philosophy? I admit I never liked Dooley, his sarcasm, but most importantly his inability to recruit top talent. Was it the geographical philosophy, the lack of forming and maintaining relationships, his ignoring top recruits, his lack of knowledge about the recruit when he finally did talk to him or his love for finding the perceived diamond in the rough making him look smarter than anyone else? Also with his budget did he own a stop watch? Did he only recruit people who came to his camp. For a man who was suppose to be so organized as the 30 or more coaches quoted in the newspaper this was a misnomer, he was anything but the case. Any coach worth anything much less 2 million a year should understand recruiting is 75% of college football success. Before some of you tslk sbout saving Kiffin's class most of the elite players were already EE.

Two big issues were that he required a lot of guys to come to camp before offering. I understand the logic, but I think it hurt him in a lot of ways. Last, he put way too much emphasis on "character." Look, I don't want insubordinate kids running around UT, but sometimes, you are going to have to deal with a kid's baggage. It happens. Sometimes, some of the best players out there have baggage.

His track record alone should have told the powers that be at UT he was not going to be able to recruit well.

Uhhh....Coach Dooley is not the coach of the Vols any longer; why explain his recruiting? I guess I don't see the need, nor relevance. Is this just a temporary escape from the reality which is "The Vol Nation" during it's finest times....?

Why ask now? He gone, time to move on.

He recruited bamboo, it takes several years of watering before it suddenly matures. The problem with this logic as it applies to recruiting is, college players are only there for 3, 4 and sometimes 5 years therefore they are still in the watering stage when they graduate.

Inability to recruit top talent?

Justin Hunter
Darrick Rodgers
Cordarrelle Patterson
A.J. Johnson
Malik Jackson

Do I need to continue? Regardless of the recent reports, he still was able to recruit top talent.

yeah, you do.

5 guys in 3 years. 3 play the same position.

the fact that you consider aj johnson to be "top talent" after watching him play tells me how bad it is in knoxville

Agree with the first part but you lost me after that. AJ is solid.

It depends on how you define top talent....do you mean players who have actually shown it on the field or do you mean highly rated guys that were offered and pursued by all of the major programs (which IMO is more to the point of this thread)...

If it's the latter then I would give you this list:

D. Rogers
Hunter
Brown
Stone
Fulton
Clark
Loften
Jackson
Arnett
Moore
Richardson
Clear
Johnson
Maggitt
Couch
Jackson
Bullard
Lane
Kerbyson
Dallas
Patterson
McCullers
McNeil
Howard
O'Brien
Phillips
Peterman
Bowles

I was fine with Dooley's recruiting...it clearly wasn't on the level of Bama or UF but there are some extremely good players on that list...Dooley was hurt by several of those players not qualifying, leaving or getting kcicked off....but Dooley served a purpose...barring severe attrition (which isn't likely) and and complete bomb of a class (which also isnt likely with the right hire) our current roster is set up for our next coach to win with...and he won't have to worry about rebuilding it the very next year either because of the quality depth built by Dooley...those are two luxuries Dooley was not afforded

He lost me when he said "Bama drafts, we get what is left." I don't want the UT HFC to think like that. I want a guy who says, we find them first and let Bama get our left overs.

I agree to an extent. Curt Maggitt is the only LB we've got that could play for Florida right now. Bostic and Mike Taylor are much better MLBs than AJ right now.

Dooley only recruited offense well but not the RB position.

He somewhat rebuilt the D-line but it's no where near elite.

The secondary................... I don't know what to say there. Passing up on guys like Trae Elston and a few others while really sticking your faith in multiple juco guys.....:ermm:

The LB recruiting is the worst by far to me and reminds me of the situation that Urban Meyer walked into somewhat at Florida. I remember Urbie saying we don't have enough SEC caliber LBs. So he went out and signed 6. Our former coach goes out looking for 3 a year. Got to be kidding me right.

sorry but Maggitt could not play for Florida

but he's got 2 more years to let his nuts drop so we'll see but as of right now he'd be on the sideline with a towel around his neck cheering like hell
