Carolina Panthers

Former Eagles WR Jason Avant and Falcons S Thomas DeCoud in for visits today. I'd be happy with either.

Signed DeCoud today, as well as TE Ed Dickson. Bargain bin shopping on guys with upside or that will fill a role. Obviously planning to address OT and impact WR in the draft.

Who are you guys wanting (realistically) on Thursday?
If Beckham and Zach Martin are gone, I'd like to go with Cooks. I just don't feel comfortable with Moses or Kouandjio at 28, though OT is the biggest need.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade back a few slots, depending on who is still available at 28. Maybe a team picking early in the second round would prefer picking Bridgewater late in the first in order to control him for 5 years. They could use extra picks in the first three rounds. Otherwise, defensive BPA is my call.

Defensive BPA? Really?
I'd go offensive BPA first. An offensive lineman or WR would be ideal. In the VN mock in the Pub, I got Cooks and Kouandjio in the first two. I can't imagine a much better scenario for this team.

I think there will be defensive players that are rated higher than any "need" position guys available at #28. Kouandijo is probably a safe bet as their pick at #28 as I don't think any of the higher rated WR or CB prospects will still be on the board. They could use another DE for depth/insurance for Hardy and Johnson, and you can't ever have enough quality DT in a 4-3 alignment. Gettleman has said they won't reach for prospects and will take the BPA, but IMO, Kouandijo could still be had early in the second round even though he may be first round talent. I'd really like to see them move back into the early second round and pick up another pick or two. The Panthers are a defense team and the Giants were defense minded when Gettleman was in New York.

Charles Godfrey renegotiated his contract earlier this week and will save the team $4 mil under the cap. I like the restructured salary and the savings and they know what they have with Godfrey, but I would have liked to see Lamarcus Joyner as a midround selection as a NB/CB/S and returner option.

I'd still like to see Carolina trade back from #28 unless by some unlikely circumstance they could draft Cooks/Beckham/Lee/Martin/Fuller/Verrett/Moses with that pick. If none of those guys are available at #28, and Carolina keeps the pick, I think they will go defensive BPA. The remaining OT/OL prospects they are considering should be available lower in the draft.

Two big rumors right now:
That we could trade back with Oakland to get another 2nd rounder, and probably a 4th and 6th.
Also hearing that we might take Joel Bitonio if we stay at 28.

I don't hate the pick. I do think there were better options available. I would have a trade back, but it does take two to tango.

I would have rather had Lee, Latimer, Matthews, or DeVante Adams, but this is the guy Gettleman likes so I'll get behind him.

I like him over Matthews, Latimer and Adams, but I wouldn't have minded us going for Lee. Kinda would have liked to see them trade up with Seattle and snag him and double dip WR, but I know that's not Gettleman's style.

Heard Greg Cosell on two radio shows raving about Benjamin this morning. I think he's got me coming around on this pick.
I hope Bitonio falls to us at 60 tonight.

I love our day two picks. Ealy is amazing value at 60, and Turner will start immediately.
I can't link it right now, but look up a piece Kris Budden did on Ealy. It will make you love this guy.

I don't know any of the guys we took today. I read that Gettleman thinks the CB we got will play nickle back right away.
Cannot believe we took another RB.

If convicted, he will save the Panthers a lot of money. Wish this would have happened before free agency, so we could have had some money for a tackle.

He'd save money, but no one the Panthers will get with that money is going to be better than Hardy.

Good thing they picked Ealy...
