Is anyone here an expert, or semi-expert in car maintenance and things? I have a question about something my car is doing, and I'm pretty clueless.

Alright, here in Flagstaff, we had a 6-8 inch snow, but the temps were terrible. We had a low of -11 last night, and the high hasn't been over 28 in 2-3 days.

Well, my 2000 Kia (it sucks) was fine until today. When I shift my automatic transmission, it doesn't engage into reverse (or any other gear). Is it possible my transmission fluid or the transmission is frozen. I started the car and let the engine warm up for 30 minutes, but still nothing. Is my transmission just shot now, or is this something I can fix myself?

Does it seem like it's catching gear in any way? My first reaction is that it's a problem with the linkage.

I doubt anything is frozen... If I remember correctly, the freezing point of transmission fluid is somewhere in the ballpark of -50F. If your tranny was frozen over, you would not be able to move the shift knob at all.

I'm not familiar with Kia transmissions, whether they are throttle valve, kickdown or what. But yeah, the linkage is my best guess. Fixing transmission innards is usually not a novice activity. Take it in.

You know how when you switch gears in an automatic, the car moves slightly when you engage? Well, the car moves every so slightly now, but nowhere near what it was before. I can tell something changes when I shift.

How much does it usually cost for a local place (I trust the guy I go to) to fix a linkage problem?

And thanks for the answers, you've always been the man.

Are you talking about taking it out of park? When you take it out of park in newer automatics, it disengages the parking brake. Unless you're on perfectly level surface, you will move a little bit.

I don't know how much it will cost... Never had tranny problems, but I haven't even been behind the wheel of a car for two years.

And no problem on the info.

VIA.. i'm shocked you got even one good response on this. the fact that you're trusting anyone one of us to help you with this baffles me.

fwiw, i agree w/ the hammer and duct tape idea it. if that doesn't work f it and step up to a real car... a Daewoo

let me tell you this. An automatic transmission has filters and screens. When these become clogged with debris and trash, it will feel like it is barely trying to pull but never gets any power. Similar to the feeling when a clutch goes out, that "hey I am trying to pull, but not too successful" Most oil change places offer "Transmission Service" which is what this is, cleaning the screens and filters and replacing the fluid. Now if that is indeed the problem I cannot explain the role the weather has played in this. Not much help I know but it is some added info.
