OK, here goes. Would a small stypend (sp?) stop some of these kids from making these stupid decisions? I have been in favor of this for some time now. Look at all the money they help bring in to the University. None of these problems involve huge amounts of money. What's everyone's opinion here? I'm for it, to help with some of the peer pressure that goes on around campus. I know it's a decision thing, but these are kids after all.

they already get a free education, plus 'gifts'.

Maybe they should give all us students a little something so we won't go out and commit a crime. These athletes DO get a free ride to the University. That has so much value, but these guys have no intelligence to realize this. They need to have the maturity to NOT make these decisions for their own sake.

Agreed, and I knew this would be one of the first things brought up. But, it won't buy you a brown polo, or something at a convenience store.

And how much money do you bring into the school?

I've not thought about the issue in quite some time. Some of these players have absolutely NOTHING. Their parents are poor. They aren't allowed to work while on scholarship. They get free room and board, some athletic clothing, and of course the education. What about just a little spending money? I think one of the reasons the NCAA won't give serious consideration to stipends or something similar is because it would be too difficult to monitor, poorer schools would potentially be put at a disadvantage, etc.

The idea of stipends (thanks Wiscvol) is not new. Sports casters have been talking about it for years now. If it wasn't for football, some of these kids would not have the opportunity to go to college. Everyone so far has had some good points. Volfromnashville, seems to be a current student and I understand his view about paying the players. They sometimes already receive preferential treatment. I just hate to see these guys ruining what looks to be promissing careers over not being able to buy a shirt, or a ball cap. And Wiscvol is right.....some of these kids come from a very poor family and they can't afford to buy things for their kids like some families do. It's a tough call.

The University of Tennessee has one-twelfth of a $1.5 billion dollar contract with ESPN for football. The players get nothing. Grad students can receive a fellowship for putting in far less time outside of class than football players do, but the players who bring in tens of millions of dollars don't even get pocket money. It's ridiculous.

UT can sell a hundred thousand #14 Eric Berry jerseys, but Berry himself doesn't see a dime. That's criminal.

Reggie White was quite honest about his poverty and his need for clothes beyond warm up suits when he was at UT. I recall Mike Gundy (or Cale?) talking about Stipends a long, long time ago. He talked about players getting off the plane in Boulder late in the season without coats. (If I'm recalling his comments correctly)

Enough with the Tuition, Room, Food, and other expenses. Total that for 4 years, and it is a good amount. You don't have to be an athlete to bring money to the university. Sure, it isn't millions, but it is plenty.

Problems to be addressed:

What is the cap?

Who gets what amount? Does Berry bringing in the big money get as much as the walk on redshirt fresh?

Where does the money come from?

What do you tell the athletes involved in the many sports other than football?

If you pay those athletes as well (only fair b/c they're all putting in a lot of time), again where does the money come from?

How do you keep the amount paid to players from becoming a recruiting tool?

Also, someone commented about the NCAA not letting athletes work while on scholarship. Maybe during season/school year, but I'm pretty sure athletes may take summer jobs and earn a pay equal to tuition.

You don't even pay for yourself, which is why the university has to take money from the state. Football players generate actual income.

When I was an undergrad, I had a full academic scholarship that covered tuition, room and board, and left me with a few hundred extra a month for pocket money. There's absolutely no reason why football players shouldn't be able to get the same thing.

Although I would never be in favor of paying players to keep them out of trouble (because if $20 keeps them out of trouble, the $40 could get them in trouble) yet I think that many of these students need a small amount of spending cash... and I know there are a lot of issues to be considered, but everyone deserves to feel as if they are valuable members of society and being able to purchase a cola or whatever when you want to helps..... Just saying

Volfanfromnashville........I wasn't trying to say that you didn't make any contribution to the University. In reading some of the post on here from other students, I realize money is scarce, and tuition is very high. I'm just saying that it's much like an employee with a company bringing in money.

Yeah because money helped Leonard Little, Dwayne Goodrich, Travis Henry, Plaxico Burress....you get the point.

I will always side with Colin Cowherd's thoughts about money. More money only makes you more of what you are.

Nutshell, stupid is going to be stupid no matter how much money you have or don't have.

I have always felt like the players should get some type of stipend, especially after talking to a local kid that played 4 years at UT. He did not come from a wealthy or even moderate family. Some of the players were able to go to movies, bowling, even trips to the Kentucky Derby! They were able to buy clothes, dinner at Hooter's, whatever, then you have these kids, some hundreds of miles from home, with no spending money or anything. I imagine being a young person that is tough sometimes. Im in no way condoning the illegal actions of a few, and a stipend might not make a difference but there are good kids that are squared up and doing what they are supposed to be doing that have a very difficult time. Sure a "free" education is nice, though any player will tell you its not "free". My two cents.
