Can we lose the "K"

Everywhere in this state, if you say UT, everyone knows it is the Knoxville campus that you are talking about. The extra letter should only be necessary on internal UT documentation and to differentiate one of the "other" schools.

If you've ever been in Chattanooga, and you say "UT", most people immediately think of UTC. I believe in towns where there's another campus, the "K" is completely necessary.

Not true, many chattanoogans think UTK when they hear UT! GO VOLS!

As a longtime Vols fan is there any reason for posters to to refer to the town?People from TN know there is a Martin and Chatanooga...Not to belittle those schools but I am pretty sure Texas is the UT of that state.Last I checked we are in a battle for the UT..It's the orange baby!

Texas is frequently referred to as UT-Austin.

It's an academic and administrative thing, so as to be more fair to the smaller satellite universities. At least, that's how I take it.

Here we go.
Drop the K.
Add a N.
Dual purpose.
UTN = University of Tennessee as in U-GA, U-VA.
UTN = University of Tennessee Noxville, for those "hooked on phonics".

I grew up there and go back frequently; your statement is far removed from the truth in my experience. I'd be glad to remove all doubt by letting UTC go back to being UC. While we're at it, can we cut Martin as well?

I wouldn't have to say this if it weren't from the Board of Distrustees and system president Jan Slimeck trying to dismantle the Knoxville campus as the flagship.

I live in West Tennessee. Most folks around here just say Martin when referring to the school.

"And if it weren't for the Volunteers from Tennessee, they'd be the University of Mexico".

Epic!!! :clapping:

Nobody uses their personal time here,
everyone needs to go back to work and
use company time and get paid.

As a UTC alum and 40+ yr citizen of the Chattanooga metro area, I can think of nothing more foreign than that statement. It's simply untrue. Dump the K.

Officially the university did away with it about 5 years ago, while I was in school. People just still use it.

I graduated with my undergrad in 2003 and they had made the change to "officially" stop using the K sometime during my 4 years there. Our email addresses were changed from @utk.edu to @tennessee.edu. I'm back in grad school now and even though everyone gets an @utk.edu email address the same prefix @tennessee.edu works. It was a valiant effort but they didn't push it hard enough

As a Chattanoogan who goes to UT, if you tell someone here that you go to UT, 99% of them would understand you mean the Knoxville campus, even though those same people often include the K when they talk about UT. I have never heard anyone here refer to UTC as UT.

I have seen some pointless topics on here in the past,

and this is definitely one of them.

This is complete nonsense. They've never made any official effort at all to move away from "UTK." The main UT Knoxville URL is still "utk.edu." ("Tennessee.edu" takes you to a generic front end for the entire system.) There's stuff on there right now about "Give to UTK." UTK is everywhere on official campus communications.

The K will be necessary as long as those losers in Chattanooga and Martin sponge off us, forcing us to dilute our resources across the entire state and dragging down what's supposed to be the state's flagship university. If they ever merge the state's two university systems and force Chattanooga and Martin to compete on their own merits like ETSU and MTSU -- which is never likely to happen -- THEN we can drop the K. Until then we need it to differentiate ourselves from the leeches at the lesser campuses.
