Not seen it discussed but key to beating WV will be stopping their running game I feel. It's been a weakness for us for years and we'll know by week 1 if we've improved. WV doesn't have a rb that scares anyone and may be their weakest group on offense. Make em one dimensional, cause turnovers, win game. Pretty simple really!

The key to beating WV is to stop their pass and run the ball on them. If we can take away their pass we dictate what they do and force them to play to a weakness.
We're not going to stop their passing game, very unlikely. They'll throw for 275+ If they run for <100 I think we win.

Kind of depends. Phillips said something in a recent interview about stopping the run so they can get a chance to rush the passer. Sounds like WVU has been on Pruitt's mind if not his lips.

The formula for stopping their passing game actually starts with limiting them in the run game. You want down and distance that allows you to bring pressure on Grier. Grier gets reckless with the ball when he gets pressure. He'll throw it up for grabs.

The unfortunate thing about them losing Grier in the Texas game and before playing OU is that those two teams had the athletes to really give WVU's receivers trouble. Would have been nice to see him against another team with legitimate talent.

The best comparison opponent to UT is still Oklahoma State. They were able to play man a good bit. They disguised coverages and changed right before the snap to cause Grier to hesitate. They held WVU to their lowest yardage of any game Grier played in and completed. They pressured Grier often and got him to make mistakes. Grier completed under 50% and actually inflated his yardage by hitting a couple of long ones late when the game was out of reach. But OSU took the run away and put WVU in unfavorable down and distance while the game was still competitive. WVU finished with just 62 yards on 30 carries.

Why not, we were great at stopping the run in 2001 and that should carry over, shouldnt it?

If we hold them to 62 rushing yards we win big I would think! If we can't control their run game we'll need a turnover or 2 to win.

The good news is their best RB by far graduated. None of their backs including Crawford would have started for any SEC team. Unless McKoy improved or they found someone, their run game will take a step back. Their third guy last year, Pettaway, is a scout team back in the SEC.

I see this as an offensive game. The team with the ball last could win it. Turnovers will be important too. UT will need to create several to win.

Once again another post that makes you look dumb. Most wvu fans wanted McKoy to start over Crawford, McKoy is a all around better RB. We have 4 RBs that your going to see. McKoy would start at most P5 schools. I think pettaway is trash, but rs freshman Sinkfield and true fresh Leddie Brown are future stars. McKoy Sinkfield and Brown have more talent then any of you're 3 Rbs.

IMHO None of those have more talent than our first 5 backs. We have a graduate transfer from Mich St that has more talent. Were any of them even 4 star recruits?

I doubt we can stop their offense expect they won't be able to run a lot and doubt they will want to try. They will air it out on us so to win we have to score expect it may take putting up 40 to win.

The answer to your question is no. All 4 of the WVU running backs were 3 star. Me thinks he is talking while wearing yellow and blue tinted sunglasses.

According to CJP, WVU is a good run team because they are committed to the run. They run first

thanks for your unsolicited participation. Once again, you prove that recruiting rankings mean nothing once these guys get to your mountain top. Of course your three RB are better than ours. And it will be proven without doubt starting at 3:30 next Saturday.

Most fans? Most fans don't know scat. McKoy is a nice back but he would NOT start at most P5 schools.

This made me laugh lol. How have you not seen us discuss that we need to stop the run to win the game? Thats like... the thing we've been worst at for 3 years.

their run game isn't a strength until they've backed the defense up with the passing game.

i'll put it this way, if it gets to the point where their run game is REALLY effective, it's probably too late for us at that point. their run game doesn't scare me in and of itself. i think if we had our preference, we'd like to be able to play as close to the LOS as possible, and if we have any success against their WR's by jamming them and taking them off spots, or getting pressure on grier, then the longer we can stay up front.

That sort of negates the concept from the WVU homer who posts here about having "one of the best OLs in the country" does it not?

Do any of those guys have any eligibility left?

That's a pretty bold statement. Two of those are mid level 3* freshmen who have never played a down of college football. You're gonna say they're more talented than our 4* returning starter or our 4* grad transfer? I guess we'll see if they can put their money where your mouth is. popcorn.gif
