Can we have one thread a day that doesn't degenerate to firing/hiring coaches? There's the whole off season for that and it's already been pretty much beat to death.

For instance, is there anyone who can suggest a course of action that Shoop and the defensive coaches can take to help stop the runs up the middle? Line stunts? Run blitzes? Wide gaps by the DL? Narrow gaps by the DL? What about the loss of containment? Do the DE's need to stay home rather than concentrate on penetration? Bring up safeties?

Now I understand that Shoop has forgotten more about football than all of us combined, and I don't mean for this to be critical of the guy, but it's Thanksgiving Eve and I'd like to escape the commotion downstairs and talk some football. Anybody interested?

I'm not sure if it can be remedied by this Saturday. But I do know if it's not, we're absolutely screwed.

I guess he can't stack the box against the run because he can't trust the secondary. I didn't get to watch the game, at a wedding, but heard Swain talking about the D being in Cover 2. Our D is just scary at this point. But I like our odds in a shoot out with Vandy.

I was thinking today...is there enough practice time between season end and the bowl game to teach someone to play DT better? Our run defense has to improve or we will not win against a decent team.

Shoop is handicapped right now, with the loss three interior lineman.

He's not been able to get footing all year.

He's done all he can for this year. To many injuries.

All the QB has to do is throw it up and its almost a guaranteed PI -- these DBs are always holding the jersey right in front of a ref --- why Martinez needs to be dismissed after the season

At this point I might go for a sellout to stop the run. The Vandy QB (Shurmur) is hardly a world beater (56% completion, 6.22 YPA, 7 TDs/6 INts). Put eight in the box, the DBs in man to man and roll the dice.

The down side is they could roll up a lot of points in a hurry if Shurmur is hot.

I have to think (maybe hope is a better word) that in a month's time a good DE can become a passable DT. Obviously that would take some changes in schemes. Can't line up a 260 lb DE against a 340 lb OG and expect him to go head to head every play. Unfortunately I don't have a clue how to do it.....

Please, there are plenty of other threads to fire coaches. Can we keep that out of this one?

Agreed, but as you mentioned we are out sized. Although Kongbo is big enough and Phillips has put on a lot of weight. You would think though that given their speed (at least Phillips) he could shoot the gap and disrupt plays in the backfield, but we really haven't seen that yet.

I hear you but I don't completely agree. I think what they are doing is trying to simply slow down the other offense while Dobbs and company out score them. That may well be the best strategy given our offense productivity lately. But if we went into a game with a limited offense I think we'd see some other options.

There you go! That sort of thing seems to occasionally work for other teams, but for some reason not for our boys thus far. Are they trying to just limit the bleeding?

And let Shoop be able to choose his staff. Maybe that is another reason why the defense is terrible right now.

Shoop does not have his own people that know his defense or at least familiar with it

Sorry guys, I'm slow. I should have started the thread along the lines of "what would you do this week if you were Shoop?" And firing coaches has to wait until the off season...

you can't coach size for a DT,David Ligon said Sunday that he loved to go up against DTs that were under 300lbs,he really seemed to like that idea :)

Agree. Do you think that's the best option? It may limit the big (huge) plays and keep our offense within reach.

Since run defense is our weakness, I would like to see us sell out to stop it. I think our secondary is definitely better than the front 7 at this point.

Maybe we could run a gap 8. That would definitely stop the run :)

It is interesting to me that no one is scared of Vandy this year... They actually are a tough win with how solid their D is. That being said I say Tn wins 24-13

But aren't there some smallish DTs that survive(d) on speed and penetration? I can't recall any names at this point, but it seems like there were some such Vols.

We can sell out to stop the run, and I know vandy qb isn't that great, but the bad part is any qb (even a high schools qb) can throw up a 50/50 deep ball and probably complete it since our corners seem to get burned or PI on every SINGLE deep ball thrown this year. Cam even got burned in a couple last week, just fortunate the WR dropped the ball or Lock overthrew it.

So I say keep playing 2 deep, give up the chunk runs, bend don't break, hold up in the red zone and we should be fine. Our offense will pick up the slack
