Can we agree about Mississippi State (merged)

Where's all the doolaiders? Hmmm, suspiciously missing from this thread.... you all know who you are. What's your pre miss st. game take on this?

I support Dooley because he is our coach right now, so if that qualifies me as a Doolaider then ok. I think he has brought the team to a level about on par with where Miss St is right now. so this is a game that will be competitive but we have a realistic expectation of winning.
Right now, against the top 10 type schools, which we typically have to play 3 or 4 times a year, we are closer but still out talented and very possibly out coached too. I think Dooley will still continue to close the talent gap if given enough time. Whether he continues to improve his own skill set at the same time is still up in the air. I think Hart said what he was looking for was consistent improvement and Dooley has delivered that so far. We are not where any of us want to be ultimately but as long as we win the games we should and continue to be competitive in the games against obviously better teams, he will be here next year, so people like you can continue to tear their hair out.

Losing to Miss St would be devasting for the confidence of the team and the fanbase. We would be 3-3 and 0-3 in the SEC. The Fire Dooley crowd would most certaintly be louder. I'm afraid if we lose this one, the wheels would come off as we would have Alabama at home which is almost surely a loss and then going to a highly ranked South Carolina team in their house. This is absolutley a must win game for Dooley. No excuses.

MSU is a must-win. Anyone that tells you otherwise has an IQ of 7.

It may have already been posted but their schedule before us has been

Jackson St
Auburn
Troy
South Alabama
Kentucky

Talk about an easy road to the top 25.

We need to win, and the coaches need to use the win over a "top 25" team as motivation.

The Bulldog's schedule thus far:

Jackson St (1-3)
Auburn (1-3)
Troy (3-2)
South Alabama (1-4)
Kentucky (1-5*) - assuming MSU beats them this Saturday

Does that sound like the #20 ranked team in the nation? Or are they there by default of a creampuff schedule?

In a nutshell, hell yeah the MSU game is a must win. I don't see how anyone can spin it otherwise. Is this seriously up for discussion. Are we really in year three and having a debate about the merits of beating perennial SECW bottom dweller MSU? We havent' lost to them in almost 20yrs. Hello people!!! Stop lowering the bar!

We need to start calling a spade a spade. This is a must win game.

Good post... UT's hilarious how ppl think a season is so dependent on one game..

It's not one game, but the quality of a season comes down to not much more than that. There are 12 games on the schedule. This year, five of them should be so easy that they barely count. There are four good teams on the schedule [1], which apparently don't count because it's unrealistic to compete with them yet. Fine. So that leaves three games which which we can adequately judge progress. A decent MSU team on the road is one of them. If we're making real progress, we should win the damn game. No excuses.

[1] If you include UF, which at this point is still being generous

I'M done with moral victories, but the bullies are no push overs.

Exactly, especially considering our history against spread teams. We could very easily get blown off the field. They are a physical team and that makes me more nervous than anything about that game. Plus it being a late game on the road has disaster written all over it. Hope I'm wrong.

both teams recruit same caliber of players = evenly matched so it will come down to coaching

I personally am a supporter of Dooley, but that being said I have to agree that this is a must win game for the Vols...That being said I personally believe it will be a win, and even though I dont agree with "moral victories", I do think that the Georgia game showed this team what can happen when you play hard for 60 mins, and I am confident that its gonna carry over to next Saturday

I think if we win it will be a quality win. They will likely be undefeated and are already ranked. Chances are a 5-0 sec team will be ranked pretty high. They will have a sold out loud crowd.

I know they are typically not a great team and I know the teams they have beaten are not great teams but fact is beating an undefeated ranked SEC team is a good win no matter how you slice it.

Now, lets hope we win.

Vegas has Miss State as a seven point favorite over the Vols. So how can you possibly expect Derek to win that game?

Wait until we are favored over someone, then try to play this card.

This is stupid You have to start winning to be favored. The only teams the Vols are favored over are cupcakes.

For some one who goes by "UT's#1Fan" You sure dont sound like one. Bye the way, we will win this one and many more this season. DD will be back next season and we will be even better.

They have to win this one to be 4-4 going into November. And Dools supporters will be singing his praises. They will say, " Yes, they lost to the top 4 teams they played, but they got that signature win against Missy State. They lost a close one to UGA. They're getting better."

This stuff is so far beneath what a Vol fan should be thinking and demanding out of this program.

Kentucky, 2011.

I hate it but Miss St. is a must win road game. For the Vols to reach 9 wins this is one we have to get plus Vandy.

USC East will also be winnable after there next 3 games if they survive them (GA, LSU, Florida then us).

I would take a 6-1 finish with great bowl game!

You must think Mississippi State is the measuring stick for Tennessee. I think they're significantly below that level.

All I know is they are top 20 and undefeated and we are not. So if we take the position a loss is devastating but a victory has little value then it becomes heads I win tales you lose scenario.

I have an idea. Let's all underestimate our opponent every week. That way, if we win it's no big deal and if we lose it's horrible. Setting unrealistically high expectations is an absolute recipe for success in any endeavor.

Ok... Well maybe it isn't good for our happiness or the team's success, but it's great for making sure you can say you were right about Dooley. That's probably more important anyway.

Are you saying that we're underestimating MSU? Their last four recruiting classes were ranked (going backwards) 30th, 44th, 38th, and 25th. (Ours were 17th, 13th, 9th, and 10th.) They went 2-6 in conference last year. The best MSU is going to be this year is okay.

Beating even an okay team would be progress. But there's no "underestimating" going on. This is a game which Tennessee should win. Full stop.

I have an idea. Let's all settle for loss after loss after loss until we're numb and senseless to losing and what good football looks.

Yes. The OP and others are underestimating MSU just like they underestimated UF and UGA. At best, this is a toss-up. Treating it as a sure win is delusional.
