I think we know by now that our AD and boosters aren't going to pay big money for a hot coaching candidate. As usual we're looking for a bargain. And we know Currie has made a huge public mess of this search.

Still, that shouldn't mean we have to settle for the likes of Tee Martin (or even Mike Leach).

Here are some solid candidates, who are up and comers, but also proven winners. And, given that their current salaries are all in the 1 million dollar range, we could probably triple what they're making and still fit the bill of a typical Haslam blue light special.

Surely not all of these guys would pass up a chance to triple their income? Even with our lousy AD, I can't believe he couldn't get any of these guys.

Troy HC Neal Brown - upset LSU, has SEC coordinator experience, has turned around the Troy program

Boise State HC Bryan Harsin - Chris Petersen disciple, has won steadily at Boise State

Clemson DC Brent Venables - maybe the most successful coordinator out there, still pretty young, alot of big game coaching experience and experience recruiting this area

James Madison HC Mike Houston - yeah, I know he is listed elsewhere on this board, but no one seems to be talking about him. Great success. Not sure if it would translate to our level, but it worked for Jim Tressel. I'd rather try a guy who has won big as a small school HC than someone with an iffy record as a HC or a coordinator who hasn't accomplished much.

Washington DC Pete Kwiatkowski - Another Chris Petersen guy. I've always been impressed in how he has fielded alot of really good defenses where less heralded recruits have made big plays. Did you see them shut down Mike Leach's team Saturday? What about when they took it to Georgia in the 2011 opener?

Who did I miss (trying to limit this list to guys currently making under 2 million, because we know we aren't going to spend big)? I know Mike Norvell fits the criteria, but I'm guessing alot of better ADs are already on him.

It's over, give it up. The AD shot his wad at the wrong guy and embarrassed this University in a way unimaginable until now. We are in post meltdown protocol and will scramble to hire a caretaker until the trash can be purged from the booster and AD side.

The revolution must come before the right hire can be made.

Yeah, if I'm being honest all signs right now point to a Dooley level hire. I'm just trying to stay positive until then. Once that happens, I'll probably be done with the program for at least a few years.

Sadly until the current people in control are purged from the school completely it’s pointless to expect anything but what we got Sunday.
Sadly they see that as us shooting us load and now they can go get whoever and now we will have to accept it. Haslam bought the media to be on his side and if the fans lash out on the next candidate they will just make it sound like we don’t want anyone but Gruden.
We all know the reality, and that is all we want is a coach that can actually turn us around and back into a national contender and not another cheap hire that the admin will praise making crap bowl games. We want a coach that will see the music city bowl and actually talk about turning it down because the season was a disappointment. We don’t want another haslam yes man that would March out and make the music city bowl sound like we accomplished something that season.

Jason Candle, head coach at Toledo. Played at Mount Union and later coached there, heavily influenced by Larry Kehres, was named offensive coordinator at Toledo at age 32 after a couple years as receivers coach. Turned the Rockets into an upper-echelon offensive team during his tenure, and has them playing for the MAC championship.

Troy Calhoun, head coach at Air Force. As long as he's been around, it's hard to believe he's only 51 years old. Has extensive offensive knowledge with both NFL and college styles, and has kept the Falcons competitive year in and year out despite changing DoD regulations constantly shifting what talent he's able to attract.

I was fairly calm yesterday. I will go absolutely ballistic if Petrino comes in.

Personally, I'm on the Lane-Train, but the name I have heard the most today was Kevin Steele. Steele's resume sounds good as he has coached on teams with several prominent coaches. If not Kiffin, I would pull the trigger on Steele, and [for what it's worth] he is a Tennessee guy.

As a head coach, Steele went 9-36, that's losing 80% of the time. He is a Tennessee guy, true with playing/coaching experience under Majors.

What if I told you that there's a guy sitting 530 miles northeast of Knoxville that is 229-72 as a head coach, is an eight-time Coach of the Year, is in the College Football Hall of Fame.....and has a BCS National Championship on his resume??

kevin steele would be a good hire. the name I've heard recently is Matt Canada, OC at LSU. no HC experience but at this point...what the hell? Still would give Gruden a shout especially if we can get Blackburn in as AD. I also think John Harbaugh, Ravens would be a great choice.

That couldn't win with a team that Muschamp is winning with? That quit because he knew his days were over? No thanks. And knowing Steve, he'd take the job to kill us off

What if I told you there was a guy 500 miles north of Knoxville that is 332-24-3 (230-8-3 in-conference) as a head coach, is a nine-time Coach of the Year, is in the College Football Hall of Fame...and has 11 national championships along with 23 conference championships?
