I read that Monte wouldn't sign off on guys who had no previous experience running the Tampa 2 after Tampa Bay hired some guys off Southern Cal's staff a few years ago.

So far though, have we hired anyone who has worked with the system?

It seems like we are going to run a more basic defense in 2009 with a transition to more complex schemes in 2010.

Anyone got any ideas on defensive philosophy for next fall?

Im not sure if it will be the exact same Tampa 2 he ran in the NFL, I am sure there will be some fine tuning and adjustments for the college game! Especially this first season until Monte gets in the type of kids who fit the system

I'm pretty sure Monte's probably got this covered. I doubt he would sign off on the hiring of someone he didn't think could run his system.

no, its impossible for them to learn

that's not the point, genius. the point is he was quoted saying he wanted experience, so he didn't have to start from stage one. i'm asking if anyone is familiar with the defenses these guys have coached in.

I would imagine that coaching NFL defenses is on a whole different level than college defenses. Plus, I'm sure CLK had Monte sign off on all the hires beforehand. He probably helped with the interviewing.

Garza was a Tampa 2 coach in his previous job. Coach O and Monte have similar thoughts on what they like a DL to look like. Thompson is the only 1 that will need to adjust.

Kiffin has a reputation of being creative and with as many varied offenses as he is going to see in the SEC, he is going to have to be. All of the Tampa 2 talk is extremely overblown IMO. Monte Kiffin was hired for his ability to coach, not because of any specific scheme. Thankfully he has a bunch of guys that will bring fresh ideas to the table and firsthand knowledge of how to defend specific SEC offenses. The collective knowledge of all of these coaches will be invaluable in scheming to stop the Bama and Floridas of the world. I have no doubt the Tampa 2 will be a package that will be employed, but it is not an overly complicated scheme and doesn't really require getting assistants that have coached in that particular scheme previously. Just about every coach in the game has been around some form of the cover 2 before. It's not as important as fitting spread guys in a spread system ect.

I was going to say the same thing, you said it better, I'll leave it alone.

Thank you for understanding what I was asking and for your familiarity with their history.

Sabanocchio, you've got some good points and I hope Monte is leaving things open for discussion/evaluation. I hope there's no "wow" factor which prevents them from making suggestions to the master.

I understood that Monte signed off on the hires and that these guys were bright & talanted who could make adjustments, I just wanted to know if they'd be on step 1, 2, 3, et cetera. I wanted to know how much ground needed to be covered before everyone was on the same page.

Running a 3-4, as apposed to a 4-3, I could see the worry.

Don't think there is to much to it.

Monte is a very smart coach he knows what it will take. Coach O will have the front guys playing very nasty, THompson will have the Linebackers ready to play and I think Monte will build the secondary around the Legend "Berry" and make sure that on most key downs or series that Berry is in the middle of everything.

R. Barber said that he owes all of his success in the NFL to Monte. He said that Monte has a knack for having him in the right place at the right time to make a big play. Expect to see that next year with Berry!
