Can O-line problems be fixed?

The Vols OLine was on social media as being in the shadows of Dobbs, Hurd and other more visible stars.

With the performance that the Vols Oline demonstrated against Appalachian State, how much longer they are able to remain in the shadows, is your guess?

EVERY Commentator, Column, Blog, etc. has brought the boys OUT "of the Shadow"

We only have one new member to the Oline. And to be honest, it was the interior, not the Tackles that were the problem last game. I don't what the heck was going on, especially with Coleman and Robertson but I can assure they will get it fixed or Jack Jones and Venzell Boulware will take over.

Yes, I think so, especially when Hall returns.

Until then, I think Jones and Debord should join Mahoney in practically living with those guys.
Try the bad cop, good cop routine.
Try the "every position is now open" in practice routine.
Try the "this entire team is depending on you for our success" routine.
Try them all.
But, find five guys that can open just a few tiny running holes and give Dobbs just a few seconds to throw.
Do this, and all of our goals are still attainable.

No need to do major surgery on a bruise. Or fix a loose window with a sledge hammer.

We have a good line, they just responded poorly to adversity. And Maggitt wasn't there to settle them all down like he was last year. Hopefully, they will stop reading their own press clippings, and listening to their fat little girlfriends.

It'll be OK.

Rewatching the game and it is plain as day that Coleman Thomas was a huge liability. There were key moments in the passing game where he allowed guys to simply juke him out and go right up the middle to pressure Dobbs. I am only in the 2nd quarter, but at this point in the game I can't blame Dobbs on much. It was really the Oline, and particularly Thomas which hurt the passing game.

We need to add the bootlegs, play action pass and do something about Center and we should be fine.

5 blocking 7 most of the night on 1st down determined to stop Hurd. They did it well enough to squash drives get Dobbs in 3rd and long. The online is not good enough to dominate in this scenario.

I not sure but I think we just threw 2 times on 1st down and Dobbs did not run his normal reads. Not sure if coaches have been preparing for VT and thought line up give to Hurd Win and on to next week. We 3and outed them 1st time they had ball and I feel if not for the Sutton fumble which gave great field position . 1or 2 of their players would have started to give up and become weak links ergo rout . We gave them hope and it built on itself and they stalled used whole clock on offense to shorten game and give their 1's rest and cramped on D for same reason. It was a great game plan to keep it close with no TO's and see what happens.

Offensive line will probably still be a question mark until Chance Hall returns in the middle of the season

Serious question - did it take watching a replay for you to recognize that the interior of the OL was blowing our offense? It was so terrible that it jumped off the screen to me on the first watch and I'm no D4H.

Is that not the definition of insanity? Mahoney has not been able to coach up any of the talent he has been given, and in some ways the oline has even regressed if you look at year to year comparisons.

Why is that? The two OT's played reasonably well. Coleman, Jackson, and Wiesman stank it up. Wiesman in particular looked so clumsy that I was embarrassed for him.

It would be bad enough if Thomas just got outquicked by a 280 lb DT.... but the guy ran right through him several times.

It isn't Mahoney but I've said there was a problem in what they were doing with the OL since the first year. I was assured there just wasn't as much talent in that group as everyone thought.

How long can the Vols Oline stay in the shadows is perhaps a better question, no?

Remaining in the shadows would have been preferred to becomming a liability for the Vols

I would love to hear a former Olineman's input on the play of our Oline, if they can get better or not. If a Jr. or Sr can get much better idk, I've never played the position. If it's bad technique, lack of motivation, not talented enough, or conditioning? I personally think they weren't up for the game, there's know way we regressed that bad in the offseason, or conservative practices.

I say insert jack jones somewhere to talented and while not ton experience he has a nasty disposition others dont. That physical attribute was awful put people in who want be physical and play with leverage no matter what year they are in the program.

I agree put in the best players each week, get tired of hearing "redshirt" , we need the wins now more than next yr or the year after. If a player is really good he's leaving his original jr yr anyway

Does this suggest that the Vols Oline and Dline may not be what they are cracked up to be?:eek:hmy:
