever done that. Also, BC had bad d-line, but still gave up the 3rd least rushing yards in the nation last year.
Silotolu – Watch youtube videos. This guy is nasty! I think he’s a day-one starter at LG.
Alexander – Appears to be stellar pass-rusher, but sub-par against the run. I like this pick up, despite having to trade up.
Adams – Instantly improves punt return game.
Norman – I’ve seen conflicting reviews. I know he was called the best defensive player in the East/West Shrine game. Apparently a “thug”.
Nortman – Was outstanding his senior year. Great pickup, considering we had no punter on the roster.
Campbell – Saw him rated as 8th overall safety. After two went in the first round, seems like a good 7th round pick for depth.

I like this draft. So many are ripping Hurney, but he made the team better with the picks we had. We got much better at special teams this offseason, and we got instant starters in our first two picks this weekend. People seem to forget about the safeties we signed in free agency, and the fact that Ron Edwards is on the team and back to 100%.

I agree with you, I liked the draft. I know we had needs are DL, but why reach when the talent may not be there this year. I think next years (2013) Rookie class is going to be deeper at the DT position so it would seem that the Panthers are building in pieces.

Just saw that they signed Tauren Poole as a free agent rookie as well.

Apparently Frank Alexander was originally got a second round grade, but there were questions about his health. Particularly his heart.
Because of these questions, he couldn't participate in many pre draft workouts.
Eventually, though, it was discovered that he had gotten a misdiagnosis and is actually healthy. That's why he fell to us in the early 4th. Seems we may have gotten a steal there.
